An Almost Perfect Experience! I'd gladly pay $5 a month for premium (much higher than the actual cost), if I only had a way to access my journals some place other than my phone. Without a Mac or iPhone, however, I'm out of luck. Please, please finish development of a Windows desktop version, or at least a Chrome extension. Until then, I'll keep using Journey.
Reviews for Day One Journal: Private Diary
← Back to Day One Journal: Private DiaryI'm obsessed. I have always been a constant journal keeper and have mostly preferred handwritten books but this app has changed everything for me. I love having multiple journals, some photo-based, and tags as well to keep things organized across time and topics. The synchronization across devices would be better if it werent somewhat delayed, but it's still awesome!! Pricing is great too. Can't recommend highly enough!
So first off, let me give a positive review. I've been using this app for three-four years now, and I'm a fan. This is my journal, and I love it. With that said, it's been glitching a lot lately. The font changes when I'm typing (and when I change the font back, it ignores me) and now my autocorrect isn't working properly and words are stacking on top of each other. Kind of cumbersome really. App is good tho otherwise, just would love to have those bugs fixed :)
I was trying out the app and started an entry with just a title. Checked on my phone if it would show up and it did. Went back to my computer and wrote the entry; a couple paragraphs. Went back to my phone, opened the app and it said it was "synced" but the note still had only the title. Shortly after the text disappeared from the computer and returned back to the title only. Safe data sync is a must for this type of app. It's clearly not present or implemented very poorly.
I like plenty of the features in the app, but like others have stated, it's really annoying when words double up while typing. I also wish there were more font options. When I try to alter font size under settings, it doesn't actually change. I'd also like the option to toggle entry previews so I could just choose to view the titles of my journal entries to reduce visual noise.
The app so far is pretty great! I've only had it a little over a week so take me with a grain of salt. I have only one complaint thus far and that is when I retype a misspelled word, it auto corrects the word by doubling what I type. for example if I retype "stareotypical" as stereotypical, I would get "stereotypicalereotypical". confusing to relay so I apologize, granted it is twice as frustrating.
First off, I don't usually write reviews so writing one should tell you I'm passionate about these thoughts. If you have an android don't even bother downloading the app on your phone. Save yourself the heartache and literally hours of frustration. It takes up to much space on my phone, export does not work (after over a year of journal entries), it keeps crashing and android doesn't even have the capabilities of switching from app to browser support even with a paid subscription. They also don't offer publishing for android users. This app is just not ready for android users.
Had to downgrade my review. After getting a new phone, I realized my journal had stopped synching with the back up some time ago. I have no idea why. When I requested help from support (just to see if there was any work around), they informed me that they only "support" premium members. Really disappointed to lose several years of journaling.
I'm really surprised by the generous reviews here. Did somehow download an old version on my Chromebook? After pulling the trigger on the full year subscription in order to use my journal between my iOS and Android devices, I was disappointed to see that the Android app appears to be comically rudimentary and bare-bones compared to the excellent iOS version. Where are the text formatting features? An even bigger problem is not being able to edit journal entries between iOS and Android. I've gathered that this is an issue they're working on, but I'm kind of surprised that they would bother putting out such a flawed version of a paid app.
This app has the potential to be amazing. It is heavily designed for apple users. A couple things in my opinion that would get it to 5 stars is if you had the ability to log onto the desktop version and journal from their. Typing up my narratives from my phone is a bit cumbersome. Also, after I bought the membership is when I found out there is no capability to print books for the android users without using a 3rd party process.
Love it on Mac, loved it on my old iPhone, but I'm still waiting for parity on the Android app. I like being able to write in markdown, easily add images, manage multiple journals, and tag entries. The integrations are cool too. The Android app doesn't get much development attention though, and I prefer to journal from my phone and not my laptop, so it's a bummer.
Update: according to their Twitter feed, this version for Android is no longer being maintained while they explore ways to completely rebuild it. Doesn't make it sound like there will be anything soon. Need end to end encryption for Android. It's been "coming soon" for a very long time. Update: maybe they should remove the "coming soon to android" tag line from the app notes about the encryption. It's been over a year. Even outside of tech that's not very soon.
I used to be a frequent user of this app, but over time moved on to different kinds of journal apps that just fit me better. But when it comes to the category of traditional style journal apps, Day One wins the trophy. The ability to add multiple journals, images, location, weather, video, app lock, tags, among other great features + the minimalistic & CLEAN UI is painless to use.
Amazing journal. I love that I can make separate notebooks, customize my entries (underline, bold, bullet points, headings, etc), AND I can use their program via dayone website!( + syncs with little to no issues.) The interface is also very clean and simple! Keep up the great work! :)
I have lowered my original review due to an ongoing issue where the app and desktop client do not refresh properly. I have lost hours of typed content that is typed in to only go back later to find that when I opened my phone to double check it had copied over it instead Refreshes and erases what I just typed. it's happened considerably enough now that I will probably be looking for a new platform.
I've been using this app on my iPhone for over a year now and I love it. I recently switched over to the S25 Ultra and noticed a slight difference between how the font appears on iOS &, how it appears on Android. The default font appears smoothly throughout the ios version, but on android it's not the same. Please fix! The premium cost is still a bit too high in my opinion.
Not ready for prime time. Used this app for about a half hour, and the incompleteness of it kept adding up. Pretty sure it's still in Beta, so I'll wait for the actual product. My first grievance was that there's no way to change the font. Followed immediately by the "dealbreaker" that there's no way to lock it. Only started exploring the Windows version at this point - it was enough to turn a "maybe" into a solid "no". Also not thrilled about the RENTAL program (can't purchase).
Excellent with one exception: you cannot search inside a particular note. Here's how Day One search works - it returns a list of notes that contain your search term. You cannot search INSIDE a note using the Day One app. This is a huge deficiency. To get around this, use your PC to open Day One on the web. However, this does not work from your mobile device. If you try to use a web browser to access the Day One website you are redirected to the app. Bummer.
This is a decent, reasonably simple, although somewhat minimalistic diary. Has "daily prompts" you can answer, and a significant amount of templates to cover all of your basic Journaling needs. I just wish the app was not so bare minimal, but offered more tools and unique features that allowed one to toon into their creativity more. The customization features are lackluster and the interface could use a decent upgrade, but aside of then that this is a decent app with plenty to offer still.
It's ridiculous that our paid family account doesn't allow anyone but the primary to add videos and audio, the invited people can't even see or hear those, and the invited people can only do one image per post. It used to be different and better. Now that they've taken away those features, we have to buy 4 more accounts for Day One to be worth using- which we can't do ... it's too expensive. They should at least give a substantial discount
