Very messy but cute, but messy. A little bit too complicated, and things i submit dont work or I have to make a whole separate document in order for it to work. Alot of my assignments go missing or lost. I sometimes miss assignments because either the teachers don't put due dates or the "to-do" is messy. The app is practically useless, as you mostly have to do everything on a computer, cause it won't let me sign in on my phone. Etc etc..
Reviews for Canvas
← Back to CanvasThere are way too many bugs and missing features on this app. Random crashes, not being able to go back into a paragraph to edit something (it just goes to the end after one character entry), screen time outs. There is no word count in the text block and the text tools are very limited. You can't see the original post when replying to a discussion. Very dissatisfied with this app. You're better off using the mobile website.
I really like it! I do think Google Classroom is a little bit better, because it is easier to create assignments (according to my social studies teacher), and it is just a little less confusing for the students because Canvas has more things that you are able to click on, that just aren't useful at all. It also took me, like, a month after downloading it for it to actually let me sign in. So yeah, it is pretty good, but it could be better
I use this for most of my course work and rely on it. However, there are a lot of bugs that need to be worked out. The To Do widget does not show the actual To Do list. Notifications do not always change to show they have been read. (I currently have several notifications that will not go away.) Some discussion comments always will not change to be read. Syllabi and embedded videos do not always work, same with some hyperlinks.
Normally worked fine on iPhone, on the s20+ it doesn't work reliably, which is very important when it comes to school. Edit. Reliability is an under statement. It will just randomly choose to not let you see your assignments or grades tab for some classes, and after that happens it never fixes itself. Regardless of resetting the app, phone, or even re-downloading.
It's Canvas, love or hate it. It's a faithful port from the website, and has some useful features like widgets and notifications. That said, the widgets are sort of a mess. They don't always update, so you could be relying on outdated information. On top of that, your "to-do list" widget doesn't clear your submitted assignments and has trouble with class discussions, so you're both missing discussions that are due, and being told that you still need to do assignments you've already completed.
Useless notifications. They all group up into one blob. It makes it so when I click on the notification of 3 notifications, it goes to a random 1. It then clears the other 2. The app is also different from the website. For example, I can't change the email notification settings (which is essential, due to the broken app notifications.) No dark mode
Kind of a mid app, but it needs to be better considering I need to use it every day. It is really slow for no clear reason, and the document scanner is trash. Also, sometimes it glitches out and makes me sign in to Microsoft, but no keyboard shows up for me to type in my password. And in the to do list I often mark things done that I did on paper, and no matter how many times I mark it done, it never goes away. Better than the website is on a phone, but that's not saying much.
It's usable, but it needs a bit of work. Duplicate notifications cannot be turned off, and after the recent updates, comments will not show up for assignments unless they're file submissions. Dark mode does not affect the actual document body of lessons. Marking a lesson as read and moving onto the next does not work. You have to mark it, refresh (sometimes several times) and THEN tap on the next page from Modules. Otherwise, the app works, I suppose.
The app works fine for getting a basic overview of things, like checking what's due and what your grades are, but too much of it doesn't work right. Assignments with long explanations only show the first few paragraphs, text post assignments don't tell you what the prompt is, dark mode consistently makes text unreadable, etc. Pretty much the only thing it's good for is telling me whether or not I need to open my computer to get a better look at what's going on. Don't expect to get any work done!
Most classes work only around 30% percent of the time. Many things such as: The app backs you out of the class for no reason leading to significant losses of work, announcements give no notifications whatsoever, any use of outside media is either extremely laggy and buggy or outright doesn't work. There are a lot of things that need to be addressed in this app and this program in general. The program has a good idea but it requires a greater execution.
Notification problem at the beginning of the semester. My notifications began to duplicate. It wasn't that much of an issue. Gradually, though, the number of duplicate notifications increased from 1 to 2 to 3 and so on... I have tried turning notifications on and off. The number of duplicates I receive currently stands at 8 per notification. What started as a stream has become a flood. I got a new phone and it's no longer a problem. Edit: it's back.......
In general I like the app, but I hate that I don't get notifications about grades posted, announcements, assignments due, etc. (even though I have it set to send me push notifications). Also, since the recent update, when I click on the app to open it, literally nothing happens. I have to go in through the play store to open it. Need a fix for that asap!
I really enjoy this app when it's working. I had this issue start about 6 months ago; I open the app, it takes me back to the beginning of "find my school" and when I log in it gives me an error message saying "clear text not permitted". I close the app wipe the cache login again and it works fine for maybe a day or two if I'm lucky and restarts the process. Super annoying when I'm trying to check announcements or review an assignment when I'm not at home. Really hope they fix this issue soon.
Professors organize things differently in assignments and modules, some things show up in to-do, while others do not. It would be nice to have only modules menu option for the weekly organization, and as a sub heading have assignments for that week. When taking tests it gives a "you are running out of time" pop up, which is not preferable when there is plenty of time left. Having all the questions on one page would be nice during tests.
I've used Canvas for years. The website is great, the app is borderline useless. The UI is unusable and it's impossible to access anything without receiving the infinite loading screen of death. I use the app purely for push notifications, which only goes so far. An instructor posted an announcement? Cool. I can't read it. Gotta get the laptop.
Works better on the computer. Sometimes with the app, the calendar won't load at all, it's just a blank page. I'll close and restart and it continues. I checked for updates, there aren't any. Honestly, too, I think developing a notification system would be a good idea, notifying students when assignments are added or due. EDIT: This review is over a year old and the calendar issue is still a regular thing.
The new update is horrible. Instead of only having the assignments that are due that week show on the To Do List, it shows every assignment for the rest of the semester. Along with this, I can't even remove the completed assignments from the list, which makes me think I haven't completed the assignment and stresses me out. Please go back to the original version, this one is horrible.
So... This worked great. Solid, good UI, totally a 5-star app. Then I had the audacity to need it for courses at two schools at once. Instead of, say, keeping me logged in to both and letting me switch with a simple drop-down (like email apps and websites have for over 25 years) it instead logs me out of both after short periods of inactivity--say, the time it takes to read a section and take a short quiz on a publisher's app. 1-star for failing at basic credential management.
I'm having a new issue after the update. when I tried to play a video that has an external link it says error has occurred. So instead I try turning my phone so I can see the video on the whole screen but it keeps going to video three of one. even though I'm playing 1. so I hear video one still playing while my view is a play option of the last lesson. it's all of my classes.
