If you were ever eating out at a restaurant and thought to yourself, "I bet I could do this better if someone would just show me how," then this is the app for you. They don't just teach you how to fish, they teach you how to fillet, saute and serve over a beautiful bed of noodles. And hat tip to the product manager - Fantastic job improving the app over the past 2 years!
Reviews for America's Test Kitchen
← Back to America's Test KitchenI do love the app and I've had a subscription for almost two years! With that being said, barely any improvements have been made to said app. The culprit is the "Favorites" category, it's unappealing and frustrating to use. I have 3 main complaints: can't sort through all your recipes with a filter, home tab of Favorites doesn't show all your collections at once, and your favorite recipes need a way to label them "made" and "want to make" that would be seen from the home tab screen in favorites.
Horrible. Tried to subscribe, and the screen kept loading, then it said the purchase has failed. Then a week later I see the app charged me for the subscription. Fine....I try to log in, but the app has no way to bypass the subscription ad. Tried it on the desktop version of the site and also had problems. I want my money back, as I still haven't gotten to see a single recipe.
I like the redesign, it's made it so much easier to browse recipes and looks better! My one complaint is the shopping list has gotten a bit wonky! The old design was pretty good at categorizing things into produce, dairy, etc which was handy, but now everything goes into other. As well, there's occasionally a weird bug where I can't check off certain items without clearing the whole list. Still enjoy using the app but if the shopping list could get back to its old glory it'd be 5 stars!
Emailing them is the way to go if you're stuck on the "choose your membership" page. It got fixed promptly, but it wasn't clear what the issue was. I ended up losing my all saved recipes and collections (the app seems to have difficulties with adding recipes to collections too) and the Google Play store still states that I have to confirm my plan.
The update is horrible, it is so frustrating trying to find recipes I've saved or look at two different recipes to compare and contrast details without completely getting kicked back to the main page. The only plus is being able to see reviews now (which should have always been viewable). Some of my saved recipes were deleted. I am looking into ending my membership over these issues, it's not worth my time anymore with so many ongoing problems.
When printing from within the app, I don't have the option of not including the photo, "why this works," etc. If there is an option, I sure can't figure it out. What's more, now it seems I can ONLY print through the app, even when logged out of the app and going in through the website. Once I hit "print" it automatically takes me to the app, where I'm forced to print all the extra stuff and waste a ton of expensive ink. This alone is irritating enough to make me uninstall the app.
What is up with this app? I have never even been able to log in. I want to subscribe annually but I'm in an infinite loop of being asked to subscribe but never being able to log in, and google play thinking I've already subscribed, and the app thinking I haven't. Never had this level of difficulty before with an app that I WANT TO PAY FOR. Very disappointing.
I don't like the grocery list changes. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but when I put in a custom item (apples, beef, etc) that's not part of a recipe, it used to put them in relevant categories which was awesome for efficient shopping. Now it just puts everything under "Other". It also used to suggest brands that won their "taste tests". Hope this changes.
Good but would love to be able to browse through recipes. This app requires you to start the search with the name of the recipe or at least a main ingredient would never discover new recipes that way). Also, would like to see a 'notes' option with saved recipes so that I remember any modifications I made, how I liked it, how it turned out, etc.
I really like the intention of this app & I think it's off to a good start. Some suggestions: allow items in the grocery list to be edited, allow atk suggestions to be displayed along w/the quantity of the item (if I need 6 oz of cheese, I can't see both the "6 oz" & atk recommended brand), make sure if a grocery item says "frozen" it's added to the frozen food category, & there are several recipes & food tastings that don't seem to be in this app, but they can be found through the website.
Couldn't tell you anything about the app. Can't even create an account. Email, name, password once, check. And I'm assuming you should be able to scroll down to re-enter password and click Create Account, but no scrolling allowed. Nothing else. I've watched many episodes of this show and got happy when I saw there's an app. Now I'm just disappointed.
Their website is far from free.... but their show is on TV.... not to mention pintrest and most of the internet. I don't mind paying for an app... but a book only costs once and doesn't require a subscription! Not worth the cost... feel free to try the "free trial" but make sure you try it enough before you get charged... especially if you have dietary allergies.
Great resource! Decent app - it's an attractive UI and it works. My main issue is that I can't do multi-word searches reliably, e.g. "green beans". I would love a multi ingredient search for when I want to throw a couple of specific things together. I would also love if there were pairing suggestions for every entree. Sometimes I do not have the mental energy to think of sides to round out a meal!
The app is great. I love being able to save my favorite recipes for later. The videos added are really helpful because sometimes you just need to see how it was done! I would offer 2 suggestions. 1. add a feature to double or triple the ingredients for us. I can do math 1st thing in the morning, but after 5pm forget it! 2. add a section in the app where we can make notes on our favorite recipes, so we can remember any good changes we make.
I used to love using this app until Monday it started crashing. I couldn't use the app long enough (watching the videos, getting ingredients, instructions) without having it crash on me and then going back in again for the recipe. it would lag before it crashed. an online thread of people online had the same experience with no resolution. They (& I) uninstalled the app and just use the browser. I hate it, but at least it doesn't crash anymore. Sucks.
It used to be wonderful. But recently, the app has become rather difficult to use; pages keep freezing up, it's rather slow to use, and I can't keep a recipe open for 3 minutes without the app crashing on me. I've had to screenshot the entire page, just so I don't have to keep reopening the recipe (from scratch, mind), just to recheck I don't know in which update it was, but ATK needs to rollback to a prior update. Because as it stands now, the app is bordering on unusable.
Apparently there has been a new update to the app and I have had nothing but issues with it since. I look up a recipe and when I try to access it, there is an error. This is occurring even with my saved "Favorites" recipes. For the amount of money we spend on this app, I expect better. Hopefully they get things figured out soon.
Great recipes, but frustrating to use. Maybe they're an iPhone team that tolerates Android because they don't seem to understand how the back button is supposed to work. When I search for recipes, then click the first result, use the back button/swipe, it takes me back 2 screens, past the search results. But if I use the back arrow in the upper left hand corner of their UI, like an iPhone user would, it takes me back to the search results. The UX should fit the usage paradigm of the device.
So many bugs with this app, including: intense lag, missing recipes from collections, filters not working, and the occasional attempt to get me to pay again despite having a subscription. I've only had it 2 weeks and it drives me nuts. but the recipes are amazing!! Edit: Of course as soon as I leave a bad review it starts working perfectly!
