So here's my take on GENKI Vocab for 3rd Ed. I've tested a bunch of Japanese learning apps and this one's pretty solid, especially if you're using the GENKI textbooks. The vocab coverage is great and the different study modes make it easy to practice. I like that it's free to use, though the ads can get a little intrusive. The UI is also a bit cluttered, but it's not a dealbreaker. Overall, if you need to build your GENKI vocab, this is a handy companion app worth trying.

Description

Been using GENKI Vocab for 3rd Ed. for a couple months now. It’s basically an app that helps you learn over 1,200 essential Japanese words from the GENKI textbooks. Pretty solid if you’re studying Japanese.

There’s a bunch of features – you can view the words, listen to the pronunciations, and even take quizzes to test your knowledge. It’s got flashcards, games, and other study tools to make learning the vocab more fun. Took me a while to figure out some of the features but they’re all pretty useful.

Look, if you’re using the GENKI books, you’ll probably get a lot of use out of this app. It’s not perfect – the UI can be a bit confusing at first and the ads can get annoying. But overall it does a good job of helping you build your Japanese vocab. Worth checking out if you want an easy way to supplement your GENKI studies.

Good app, but missing the icon when set to round icons, when they fix that, five stars!

Linh Trinh October 16, 2025

Didn't have all the words from the book. I bought this app so I don't have to carry the big book around to study new words.

A blue speaker button covers the text in flashcards. This makes app unusable. Not found how to (re)move it.
