The latest version of the Bible Gateway app has major issues. First of all, it takes too long to open and when it does I'm bombarded with an intrusive advertisement. Then when I click on the link "Read the Bible" there's an opening delay of about 15 seconds or more. And when it finally opens it doesn't remember my previous location. It always resets to Genesis 1. I can't even choose a different font. I can only change the font size. Nor can I open more than one book at the same time now. 😞
Reviews for Bible Gateway
← Back to Bible GatewayThis app used to be amazing, then they put in full-screen, popup ads with audio. That was annoying, but I continued to tolerate it. Then, in the middle of service, the popup add was for some werewolf spicy romance novel with audio! I will be looking for a new, more suitable app for my bible needs. I understand the need for ad revenue to keep the content free, but do better with filtering and think about the environments this app is likely to be used in. Ads with sounds are inappropriate.
I have had this app for year, have loved using it daily. The app used to have unobtrusive banner ads at the bottom, but within the past year they have gone to full screen pop up ads, some that you can't get rid of without closing and killing the app or ads that take you to the play store when you touch the X to close them. It makes me sad to do this, but I will be deleting the app after this review.
I have had this app for some years now with no problems. Loved it! Today I tried to open app. Very slow to open. Then a full screen ad which didn't want to close, when it closed another one came up. Problem to choose the book I wanted to read. Then it would not let me choose chapter or verse I wanted. Also problems to schroll up or down to change from book to book. To high lite or to save under Favorite Verses, I had to tab several times. Very frustrating. 😞 I hope these problems can be fixed.
So sad that it has gone downhill As everyone is saying. Ad pop-ups every time I start the app. I am willing to pay for it to get rid of the ads but not sure how to go about it. They don't seem to offer it. Going to my old app you version until they get rid of the ads or allow a choice to purchase. 2 years later and still the same issues I will just start using Bible gateway directly from my browser on my phone so I don't get no advertisements. not even a response from the makers of this software
This had been my main devotion go to app for years. Then, all the interrupting pop-up ads appear before you can get in or right in the middle of studying. THAT IS SO ANNOYING! It seems this company is now more into and concerned about marketing products, services, & the pop-up ads, then they are about promoting the word of God & His Gospel. For that reason, I'm out. The YouVersion app feels more like a study app. It does the assignment better.
I've used this app for years & pay for the plus version. I'm not sure why, but for the past 1-2 yrs. it's been horrible. Trying to find & utilize the resources with the plus version is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I can't log in/out or use the resources w/o the app freezing up. Uninstall & reinstalling don't help either. Opening via the internet seems ok, but I don't always have internet. Huge waste of money
I absolutely love the access to so many different versions of the Bible here. I've used this app for years, I love how it was before all the excessive pop-ups. I understand that you need to cover operational costs. I have deleted the App because of excessive pop-up's while I'm reading the Bible. I don't mind one add every 20 minutes (I suggest stating that one pop-up every 20 minutes will occur to help cover operational costs.) put a link for Donations instead.
I've used and loved this app for years but the recent update causes it to immediately jump to ads as soon as you open the app. That would be fine if you could skip them or even if they were short enough to get around, but any time I try to skip I am sent straight to google play. Hoping that another update gets put out soon to correct it, because it's really become my go to bible app.
This was my favorite Bible app for years. Unfortunately, it continues to be unreliable due to the continued interruptions during use. This has become more than just an inconvenience. I have responded to your "Feedback" request, but it has not helped. I would like to rely on Bible Gateway for my daily studies, but I find myself using alternative Bible apps that are consistently dependable for research, daily studies, reading, listening, and the commentaries.
I've used this app for a long time. Sadly, this app turned to ads some time back, and I'm just getting around to writing this. I get it, I guess. I'm just not sure how the app functioned prior to the ads. I've opened the app in church and accidentally had my volume up, and an ad started playing, a bit embarrassing. I gave an additional star because the noisy ads have been silenced.
Been using the app for years. It's always been my go to. I opened it recently and while searching for a verse found out they added pop up ads. I instantly uninstalled. I'm extremely disappointed. Reading the Bible and searching for verses should not be interrupted by intrusive pop up ads. If you want to provide a paid or subscription service for Bible studies or other resources that's fine, but distracting people from the Bible for ad cents is exactly why Jesus was flipping tables in Matt 21:12.
After uninstalling the app more than a year ago due to popovers and ads, I thought I'd come back and see if anything changed. Apparently not. I've used the online version since at least the turn of the century. There too has obnoxious popovers but once closed, they stay that way. The You Version app is simple and the way Bible Gateway used to be. Due to the many current reviews for the same reasons that frustrated me, I won't be reinstalling.
Ads and subscription plans. I would happily pay a 1 time fee to get ad free, however I will not pay $5/month, that rate is obsurd. However, the ads are intrusive enough that it's unbearable to use without ads. I understand that people have to get paid, but $5/month is a bit excessive just to get a Bible tool without ads. This is my favorite Bible website also, but for an app there are better options.
Once again updating as these are developers that listen and fix issues which is how it should be. Works great, easy to read and many choices for versions no huge complaints, just minor. First is ads, I get it and honestly they are quick so very minor complaint. Other, again, minor. You have to complete a passage or it won't save where you are at in the verse. Very minor complaints.
Have used this app for many years. But now there are relentless pop-up ads, with no filters as to their content (like women in underwear). The developers solution offered to me was to pay the monthly subscription to avoid ads. My solution was to find an alternative app. Harper Collins tries to play this off as necessary to support the distribution of the app. This is total nonsense for a publisher of their size. Just another easy revenue stream for them now.
This app is great and I enjoy the additional resources with the paid sub. However, the latest version unexpectedly crashes when searching for a specific book or passage. It would be helpful to highlight in different colors and add certain passages to different folders. This is incredibly helpful when doing systematic studies for leading groups/sermons. Bible Gateway could be so much better with some minor tweaks. On the Dashboard, it could have all your nameable Folders and access to my Notes.
I've used Bible gateway since before it was an app and am so disappointed with the ads totally taking over the screen and not letting you proceed for close to a minute. I used to x out and start over, but even that doesn't work anymore. I've pretty much swapped over to another app that doesn't have all the commentary resources I like because the ads are about the worst I've ever seen as far as no way to close out or get past them. Very disappointing - and they're not even Christian-related ads.
I've used this app for years for my Daily Bible reading plans. For the past year, they've started to have pop-up ads that are oftentimes very inappropriate for a Bible app. Some show scantly clad women, some occultic media, which I've contacted the publishers who've done nothing. Lately, it's gotten so that I can't use the app without being forced to go to the advertiser's websites or Google Play. For now, I'll try their website til I finish this year's read and go elsewhere in the new year.
frustrating. constantly getting an ad when I open it and I can't shut the ad. I have to close the app and open it again. also, it was emailing my reading program to me and suddenly this week, it stopped. I've tried to reset it to no avail. I've written them about the issue. still nothing. I'm done.
