Honestly this app could so easily be a 5 star but there's just a few things that have dissapointed me. When I've paid for recipe scans and the photos are added sideways!? The fact that I can't seem to edit the recipes after they have been scanned in... Which is really necessary because they're often added with errors or with no title. C'mon guys... Just a bit more work and I would be sharing this app with everyone I meet!! It's almost there!!
Reviews for BigOven Recipes & Meal Planner
← Back to BigOven Recipes & Meal Plannerthe app is OK. BIG BUT HERE. when trying to edit the recipes, the edits don't show up unless you are at the edit screen. I put a lot of time into entering and transposing my recipe list and am reluctant to change apps, but probably will as any edit made is pointless. the only way to change a recipe so I can be accurate is to start a new recipe and erase the old one. it's a pain.
Update. I still love this app but it consistently fails me in certain situations. I pay for the pro version mainly for the notes and folders but I cannot access my notes from varying devices. I can only see the note from the device on which it was made even though I'm logged in to the same account. Additionally I'm tired of my notes disappearing even on the same device. Often I can get some of them to return if I click to edit an old one or even make a new note but this isn't ideal.
Unfortunately, I have to change my review. I am a paying "pro member." I have experienced a number of bugs and UX problems, many of which are app-breaking, and I am reaching my final straw. Phone App: constantly crashes from the most basic of functions, such as editing grocery list and adding meals to the planner or even just scrolling through the calendar planner. Web App: Horribly slow database connection, so that you wait 10 seconds or more between even the most basic of actions (which could easily be cached to my local computer), and archaic error messages EVERY TIME I try to "create grocery list from meal calendar". I am not kidding, it is every time. Today, I am just not allowed to use one of the most essential features of the app. There are plenty of other small bugs as well. The web app used to be better, but obviously they are not treating their software developers properly, because the app is a total mess lately. Its downright infurating, and I am a paying user. If this doesnt shape up, I am leaving this app in the dust, I dont care if I need to re-add all my saved recipes in another app. This is unacceptable.
I have been using this website and the apps on my phone and tablet for years to plan meals. I love how easy it is to add a recipe from another source--even my Grandmother's recipe cards--arrange them on a calendar, and print out the weekend's grocery list. It keeps us out of a rut, while letting me easily keep track of dishes that become family favorites.
Was not exactly what I was looking for, but still a decent app. Great for recipes in one spot. And a place to put meal planning. But was hoping it would have a place to store what ingredients I already had so I could see recipes I could make. Only allows you to manually enter 3 "left over" ingredients each time.
Tons of great recipes. Easy to use even for those not especially computer literate. I highly recommend this app. I'm on the keto diet now. It would help me to have some recipes labeled keto, and perhaps a note on some of the existing recipes indicating they are keto friendly. Also would like instructions on how to convert recipes to keto. Anyway, Big Oven is the first recipe app I look at when researching a recipe.
Used it for years...since Windows 7. Used to be so features were free. Now, the best features no longer work unless you pay a monthly premium fee. Poppycock. I will never pay a monthly fee. Better off just paying one time to own a software suite than a monthly fee. So, I still recommend the app but not the greedy management. Hence only 4 of what could be 5 stars.
This app used to be a great app. Unfortunately, it is now full of bugs - many of which have existed for some time. My impression is that this app is no longer being professionally managed and may not have adequate hosting capacity. I would not install at this time. Some issues - right before Thanksgiving, the app stopped syncing the grocery list. Also, when saving a recipe to a folder, not all available folders are displayed. This has been happening for several weeks.
Oversaturated with advertisement ads. The ad videos pop up in the middle of the screen while you're trying to read the recipes. I used Bigoven years ago, and it wasn't like this. Now it's the same as every other recipe site. Ads, ads, and more ads. The focus is on the ads, not the recipes. SMH, what a shame.
I've used BigOven for three years. I cannot believe how dysfunctional this app continues to be. The calendar will randomly jump around, so if you like to plan weekly meals-- it's incredibly hard to nail down the month you are on and will sometimes put you back a year ago. Even if you schedule meals for specific days they will revert back to one day. Additionally-- the app will sometimes crash. I'm done trying to make something work that doesn't.
Better than Cozi! I'm talking about the free version of both apps here. Why I like big oven better: 1. Big Oven moves crossed off grocery items to the bottom of the list. Cozi leaves them in their original position. 2. Big Oven categorizes grocery items for you.(dairy, produce, poultry, etc.) Cozi requires you to do this. 3.Big Oven adds recipe ingredients go on the main grocery list. Cozi adds recipe ingredients to a separate shopping list for each recipe. (Who shops multiple lists at once?)
I'm only using the free version for now, but it's really helpful to have recipes and shopping list in one. I haven't done more than save recipes, but there tons that look great. I've just been bookmarking everything I want to try because I know I'll be at the store and remember last minute that I want to try something new. Pretty user friendly, too.
It's alright but there is a lot of efficiency issues that make it more of a hassle than a help. The grocery list doesn't aggregate well since recipes might have one slight thing off for similar ingredients such as soft butter vs softened butter. The other issue is none of the collections ever update. I've had this app for a year. The weekly top fav has not changed since. Maybe everyone really does make the same 5 things every week. There's several other issues like this that just make going on a computer so much easier. It is nice for storing recipes you like though!
Does almost everything I want, but I would love to see filters for nutritional profiles, like low calorie, low carb, etc. Search terms sometimes go wonky: Looking for "canned tomatoes" will turn up every kind of tomato under the sun. These are nitpicks, but a major problem is that it will not sync between my laptop and my phone. I've spent the past few hours searching for a new recipe app just for this reason, but I can't seem to find one that does everything that this one does.
no way to add a recipe by URL, which is a requirement for any recipe saving app in my opinion. Update: we're able to hack this by sharing to the app from the web page. The app works well and I'd consider it as my regular recipe app. At $25/yr, I'd want to see external integrations that allow me to export and not be locked into BigOven if I want to cancel. I'll stick to Paprika 3 because I need to be able to save personal notes for less than $25/yr.
FYI, the recipe scan function is unusable, in my experience. I have had to submit tickets for the past 20 recipes for which I have used this service included in the Pro membership. I have gotten back totally random recipes instead of the recipes I've submitted. And no explanation for why it is happening. Don't waste your money on a Pro membership for this "feature."
it's a good service but the adds are too obnoxiously annoying. I understand that for the people like me who don't use the service often enough to justify the monthly fee, the adds help keep the service profitable. Just keep the adds on the screen. Lately when a recipe is printed part of the recipe is covered by an advertisement... if you can't read the entire recipe what is the point? makes for one useless product. 😒
Whenever I've needed a recipe on any kind - meat, soups, veggies- Big Oven always has recipes that are creative and taste good. Most of the time, the directions are complete and can be re-configured if needed for more or less people. I am able to save recipes I've tried or want to try and can organize them by food groups, like soups, dessert, etc.
Great idea, good app, still has a long ways to go. The recipes auto populated in the app are hit and miss. Sometimes they load beautifully into the app, populating ingredient lists properly, sometimes a simple comma or dash can trip it up. Some recipes don't listen the ingredients properly, so you need to review them first and make sure things match. The good thing is, if you subscribe you can copy any recipe and edit it to your liking or add your own. The grocery list has stopped functioning.
