The Ads are intrusive & annoying, plus to remove the Ads you have to pay $1,99 USD a year, which I find to be ridiculous. Talk about GREEDY!!! LOL! There are only 3 word games & the light mode is the only unlocked mode! Plus, this App takes up a lot of space on my phone! There are a lot of other dictionaries & thesaurus's that are free & you don't need internet access to use them! I don't recommend this App, unless you want to watch a lot of intrusive Ads, & waste space & money!!!
Reviews for Dictionary - Merriam-Webster
← Back to Dictionary - Merriam-WebsterI have long subscribed to this app as I think their $6 annual fee is reasonable. However the app appears to be getting worse in each update. Searches take longer and longer, and if you have a poor connection never return at all. If you are completely offline they usually come back faster. Please fix this or I will be back on the hunt for a better dictionary.
The app often starts searching after only 3 letters of a word are typed. For example, when searching "example" after typing in the first 3 letters, exa, the app will search for that. You then have to retype the word you are looking for. Not a huge deal, but it's quicker to just Google the word. Additionally, the word of the day is almost always some common word that everyone knows. It does not provide any incentive to use the app. The app is also not comprehensive so it makes me atrabilious.
Hard to navigate and lacking etymologies. Using this app, I was constantly annoyed by two navigation issues: every word in a definition is secretly a link, and going back takes you to the dictionary home page. So I would frequently tap a word in a definition by mistake, see an ad followed by the misclicked word's definition, try to go back, and finally just search the original word again. I'm now a happy paying user of the Oxford dictionary app
12/21/2021 Negative Update: When I try to press the sound button for pronunciation there's about a 25 second delay in sound. This has never happened. It must have occurred after the most recent update ("self-update"). Definitely 2/5 stars until they fix the lag. 06-2020 My go-to dictionary when using my phone. Not only do I use it to search definitions but it's very valuable when becoming familiar with proper pronunciation. 4/5 stars (-1 star due to ads, but still useful).
There are couple of dictionary apps of big names on Play Store but most of them are badly written or the ads are so annoying you can't easily read the things you want. This app is different though, nicely written, interestingly has far more archaic words (lots of words i couldn't find on Oxford app for example) and so far almost never disappointed me. I really like the extra stuff like word of the day, the game, etymological information (personally I love them more than the meaning xD)
When I tried changing my password, the new password didn't work! The app was good, but I've uninstalled due to being unable to reset my password. After further research, I see that the price went up by $1, which is fine. I may reinstall the app and pay the annual fee IF my password is accepted and the app lets me in. Will up to 5 stars if things go well.
This app is pretty good. Ironically or not, it's better to run it without data/Wi-Fi because the dictionary entries load much faster that way. I love that this works offline, but it's annoying that I have to turn off the internet to get it to load entries in a reasonable amount of time. I wish that the entries gave more detailed etymology information. I like that I can save words, although I haven't reviewed them yet to verify the saving works.
Maybe if you subscribe to the paid version it'll be better. Free is terrible, just go use the web-browser version. Ads pop up whenever I search a word, and clicking the audio playback for listening to pronunciations also does not work. (It spits back an error saying "network connection required," which is just the cherry-on-top because like; how do you think you are looking up ads and finding me these words without a network connection anyways?)
I've had this app for about five years now. When I first got the app, the ads were unobtrusive, and it loaded searches very quickly. It's been steadily downhill ever since. Ads now pop up and cover the whole screen, and it takes significantly longer to load definitions and searches, especially compared to how it used to be near-instantaneous. Very disappointing.
I used to dictionary in the past mainly to check her spelling. However I started using it again and purchased a subscription to add legal, medical, and children's dictionaries for an incredible price of only $5.99 per year. I can't get into any of those extra dictionaries and I cannot get a decent response from the company by email. There is no way on the site that tells you how to use it or Access the additional purchases. I will try and find a way to get my money back because it is a rip off.
It's not loading definitions. It takes multiple attemps. And when I get tire of waiting, I end up doing a web search instead. Also, with this app, you must spell a word exactly if you want to find it. This is another thing forces me to do a web search instead. I mean, you should use this app at all? I looked up the prefix "pale-" and sent to word "pale".
the best dictionary app there is. I've had it on the front screen of my phone(s) for years. one can save words, see recent lookups, access the thesaurus, (and save words from there as well), and read the information provided about the word of the day. I do wish more articles were available in the app, but I'm fine using the website for those, (exceptional writing, btw).
I would have given this app a 5 star rating except for the fact that Webster allows ads to take over the screen that you can't get off. You have to close out the app in order to close the ads. There's no x to close out the ad and I suspect if there were you would still be drawn to an unwanted ad. Otherwise it's a great dictionary. Having to pay for the app is ridiculous. I have plenty of dictionaries. It's just easier and more convenient than a book.
This app is wonderful, but the most recent update has made it a bit frustrating. Even though I recognize that it takes money to keep apps functional, I was still sad about the ads coming in. I purchased the yearly subscription because I love the convenience of having a dictionary in my pocket (being a hobby writer that comes in so handy), but now the app closes randomly while I'm reading definitions or searching for words. I don't know what happened, but I hope it's fixed soon.
This used to be my favorite app on my phone for looking up quick definitions of words, especially during my morning Bible study. The most recent update, has made the app, almost unusable. It is now inundated with ads, and when you type in a word, the word comes up, but every time you go to slide up or down, a new word pops up in the search block, forcing you to starr over. Most of the words that pop up don't have anything to do with your original search. Very frustrating.
Very difficult and frustrating to simply look up a word without the focus going to something else, because the app is very sensitive to touches. As you move down to read a definition, it is very easily activated to go to something else (to another related word or an ad). There is not a way to go back to the word being looked up without starting over and re-entering it. The app is not very user friendly.
Does what I want: provide definitions of words. Ads are banner style and relatively unobtrusive, and the subscription to get rid of them is dirt cheap at $3/year. Also has a thesaurus and some nice things like word games and a word of the day. Edit: there are some pretty annoying bugs. Sometimes the app will just freeze, sometimes it'll load indefinitely and I have to restart it.
The app doesn't work as stated. I contacted support by email and their response was "noted'. no help, but a few links and nothing of value. It said before I downloaded it that word finder was part of the app. A simple question, but their support desk could not tell me either way. It is ok as a dictionary only. the layout is not functional and no search tool for parts of the app such as word finder. Not worth the money, maybe ok as free, but I made the mistake of paying for remove ads as 2 many
I purchased the ad-free version several years ago. I use the thesaurus daily. I love the app, and I love having unfettered access to a great dictionary & thesaurus. I only have 2 complaints about the app; first, when I open the app and put my cursor in the search bar, the keyboard disappears even if I am typing; and second, in 2024, the price went from $1.99/year to $5.99/year.
