Reviews for Anova Culinary

App is a joke, worthless in my opinion. The main issue is that this is not a device that comes with full functionality unless you purchase the app for it, which is $9.99 per year. It's not a lot of money, but if you want to use it manually, you really can only set the temp. To set the time consumes a ridiculous amount of time without the phone app. Honestly, I hate being too connected where every nuance of your life is tracked, not to mention how woke the whole premise is. I'm out.

The app is now garbage. It used to be great. If there recipe had different temperatures for different textures, I could select which one I wanted. Not anymore. For example, in J Kenji Lopez-Alt's chicken breast recipe, he has multiple temperatures and time options. You can't select those anymore. I'm also guessing Anova is going to respond to this review with the same canned response. I'm not going to email you. Just fix the app! You know what's wrong.

Anova App uses your battery even when not in use and you have closed the App. Why???? burn up my phone and power for something I am not useing. Also the App has way to many confirmation. You don't need them since you can change your settings at anytime...So a waste of time. Also don't like the wifi and bluetooth version of the sous vide. It should have manual settings as well.

If you want to use your device to interface with the cooker AVOID THIS PRODUCT. The cooker, by itself, works very well. However, the app does not stay connected to cooker. Even if you manage to get connected for a few moments the app does not correctly control the cooker (use app to set a time or temp but cooker will have different settings) and the cooker does not communicate back to the app with such basic data as when temperature is reached or when cook time is completed. I'm returning it.

Anova moving to subscription just to be able to use app. This includes being able to connect by Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. So $2 per month subscription to connect by Bluetooth to check temperature. I think they're going to find out that no one values their app for $2 per month. They are also going to find that people remember when companies pull garbage like this.

Would give zero stars if I could. Can't access anything without subscription. "In app purchases" doesn't indicate 'zero content unless you pay.' It generally means you get Some content, with the Option to upgrade. I thought there'd at least be some free recipes and content to help me get started. I'm not going to add credit card info for a "free" trial. My family gave me the sous vide as a gift. It didn't even come with a small cookbook, like most appliances do now.

Update: Recent updates wiped out recipe history, and now it won't track recipe history either. Good recipes, easy to use and simple to connect to my Cookers. Well, One of them at a time anyway. Only drawback I've found so far is that you can't have two cookers linked to the app at the same time, even if you're only controlling one of them. Being able to control more than one at a time would be nice too.

For many years, this app offered decent recipes and Bluetooth control of my (offline!) Anova sous vide cooker. Now they've retroactively changed the deal, removing access to recipes without a paid account (and Bluetooth control without an account). The app used to be a good reference, even though the recipes never changed - they didn't need to - but it is now worthless to me.

I do not recommend that anyone purchase any Anova product from this point forward. This is the quintessential illustration of bait and switch; you are soliciting payment for a subscription service for a product that I have already obtained, notwithstanding the fact that one of your principal selling points was the functionality provided by the application. This is entirely unacceptable; and yes, I am grandfathered in, but the paywalled features are coming. So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Very slow to connect with WiFi - much slower than any other smart device I have used. Only two items to enter, time and temperature, and entry is inconsistent. For one, you backspace to delete the old value and enter new value. For the other, you just enter the new value and it replaced the old. When set at a low temperature (for tuna steak), the timer never started (although the water did come up to temperature and the cooking was fine).

The app used to be completely free and was part of why I purchased my Anova precision cooker. It included recipes and basic instructions to cook certain items. Now, you have to pay a monthly subscription to access the app. It's sad that I purchased an item out of good faith and this company pulled the rug out from under us after years of use.

After less than 24 hours my "great deal" 50% off purchase of the mini/lite I have found this app to be a nightmare. First, I get sucked into a paywall to use features that are included with other cooking tech. Then, the cooker would not connect to WiFi. Now less than 12 hours later I cannot log in on my new phone with my account incorrect. I tried creating a new account with my Gmail and the app won't get past the login screen. Three strikes you're out. this is getting returned. The mighty fell

Been happily using this for a while with no issues, but now it won't connect. Hmm, updating the app may fix it. Big mistake. Not only does the app require a subscription now, but soon I won't be able to use my cooker at all because it uses Bluetooth? This is bs. I only use the app as a remote control and monitor, don't care about whatever online stuff it may offer. Whenever this cooker stops working I will replace it with anything but an Anova product. This is ridiculous.

Almost useless app. You can check the water temperature and the timer. That's it. The timer itself is almost useless, but that's the unit's fault, not the app. The ONE thing you'd want to know is if the temperature is dropping. You don't want to sit there and check the temp on the app every few minutes. THAT defeats the whole purpose of having remote access. How about sending an alert to the app if the temp falls by more than X degrees? Then you could go check on it.

After using this app to control my device over two years, I'm uninstalling. It once functioned OK, but has gradually become unusable, first with connection issues, now it just crashes when I try to start a cook. The inconvenience of troubleshooting every time I use it outweighs the convenience of connected use. The decision to start charging new users ongoing subscription fees for basic advertised features is also trash; you shouldn't need to pay a monthly fee to use an appliance you own.

No longer works after the latest update - can't connect, even after repairing and reconnecting my Anova pro to my wifi. So guessing it's because I don't have a subscription. Used this happily for years, but guess I'm not one of the founding members to avoid a subscription. I get why a subscription model supports the variety of features to find and post cooking recipes. BUT now all I want is for the app to notify me when cooking is done. Wish they had a no cost tier with just notifications

old review below. this app or the device it's self can't hold a connection. I have to disconnect and reconnect frequently to get any update on progress. I'd quit bothering with the app so together if the circulator temp wheel worked properly, but now just touching it causes the temp value to jump all over the place. ((latest version as of Oct '17 is the best so far. I'd love to see more options for storing your own programs. At least in my case all network issues have been resolved))

Don't buy it, or return it if you can. Used to be a limited but decent app with basic recipes. Seemingly recently changed and with greatly reduced functionality and an ask for more money after owning the product for years. I wasn't asking for anything new, though that would have really impresses me. Instead you remotely hobbled a device that I used to enjoy using.

Works pretty well. More setting options would be nice, by it works quite fine. Really, no complaints. Update as of 10/14/2024: Greed takes over and I'm now required to subscribe to use features that were originally included with my purchase of the ANOVA sous vide machine. For however lovely the app was before, it is now paywall trash. Don't recommend you bother when Allrecipes and a ton of other recipe platforms will still give you resources without the fee.

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR APP!! Anova chose to put all recipes, cooking recommendations, and remote app controls for the cooker behind a subscription paywall. I specifically bought this cooker for those things that were advertised as INCLUDED. There's been a premium subscription for recipes beyond basics which's great for those who want it. I don't. It's not ethical to bait and switch the rest of us by removing what's been promised. We already paid at purchase. Please fulfill your obligation.
