Many times, whenever I press the speaker button to hear the audio pronunciation of words, error message appears "Network access is required". The problem is only solved when I close the app, and after that it works fine. If it happened just once in a while, I would have ignored it, but the issue keeps recurring in an annoying way.
Reviews for Dictionary - M-W Premium
← Back to Dictionary - M-W PremiumExcellent reference. Frustrating user interface. 1. When starting a search on opening the app or after long inactivity, the onscreen keyboard closes abruptly and I must tap and restart my search. 2. When reading an entry, any touch on the screen jumps to the entry for the word touched. Then... 3. There is no easy way to return after such an accident: neither the Android "back" button nor a search history. I reported these at least twice over the years but nothing has changed.
Update made the app useless! This app used to work flawlessly, but since the last update I keep receiving "not enough storage space" errors, and I can't look up anything. I am also unable to log onto the app with ny username/password. The website recognizes my login info without any issues, the app "can't find" my account 🤔. Emailed support with only an automated response, and no solution back. Premium users should get better customer service than that.
Fantastic and informative, larger than other dictionary apps with neat games and a word of the day. Only wish we could submit words to be added to the next version. Still have to search 5% of words elsewhere. Great overall and so thankful there are no ads!!!! Hard enough to jump from text to dictionary without an ad distracting me. Thanks MW for great dictionaries online and on paper!
The best dictionary available. It's easy to use, has a clean interface, and accepts both type and voice queries. It also contains word quizes to help strengthen your vocabulary. As well as a "Word of the Day" vocabulary builder. In General, this is a fantastic dictionary/thesaurus. Oh, did I mention, it also has a thesaurus with it? The Premium version is worth every penny, I recommend purchasing that straight away after installing. One more thing worth mentioning; this app NEVER crashes.
While not as complete as the Unabridged edition from Paragon when they were licensed to distribute, the addition of the thesaurus is handy sometimes. This edition appears to lack a complete list of entries, alphabetically arranged or otherwise, akin to having the book in my hands. Maybe it's not a requested feature by the majority any longer and I'm just an old GenX person out of touch with reality.
This is an amazing app and an incredible companion for those who like to read. It helps me tackle more difficult texts and increase my vocabulary. One suggestion I have is being able to create groups of words looked up. That way I can group words I looked up from a particular book. That would be an amazing feature. Thanks for this essential app
This is the abridged version. I bought this thinking it would be the complete and unabridged M-W dictionary and it's not. So for definitions of rare or archaic words, you have to go to the web site, which - surprise - asks you to pay again for the unabridged dictionary. The app itself is fast and works well. My complaint is primarily with the content.
Can't say it's okay on account that it is lacking on several words now; the latest one being 'selacious'. (Has it on their website though) Oh I appreciate the app dearly but i don't know, I thought it is like the go-to dictionary and so i don't understand why it would have all the werdzzz. Also, you have to know the correct spelling of the word, otherwise your search will come up empty; allowing for suggestions with the search engine would be helpful.
This dictionary serves my needs for having a tool to quickly define words with examples of how to use the words. Also includes synoyms for word replacements. IMHO, the available recent word look up list can be like having bookmarks. Text is easy to see. Only thing is the pronounciation voice icon next to the words do not work on my phone; don't know why or how to fix if there is one.
This app is missing words (e.g. "plotz") that are present in the free web version, which seems unacceptable for a paid app. Some of the features from the website (such as recent usage examples and search suggestions) are also missing from the app. There are also cases where tapping a word in a definition takes you to the wrong link (e.g. "Muslim" sends you to the old-fashioned "Moslem"). On the positive side, the layout is very clean and easy to read, better than the web version.
Great as far as dictionaries go, but very annoying that you cannot touch any word without it jumping to the definition of that word. Makes scrolling very hard, and you cannot go back...you have to look up the original word to get back to it. It's like they were trying to be helpful, but forgot to test the functionality to see just how annoying it is...
Works great if the voice search worked. I get an error message after tapping the microphone stating that it's not available without an internet connection. That is, while I am connected to my WiFi with internet connection; go figure! And, there are no settings in this app, zero settings, so there is no way to correct this voice search issue that is NOT my issue. I won't invest in an upgrade and may stop using this app since there are many other dictionary apps like Oxford, Cambridge, & OneLook.
Disappointing app for a litany of reasons—typos, formatting errors, lackluster pronunciations—but one of the most regularly frustrating is that when searching for a word with an established prefix, e.g., "non," the word will show in the results, but when you select it, what comes up is merely the entry for the generic prefix rather than the specific prefix-containing word, which _does_ have its own page in the online dictionary. This is a cheap cop-out.
At least one other user has the same exact complaints as I have! 1. When I open the app to search, I begin to type, usually about 3 letters, and the keyboard suddenly closes, and I have to start the search again. 2. The screen is very reactive. Any hesitant touch will open the word your finger happens to be on and away you go! Usually on some small, everyday word. 3. I am repeatedly asked to buy the upgrade even though I am signed in to my paid version. I'll be looking for something else.
On the original version of the page, it displayed at the top concise text for commonly used meaning. so that you don't have go down to the full definition. Recently, they removed that. Instead, now every page displays a useless large-font title "Collegiate Definition". By doing further research, it turns out that these concise text are from learner's dictionary which they now separately charge. I understand they need revenue to support the app. I will also understand if they adopt annual subscription model. I don't mind purchase the learner's dictionary. But it would be very inconvenient to look up a single word from two different apps.
This dictionary used to be great. One used to be able to have 3 ways to search. You could search for a word that appeared in the definition, or use ambiguous place holders like "abr????" etc. Now there is zero ability to search with more advanced functionality. Now, it's one of my least favorite dictionaries. Plus, they try to force you to "login". In short, they no longer make great dictionaries, but rather "a dictionary user experience" PO'd I paid for this before their "improvement"
I love the ease and simplicity of the application. Furthermore, I find so many different ways utilize it, in an effort to improve my own reading, writing, and language comprehension. I even realized that unconsciously, through repeated use of the app, my spelling has even improved drastically. I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who speaks, reads or writes in gibberish, slang, memes, gifs, emojis, wingdings, text, emails, or simply wants to be taken seriously.
Weird bug .... but when first launching the app and tapping into the search 🔍 bar, the keyboard comes up and then automatically closes after 2-3 seconds. It only happens once after a fresh launch, but it's INCREDIBLY annoying because it basically screws up whatever you were trying to type! Also, the mechanism for switching to the thesaurus while viewing a word isn't immediately obvious at first – it was years before I noticed it down at the bottom! But it's a super handy feature to have…
I use this dictionary a lot, and I like it for the most part. It's super handy for finding definitions and showing your friends that they're pronouncing a word wrong. The thesaurus feature is cool as well. The one issue I have with it is that when I'm searching for a word, the keyboard will randomly collapse while I'm typing, and I'll accidentally press a random word from the list. I don't know if it's a bug in the app or maybe just my device.
