App is a joke, worthless in my opinion. The main issue is that this is not a device that comes with full functionality unless you purchase the app for it, which is $9.99 per year. It's not a lot of money, but if you want to use it manually, you really can only set the temp. To set the time consumes a ridiculous amount of time without the phone app. Honestly, I hate being too connected where every nuance of your life is tracked, not to mention how woke the whole premise is. I'm out.
Reviews for Anova Culinary
The app is now garbage. It used to be great. If there recipe had different temperatures for different textures, I could select which one I wanted. Not anymore. For example, in J Kenji Lopez-Alt's chicken breast recipe, he has multiple temperatures and time options. You can't select those anymore. I'm also guessing Anova is going to respond to this review with the same canned response. I'm not going to email you. Just fix the app! You know what's wrong.
Anova App uses your battery even when not in use and you have closed the App. Why???? burn up my phone and power for something I am not useing. Also the App has way to many confirmation. You don't need them since you can change your settings at anytime...So a waste of time. Also don't like the wifi and bluetooth version of the sous vide. It should have manual settings as well.
If you want to use your device to interface with the cooker AVOID THIS PRODUCT. The cooker, by itself, works very well. However, the app does not stay connected to cooker. Even if you manage to get connected for a few moments the app does not correctly control the cooker (use app to set a time or temp but cooker will have different settings) and the cooker does not communicate back to the app with such basic data as when temperature is reached or when cook time is completed. I'm returning it.
Anova moving to subscription just to be able to use app. This includes being able to connect by Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. So $2 per month subscription to connect by Bluetooth to check temperature. I think they're going to find out that no one values their app for $2 per month. They are also going to find that people remember when companies pull garbage like this.
Would give zero stars if I could. Can't access anything without subscription. "In app purchases" doesn't indicate 'zero content unless you pay.' It generally means you get Some content, with the Option to upgrade. I thought there'd at least be some free recipes and content to help me get started. I'm not going to add credit card info for a "free" trial. My family gave me the sous vide as a gift. It didn't even come with a small cookbook, like most appliances do now.
Update: Recent updates wiped out recipe history, and now it won't track recipe history either. Good recipes, easy to use and simple to connect to my Cookers. Well, One of them at a time anyway. Only drawback I've found so far is that you can't have two cookers linked to the app at the same time, even if you're only controlling one of them. Being able to control more than one at a time would be nice too.
For many years, this app offered decent recipes and Bluetooth control of my (offline!) Anova sous vide cooker. Now they've retroactively changed the deal, removing access to recipes without a paid account (and Bluetooth control without an account). The app used to be a good reference, even though the recipes never changed - they didn't need to - but it is now worthless to me.
I do not recommend that anyone purchase any Anova product from this point forward. This is the quintessential illustration of bait and switch; you are soliciting payment for a subscription service for a product that I have already obtained, notwithstanding the fact that one of your principal selling points was the functionality provided by the application. This is entirely unacceptable; and yes, I am grandfathered in, but the paywalled features are coming. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Very slow to connect with WiFi - much slower than any other smart device I have used. Only two items to enter, time and temperature, and entry is inconsistent. For one, you backspace to delete the old value and enter new value. For the other, you just enter the new value and it replaced the old. When set at a low temperature (for tuna steak), the timer never started (although the water did come up to temperature and the cooking was fine).
