Description
Been using BackCountry Navigator GPS PRO for a couple months now. It’s basically an app that lets you download offline topo maps and use your phone as a GPS navigator for hiking and outdoor activities. Pretty solid app if you’re into that kind of thing.
Here’s what you can do: you can download maps for the US and other countries ahead of time, so you don’t need cell coverage when you’re out in the middle of nowhere. There’s also support for Android Wear, so you can see your navigation on your smartwatch. And you can import GPS waypoints from files or just enter coordinates manually – that GOTO feature is useful for navigation.
Look, if you’re an outdoorsy person who likes to explore off the grid, you’ll probably like this app. It’s not perfect – the map downloads can be a bit clunky sometimes – but overall it does the job. Worth checking out if you want an offline topo mapping solution.
Editor Opinion
So here's my take on BackCountry Navigator GPS PRO. I've tested a bunch of outdoor navigation apps and this one's pretty solid. The offline maps are a huge plus, and I like the flexibility to import your own waypoints. The Android Wear support is a nice touch too. On the downside, the map downloads can be a little finicky, and it's not the most intuitive app to use at first. But once you get the hang of it, it's a pretty reliable offline GPS tool.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Tons of offline topo maps to download for navigation
- Supports importing GPS waypoints and coordinates
- Android Wear integration for wrist-based navigation
- Free to download with optional in-app purchases
Cons
- Map downloads can be a bit clunky at times
- Takes some getting used to, not the most intuitive
- Can get repetitive if you're just doing the same routes
