Just finished the AZT. Loved the App for knowing at all time where I was. However, I wished I could have identified more mountain ranges, or summits, or any features around the trail. Put name on what I was seeing. Also, roads should show more clearly maybe. I had problems adding reports. But reading others was great. Thanks a lot. You are doing a great job.
Reviews for FarOut
I've found this app to be incredibly useful while on trail and also while setting at the house planning your next section. I recently had an issue with it loosing my AT map purchase. Being off trail it wasn't a big deal, but I can imagine how frustrating it would be to lose it while hiking. I'm pleased to say that after I sent an email to customer service, they resolved the problem even though it was on the Weekend. They really take care of it's customers!
This app is only useable if you pay for the subscription or buy a guide and it seems to only be for people doing really long hikes, thinks days to months. I'm rating it 1 star because that needs to be made clear in the description, instead of having people download the app, create an account, and then delete the app. Plus the only way to delete your account is to email them and wait for their response, which is bull.
This app is incredibly cool, but I can't count on it to work. I purchased the Ouachita Trail in Arkansas, and then started hiking. The app always opened for me, but I could only get the map I purchased to load twice!! I had even downloaded it for offline use before I left home. I emailed the Guthooks people (Atlas) 2 months ago, but they've never even responded. I spent 4 hours one day, going 2 miles because the trail was almost totally unmarked, and of course the app didn't work. $20 wasted
Overall invaluable to Hikers! World like maps to auto load when you searching between sections of the map. Moving back and forth when you're at the end/beginning is tedious. Also would really love the ability to pick a start and stop point and get data when planning ahead for future days! When sitting at a hostel, it would make the planning easier. But overall, we love it! OMG! I never knew that existed!! Watched the video and just planned a route. That's so helpful. Thank you!
This is an essential app for hikers that I wouldn't do without. Having said that it still often seems I'm using a beta version. It may ask me 20 times to turn on GPS "for a better experience", of course it's been on all the time. It also has a problem with dropping comments, one of the most useful reasons for using the app. There's even a "force reload comments" drop-down on the menu. It's good enough now and can still improve.
Was recently a 5 Star app. Too many changes have ruined this once great App. Has become unreliable. You are likely (at inopertune times) to try to open the app (that was working an hour earlier) and find that it says you have to buy the maps you have purchased and were just using. Unfortunately this happened recently on the AT with no wireless service. Useless if you can't access your purchases. I have had to remove and reload the app more times than is excusable. They have ruined a good thing!
The new version keeps kicking me out randomly, which makes it really inconvenient when trying to save routes. Often says "session aborted" Edit: this is not a support issue, it's a design one. If you are in areas with bad cell signal (on a long hike, what are the chances?) it kicks you out. There is no option to store all data offline. That's a poor design.
Reduced to one star because all of my purchases were wiped from my account. Every single time I've emailed them with an issue, they have insisted they've never heard of that problem before and assure me that they're correct. Support is useless. Not only did I triple crown with FarOut maps (to supplement other guides), I had purchased about a dozen others. My library now says zero purchases. This company sucks.
This is definitely the best GPS app for thru hiking. Waypoint photos allow you to get a glimpse of shelters, campgrounds, parking areas, and more! The user comments are extremely helpful for real-time updates on wildlife activity, water availability, closures, etc. Well worth the money! I also bought some of the regional map bundles and they are super helpful for trip planning, but the custom route option is a bit finicky, so I'd like to see that ironed out a bit so I can get rid of AllTrails.
