If they add a audio book queue and improve some of the lower level functions such as the search engine having more targeted search options and its power consumption this would be a 5* easy. The audio book selection is really good though and it's updated regularly which is also a plus. A rating system for users would help people find the books they're more interested in faster.
Reviews for Black Library Audio
← Back to Black Library AudioNeeds the option to download over mobile data. Bought two books while I was at work and found out it wouldn't allow me to download at all because there was no wifi. a lot of people have enough data to not care about downloading a book. Regularly closes the book if paused for a while meaning you need to pull your phone out multiple times to pick your book manually again.
Good books, but the app is terrible. Any notification causes the book to pause and be removed from now playing. Other media being played, however, does not pause book playback. Please allow playback to continue through notifications. Or at least to resume playing after the notification. Occasionally, the playback is stopped without any accompanying notification or apparent cause.
I love the audio books but gosh, every time my phone gets a notification they pause. That means that if I would like to listen to them in bed without blasting light into my eyes to unpause it then I have to put my phone in aeroplane mode. you can't even remedy this by using a different player since the phone will not allow you to see the audio files in the black library folder, otherwise I would have just used my music player or Google music to play it. such a shame!
It's ok. Simple platform. However it has issues when scrolling in the store (flicking off what I'm trying to select and opening something different), when I receive notifications the audio stops and doesn't restart, and the player doesn't keep track of what's playing making me have to go into library to select my file to continue listening. Audible is a more reliable platform, would recommend Devs to take notes on functionality. Also a sleep timer would be nice.
Bizarre app for a few reasons. Not only do the books I've purchased directly through black library not appear in the app, but books are actually more expensive via the app compared to buying directly on Black Library or through Audible, etc. I'm not sure what the point of this app is in it's current state. If you want to lock the books to be only usable from your proprietary app, at least make them cheaper.
Not a bad little app, only complaints is even if you're not listening to anything the app inserts itself into your notifications with a resume button that doesn't work, and also the last few minutes of every book don't play - they're there, I can move the timeline to them but when I hit play it plays a split second and then skips back to chapter 1. Bit frustrating.
Have only tried out one book so far, but it works just fine. Like any other podcast/audiobook app except for 40k. EDIT: I cannot download unless on WiFi. Very frustrating. Aren't most people listening to audio books while traveling? Traveling most often equals using 4G or 5G. Severely cripples the usefulness of this app.
This app is horrendous. It's constantly closing the audio book, forcing me to pull my phone out and re-select it. Almost always it's starting up minutes off from where it should be. Anytime I get a message I have to start it up again it doesn't auto play. What a totally frustrating app. Use Audible. Its such a superior exper5.
I've downloaded the app intermittently but the problem I face is that the app drains my battery even after I've left the app. The only thing I can say it does well is facilitate the listening to audiobooks and dramas that I don't have in my Audible library. Then again, the technical issues are more important. I hope they fix them soon.
A decent app, but only real reason to use is that there are audio books on here not available through audible. Biggest issue causing it to be 2 stars is that it gives no option to download stuff when you aren't on wi-fi. I shall out for unlimited data, I shouldn't be blocked by an app. As it is, unless they change things, I likely wont be purchasing much at all after Sons of the Selenar.
Edit 6/15: It doesn't even play paid content correctly. Just started to play the same chapter twice, with a several-second delay on each track. No options for Support in the app, of course. Pauses playback anytime your phone received a notification. Back/forwards skips entire chapters rather than small chunks like every other audiobook app does. Will drop the book you're listening to if you open another app (like GPS). No longer has 99¢ sales, only grossly inflated GW pricing
Downloaded it to buy the Angels of Death soundtrack. It keeps getting stuck at preparing to download; the progress bar just keeps moving a little and resetting. Left it for several hours and it never changed when I'd check it. Hoping their servers are just slammed but doesn't look promising. Going to email them about getting a refund.
The app is a convenient way to access all of BLs audio work and they organize it between books and fully developed audio dramas which is nice. What isnt nice is the lack of a settings panel. Theres no way to tell the app to allow downloads over mobile data. And audio files are downloaded in their entirety, and not by chapter or part. So if you download a 13 hour audio book, you better do it all in a single unbroken session, theres no way to listen to chapter one while the rest downloads.
This app is both good and fustrating. Its good because what it does (give you 40K books in an audio format) is really good and solid I never have an issue with this app freezing or anything. Whats bad is that its missing alot of key features to make it more user friendly. Not complex things, just basic things like being able to search their catalog by author, or having some of the books in collections lists like the Guant's Ghost novels or Cain novels. But, again it works. Just need tweaks.
This is obviously just a money grab for Games Workshop. They've put next to no effort into its actual use. There is no Settings to work with. Notifications stop whatever you're listening to immediately. No way to control the book without having to go directly to the app itself. No organization for your Library. And no way to search books for your favorite factions. And barely anything to use to search for your favorite series. I won't spend another dollar on this until some major updates.
The app is pretty good and a nice place to have all your auidobooks in one place. However, the only main issue i have with it is that in order to run the app, you cannot have any other apps open at all. If you wish to listen to a book you have to close everything down, play the book, then put your phone down and not touch it. If you open up, say FB, or check a text message, then it will most likely stop playing the book, and you have to go in and reselect it to play again. Please fix that issue.
Overall I've enjoyed this app. It can be a little buggy, which brought it down to a 4/5. It's goes down because I recently downloaded an audio drama that didn't download the entire thing. It's listed at 1 hr 12 mins and I only got about 52 mins. When I emailed the team about it they responded saying they were working on it, then ghosted me. Lastly, you can't login to new devices with your account.
Absolutely garbage, but seemingly the only way to get the best books. Can't download. App will suddenly stop playing if other audio prompted (like Google maps). When audio stops, it clears the "now playing screen," and you have to go find your book again (I have a large selection). It doesn't have great filtering options in the store. Several more enhancements can be made for an app that's been around for almost a decade.
While the app does give access to many of the great audiodramas and audiobooks, the app itself works horribly. Every time you back out of a book, your filtering options get reset. The option to "hide completed books" never actually works. These and other minor annoyances just get frustrating beyond belief. I hope that they can spend some of their hundreds of millions of dollars to actually make this app work better.
