Reviews for Acorn TV: Brilliant Hit Series

Patricia Brainard

Great content. App needs work. 1. Doesn't return to "resume" episode in series. Have to find series (season), then find the episode. 2. Streaming gets choppy after about 15 minutes - must completely close, wait a few minutes, restart. Much prefer to watch on my laptop in the browser. Cannot watch in the browser (Firefox) on my tablet because "the media used features your browser does not support".

This app crashes all the time and the customer service SUCKS. I have tried to reset my password multiple times and never get a reset email. I have checked my spam folder and it is not going there either. Their technology is equally inept on my Firestick. I have subscribed, yet when I actually want to watch something, it tells me I have to subscribe. Seriously, Acorn, fire whoever is in charge. No other app has these problems.

So far, I'm glad I just got the free trial. The streaming has been hiccupy, making it difficult to watch. In addition, in the app, as far as I can tell, the app seems to be missing the following features: 1) auto play the next episode 2) have to turn on the closed captioning at the beginning of every episode 3) can't tell which episodes I've already watched.

I like the content available but the app lacks features I would expect. For example, I can't resume where I left off. If I have to stop watching partway through an episode or movie I have to manually figure out where to resume from when I start up again. It also doesn't track what you've watched or where you are in a series. It's frustrating to have to review episode descriptions and try to sort out where you are in a series. Every other streaming app I use has these features.

The screen size is absurdly small. I can't imagine why anyone would want to watch anything using basically half the screen. I can't understand why anyone designing an app... especially a pay to view service.... would choose a platform so bad. I'm willing to give this a few weeks to see if they figure out what a collosal mistake this playback is. The lineup is absolutely fantastic. But, it's not like there's not plenty out there to choose from. BritBox has a great lineup, too and full size screens. I'm in the Trial week. If this isn't fixed before the 5th of December? There's just no way I'm paying for this.

It has some pretty decent shows on this app . I only watched the TV portion and not the movie but, the variety is quite nice. I'm just a cheapskate and have a hard time paying for so many apps in order to watch a few shows. I've had to weed through them and decide which one has the best selection of the shows I currently watch. If I ever drop Hulu or Netflix, this would be the one I would consider paying for. I just can't afford anymore right now. I wish I could!

I enjoy the service itself, but major issues with the app. Nothing populates in my recently watched section, which is frustrating trying to return to a show or even know what episode I left off on. I cast to my Chromecast which disconnects pretty quickly if you pause a show. Not a big deal, but the app doesn't track where you stopped watching so it starts the episode at the beginning every time instead of resuming. Would love an option to have CC on by default. Autoplay would also be nice.

When I first started using the app, I loved the service. I got to watch some fantastic shows that I would normally not have access to in the US. However, after their recent "upgrade" I am more than a little angry and frustrated. None of the titles will stream. I have done everything that the support site recommends and then some. Not to mention that I had to issue three support complaints over almost a week before getting the "personal response" that was nothing more than a canned email.

The app doesn't work well with Android devices - phone or TV. The app either won't load after opening and if it does then the videos don't play and if I can get them to play then inevitability playback stops after a few minutes with a "sorry unable to load" or playback error message. I've uninstalled/reinstalled, signed out then back in, etc and it will fix the issue temporarily, but I shouldn't have to do all that every time I want to watch the content I'm paying for.

The Acorn programming is great but the app is very poor. Here are a couple of the problems I have with the app: When casting to my TV I have to start the program on the app then cast it, otherwise the cast attempt fails. The "recently watched" section of the app lists the same two shows for months even though I have watched several dozen shows by now. The app doesn't keep track of the episodes that you've watched in a series, so you have to figure out which episode is next every time you watch.
