It's ok. Used some free maps from USGS. Didn't have time to learn much about the app before using. Mostly used to double check where we were in relation to the river we were hiking up. Annoying that I had two maps to bounce back and forth between when I was close to my destination though...but worked fast and efficiently picking up my location(they were free...you get what you pay for). I haven't used any other mapping apps so it's a solid 4+ stars.
Reviews for Avenza Maps: Offline Mapping
← Back to Avenza Maps: Offline MappingMy first impressions are generally very good. It's awesome being able to buy and use Trails Illustrated maps on the app just as one example. However, I do have a couple early gripes. One, considering that some of the Avenza Store maps, like the TI, are fairly expensive to begin with, you should be able to keep more than three of your own imported maps active without a subscription fee. Maybe 5-10 would be more reasonable? A more annoying issue is when you tap on the compass icon while on a map so
Awesome tool for snowmobiling. We downloaded the West Yellowstone maps (north and south) and they worked great. Even in Backcountry because you could easily find your way back to the trails. You can set waypoints and save locations which is also nice. Gave it 4 stars because it's kind of hard to track down specific maps. They could tweak the search functions a bit to improve that.
We use this app to navigate while ATVing in the Black hills. It has never failed us. We bought a couple of cheap $35 burner phones with no service so if they get ruined it's no big deal. The features are amazing. We can drop pins at our favorite spots we find on the trails so we can find them again. We can add pictures and comments to the pins. It's so accurate that I have pinned a particular tree I found and was able to go right back to it. We also love the track recording feature. We can see exactly where we've been so we aren't hitting the same trails again. Oh, gosh, and the distance tool... let's just say I love this app!
Avenza is simple to use, free to use with a limit of 3 active free maps, and works so well in areas with ZERO cell phone reception. What a huge help on my last backpacking trip! If you buy the maps, which are .99 ea for the normal size map, you can keep an unlimited amount of those active because you paid for them. I like the app and find it easy to use and very beneficial in keeping me on track on the trails. For me, the best feature is showing the direction the phone is pointed.
Great selection of maps. Many are free or low cost. Once you have a lot of maps downloaded you can group them in folders. The worst aspect of this app is finding the right map. There can be 20+ maps for an area with only one meeting your requirements. The map selection tool isn't very effective, and the map previews aren't very informative. It's often best to get a recommendation from someone else who already has a map that is working well for them for a specific area.
Plots my location and allows variables otherwise not available without GPS accuracy and real-time navigation. I'm just getting used to mapping abilities and trail locations. Very useful tool. I am pleased and would recommend to the beginner / novice hiker. Does not offer elevation or degree of difficulty. That would rate a 5 star 🌟. Maybe it does, and I just have not found it yet. 🤔
So far, so good. Haven't had a chance to use it much yet. The online maps that they provide are better and larger and seem to provide more detail. 5-17-19 ... It's turning out to be excellent, loving it! 4 stars have become 5 stars ! 3-9-22 ... Still doing great. Gathering maps from distant areas to make our vacations more interesting . 😉 With a new phone I do have to re-find and download all the maps I had before . 😟
I like that some maps are free. Others are quite inexpensive. The USGS Topos are actual maps, some very up-to-date. App locates your position on the topo. Better than a paper topo map. I used to buy the paper USGS Topo maps for, like, $20 each. These are on the smaller screen format, but zoomable. So much more useful in the field, plus, the map will locate you. No more triangulation approximations.
Amazing tool for adventuring! I was about to buy a GPS device for hundreds of dollars, then discovered Avenza. Now I have the perfect tool to digitally access my favorite maps (it's worth paying for the quality maps!) and be able to see exactly where I am, even when I'm far off the grid and out of cell service. I can track my routes, track my progress, drop pins at my favorite campsites and so much more. If you love maps and love adventuring, this app is a fantastic.
This isn't so much a mapping app per se (like Gaia or Maps.me) as it is a map store to buy maps published by others. There is a gazillion maps available for download costing up to $30 per map (and at least in one case over $100) BUT with many published years/decades ago. If you're looking for some highly specialized maps, it may work for you. But be prepared to do a lot of searching as l search functionality is very limited. Also, the app immediately tries to force you to create an account.
I don't think I've ever used a clunkier process for downloading offline content. I am downloading dozens of maps for a thru-hike, and the interface could not be worse for this. You can buy maps on desktop and then go through a series of menus on the app for each bundle, or you can use the app's abysmal search function to find each bundle you need. Either way, you have to go through this process for each bundle you want to dl since it takes you away from the store/search each time a dl finishes.
I found this app in Smokey Mountain National Park where, in lieu of printed maps, it was offered as a free download along with a free map bundle for back country hiking offline. It worked perfectly, and very intuitively for this 60 year old photographer. I discovered that I could also link my images to my recorded route to see exactly where things were. After leaving the park, I found many other uses for the app due to the extensive collection of maps and charts available, many of them for free.
Used this hunting this year. I was absolutely amazed at the accuracy and loved the fact that I could use it even with no cell reception. It seriously made navigating a breeze. Especially seeing roads that dead ended and saved us from having to turn around. One buddy had a GPS and was constantly fiddling with it. Another ditched his gps for this App altogether. I cant say enough good things about it, and I highly recommend.
I have been using this app for years now. I got digital maps from Colorado parks and wildlife and I put them in dropbox, then download what I need each hunting season. It puts me right on the map where I am so I know that I'm not on private land and I can't get lost. No cell service is necessary which is good in the mountains. Wonderful clear map and I can blow it up big with a squeeze of a finger. I can mark a dot on the map for anything I want to return to and I can follow my tracks. Perfect.
I love Avenza maps. You need service to download the maps. But after you have eye maps downloaded, it works really well even without cell service. I've walked many different Tennessee State Park trails including areas where there is not the closest bit of cell service and it works great! There is a downside that the GPS tracking doesn't always work as well if you are in a building or thick tree canopy. But as long as you have a good view of the sky, then it functions really really well.
NEW It turns out that I had run into a bug, and they were very responsive about it, and actually were able to put out an APK that fixed the problem. I assume they'll fix it pretty soon in the play store version too. So, kudos to them. OLD It was great before, but I was on a much older version (which worked fine). Now, I downloaded the latest version, and I can't use the maps when offline. As soon as I open the app, I get a message, "You're offline, check your connection".
The Sterling Forest (Map 100) started acting up, does not hold GPS location. I am in a certain location and the blue dot is stuck in a completely different location with a big blue halo circle around the blue dot. This started happening a few weeks ago, this map worked great for years, don't know how they screwed it up with the last software update, but that seems to be the case. I have un-installed it and reinstalled it, same issue. G. maps works fine, which means my GPS works fine on my phone.
The available offline maps make navigating some far out parks easy and pleasant. No guessing where you are or which trail is the one you need to follow. One of the parks we were hiking had multiple trails that split to see several sites. The physical maps in the area were worn beyond the point of use. Using the offline maps that we downloaded we were able to navigate from site to site easily without backtracking. When the day was over we were able to see the quickest way back to our camp.
My go-to mapping app for new places. Hiking, kayaking, driving and canoeing. I can almost always find the appropriate map. Do buy bundles and digitized editions of guides and maps instead of always trying to stitch-up free maps: the cost more than pays you back by savings in time and anguish. You also support the developers and sellers. You can't expect everything to be free, much less a great map and app.
