The Navigation App. I have used it for many years off the road, never failed me. (Do not use magnetic phone covers, though).
Reviews for BackCountry Navigator GPS PRO
← Back to BackCountry Navigator GPS PROI have used this app since 2017. It has always been a bit clunky, but, hey, I used it for some pretty robost offroad trips for thepast 7-8 years, exclusively. Unfortionately, it has recently become unreliable and there is NO WAY to contact customer support. About 7 days ago it no longer would download/display the additional offroad maps I have purchased for use over the past several years. Google shows my subscritptions are current. The app shows they do not exist.
This used to be a great app. Now it won't even open unless I grant notification permission. I even paid for this app when I first started using it. No such thing as accountability with phone apps. Creators are totally hidden and anonymous.
I do a lot of thru overnight hikes and day hikes. One of the best features is were you can pause you're tracking and resume were you left off. Some say it's a little hard to navigate thru the app but the reason why is because it gives you so many options and that's what you really need when Navigating the outdoors. This app works Great and I prefer it over others. I hope it stays in service. I'm willing to even pay yearly subscription for this app.
This used to be a decent app that I would have given four stars. The only real issue was that the interface is a bit clunky and takes a bit of getting used to. However, now it is very unreliable. About half the time, it does not detect the correct elevation gain and reports 0 feet of elevation gained instead. When this happens, it also gets the distance traveled wrong by a large margin (e.g. 2.7 miles reported vs 5 miles actual distance). Additionally, the compass is now unreliable.
Worked great until the last couple updates. GPS doesn't work as well anymore. Seems to lose signal more often. Track line is completely useless now. Regardless of how many switchbacks you hike or which direction you go, the trackline shows a straight line. Makes tracking and backtracking difficult. Have had the APP for 5 or so years and it was a 5 star app until lately.
For those who venture out of range or just like to track things this is a solid app. I purchased it for fishing but use it for hiking, on commercial airliners and just to check maps. Could be a bit complicated for Mac/iPhone users **sarcasm**but has served me well. I upgraded to the Acuterra map package and am pleased with that as well. Droid Turbo. now using Pixel3. still love it.
What happened to this app? I paid for pro and I've been using it for years. It used to be great. Got a new phone and went to use it while I was out on a walk and it took a few minutes of clicking through permissions and other nonsense before whatever that migration was that didn't work. Now it seems like the map sources aren't loading and a bunch are talking about subscriptions.. I'm going to find a new hike tracker.
I've used this app almost from its inception, & it just keeps getting better. Responsive dev & I find the UI intuitive, fast, & easy to use, way better than the competitors. And I've tried about all of them since I spend the majority of my time in remote areas, often without reliable cell service. Don't go out without it.
I've used this app at least several times a month for a number of years now in the States and in Spain, and it's hands-down my favorite tool for backcountry navigation both on and off-trail. It's appalling how antiquated traditional overpriced GPS software (Garmin, etc.) is in comparison. On rare occasion I run into small bugs and a few features could be optimized a tad, but the US topo map resolution and wide variety of open source and public domain map options are excellent.
i was directed to this app by the fun trex website. i was not expecting to have to pay extra to get each and every track pack. and it's not just a little extra, you could spend a couple hundred dollars on tracks in this app. IT'S CALLED BUNDLING, add some value. don't nickle and dime us. but the big reason I'm not very happy with this app is there is no Android auto support. i could still make use of it, but in dash support would be really awesome.
Spend a small amount of time getting to know this app and it will be ENORMOUSLY useful. It works great offline, no cell service needed; you have to choose areas to download onto your device before you go out and use it. You'll also need to turn on your gps antenna (wait until you get there to save power) and you can set the behavior of how often it determines your location to conserve even more battery power if desired. I find this FAR more useful than the comparatively low-tech handheld gps devices on the market because my smartphone can process all that data way faster than the old chips using tiny amounts of memory in those traditional handheld gps devices. I can get all kinds of different topo maps, overlay boundary data, private property, etc. Very valuable tool for hunting and hiking. I also recommend bringing an extra battery or a power pack for your phone since using the gps antenna constantly will drain your battery.
Disappointed, I have always loved this tracking, until yesterday. I use it when I ride horse to track my miles along with mapping my ride. Yesterday it didn't map my ride correctly and it did get the miles correct. I thought it was because I needed to update it, but that is not the case. I paid for this app, so I wouldn't have to worry about it not working for me, like it has always worked wonderful in the past.
Great app! As the information from Crittermap states, the app requires some practice before taking it on a major trip. I've used it to log several trips, hiking and biking. I feared the battery usage would be excessive, but for outings of a few hours my phone's battery did not run low. I enjoyed knowing the maximum up and down speeds, time moving and not moving, and other statistics; as well as making screen shots of the tracks. Get this app to know where you are out-of-doors.
This app is awesome! I use this on my phone and I have a handheld garmin GPS, using them side by side, obviously I much prefer the screen size, brightness and responsiveness of my phone. Be sure to download your map ahead of time. While youre on the trail turn off mobile data, bluetooth, etc. Leave location services enabled. I also use the battery saver mode and can get my phone to go a few days without a charge. I always carry a backup battery just incase.
This app worked extremely reliably for many years and has helped me on numerous outdoor adventures in the past. I prefered it above all other similar apps because it did not require me to create an account just to be able to use the app.
After recent updates it has become completely unusable for me because it keeps displaying a message saying "Internet Off, See Layers Menu". I have confirmed that the "Internet Enabled" option is turned on. Reinstalling, clearing data/cache did not help.
left a bad review some time ago when I changed devices while trying to move data to a new device. got it handled then. this time I was worried also. downloaded the pdf, followed the steps. Worked, took a few but I'm good to go. oh and their customer service reached out to make sure I was solid. perfect! this is my go to app when off grid.
it took me a little while to understand all the features of this app, but it is really powerful. I use it every time I hike. ou can record tracks, you can record pens, and you can associate photographs with it. you can export your tracks in either GPX or KML format, and you can also import any KML file, which gives you the ability to build a hike using caltopo or other web services and then import i into your phone with backcountry navigator. in addition, there are many maps, both topographical
It was a great app and it still works but after Android undated it's file access permissions you cannot backup your data and the file migration option does not work on new Android operating systems. Fix the issues and I would be happy to pay an upgrade fee to start using it again. If you cannot backup your data it's makes the app pretty much useless.
Backcountry Nav used to be my go to app for a lot of things. But it feels a bit outdated at this point. I wish they would have the option for multiple layers at a time. One of the biggest reasons I stopped using the app. MVUM data is from 2017, and honestly, the color coding scheme is a bit annoying. I need to carry a print out to understand what the colors mean. Also not very useful for the color blinded folks probably. It will live on my phone, untouched.
