Reviews for Google News - Daily Headlines

← Back to Google News - Daily Headlines

I got this for a magazine subscription as Google Assistant already gives me general news links. But it's really bad for magazine management. If you're reading a long article, short story, or novella, it forgets your place when you return to the app. Navigation within the magazine requires too many steps to get around. The magazines you purchase are hard to find. It's good for single short articles, but the UX doesn't do full issues well at all.

This App is a serious data hog and unfortunately, I'd rather have the old app. I burned nearly an entire month's worth of data with my carrier in less than an hour on this new app, and all I was doing was reading the news. There was no available wireless connection. If there is a way to throttle the data usage, it's not obvious. I've had to uninstall it and turn on all my data conservation modes for the next 3 weeks. It's pretty, but if it burns data, it's not useful.

When reading the articles, Google News will occasionally reload, taking you to the top of the list. Selecting an article to read never returns you to the same point in the list, so you are constantly scrolling, and never know where you are in the list, unless you are at the top again. Also see an increase in the siloing of opinion, as I see far fewer articles with differing opinions. It is a nicer interface and has more to read than before.

GONE is the ability to automatically open stories in an external browser. GONE is the ability to browse news without being logged in - so they can track what you read and you end up seeing the same kinds of stories all the time because they're being "helpful". Stay out of my business, Google. I like seeing lots of different kinds of stories from many different sources, not your "curated" news.

App has not updated news articles in eleven days. Also loses your place returning to the top. All in all not Google's finest effort! Update 5/15/18 Gee, I never would have figured that out! That was the first thing I did!!!!!!!!!!! Update 5/2/19 Now it updates constantly, and speaking of constantly, notifications all the time with no way to stop them! And forget about filtering content. My feed is littered with sites I have no interest in and in languages I do not speak.

No matter how many times I banish certain topics (for instance, sports and entertainment), these stories incessantly clutter my feed. Hitting "see less of [x]" clearly does nothing. For that reason, I'll be looking for an alternative to Google News—if it weren't for that glaring failure, the app would be just fine and usable, but as it is, it's more trouble than it's worth.

Can you please add "save for later" and "more like this" buttons? Sometimes I don't have time to read right that second but it captures my interest, only for all the stories I hearted to go missing after the auto-refresh. There's a bookmark article button, but that's only if you click into the story. I appreciate getting to dismiss what I don't like, but the algorithm isn't swift enough to understand what I DO like, at least not now. A "more" button would be easier. Thank you.

Can't easily filter out news sources that I don't like. I don't want spoilers from movies and TV shows, and they're fairly frequent. Also, on a limited data plan, this app chewed through 2+ GB of data in a couple hours in the background, not even using it. Fix these issues, and I might give it another chance, until then, I'm uninstalling it.

So much less than the old news and weather app. I can't choose my topics, I can't remove things like sports, I cant add interest features, even mini cards take up a good portion of the screen, I can't add local sections for more than my current location, the local weather is less useful and doesn't give same granularity of detail. I guess data harvesting is easier for Google. Very disappointed I'm stuck with this for news and I'm actively looking for alternatives.

This app sucks compared to the old news and weather app. It doesn't fit in the same space, it takes up so much more room. I don't want to see all kinds of pictures, I just want headlines, like the old app and have the ability to click what I want to read. It gets worse, I'm trying to read something and it moves off the screen by itself. It also just refreshes by itself. You're reading something and about to click it to read more and then it refreshes and it's gone. Why try to make this all cute and animated? I just want the news!

Really poor upgrade from the old News and Weather app. Can no longer customize the Headlines section, you are forced to depends Google's "For You" algorithm. No settings are transferred from the old app, including subscription information. You'll have to fill that out again, and it didn't even work for me when I did. Weather takes a click to see now. All in all a remarkably lazy effort. Will be using News as long as I can.

I can't stand this app. I don't want video links dominating the news. Almost 100% of the notifications don't work (by the time I click on them, it takes me an empty list of "recent notifications", and provides no way to get to the story). The embedded browser is obnoxious and behaves awfully; I just had one instance where I clicked on a story, and it just brought me to list of other articles by the same publisher. Where is the story whose headline I actually clicked on?

Incredibly buggy. Feels like it's still in alpha, not even beta yet. Google's "simplified view" for web pages is NOT user friendly -- it forces a small font that's difficult to read, and when you zoom, you can't drag, so you have to zoom out and back till you can focus on what you actually want to see. Most embedded videos don't even work -- however the ads do :-\ . This app is not ready for prime time.

Overall I enjoy the app. video playback implementation could use a lot of work in the news articles that contain video. most of the time I struggle to get the video to play full screen, and then if you rotate your device the video stops playing and it goes to the top of the news article. Then if you press play trying to pick up where you left off the video starts over often with another ad.

Terrible. First of all, the stories often freeze while I'm scrolling through them, making it take forever to read them. I often don't make it all the way through. It seems to freeze mostly as it's loading an ad that I'm trying to scroll past, so I end up stuck on a blank, unloaded ad that I won't be reading anyway. Even worse, if I rotate the phone, it reloads the entire news story and restarts at the top, so I lose my place. (It's easy to do this accidentally if I move across the room to, say, take something off the stove. It happens all the time.) On top of that, some the news sites limit me to maybe 3 stories a month, and when I rotate the phone and it reloads the page, that counts as another story. I can reach my limit on a single story. Overall, it's a very poorly thought-out and poorly written app.

Unlike the older version, I could no longer login to my current Washington Post subscription due to bugs, so I couldn't read more than a few stories a month in my subscribed newspaper. It also wouldn't remember that I was logged in to my local paper subscription, so I had to login again any time I saw a headline that I wanted to check out. When I contacted customer service (about the first issue, which seemed most pressing), I received no reply. Another annoyance is that the only available widget is the large one. The old version had a smaller widget that didn't include large pictures, and it fit my screen better. It would be nice if they had kept that as an option.

This app has gotten more frustrating to use. First, they don't offer any kind of protection against aggressive ads. It's extremely common for the entire page to be covered with ads, forcing me to open the article in a different browser, just to read it. And the app keeps only half loading pages. I'll be half way through reading an article, when the words stop and it's just a white page. Very disappointing.

Each new incarnation of Google news has been more tedious and less intuitive than the last. First swiping away articles disappeared, now the articles are grouped by topic. While this is great in theory, entire topics can't be removed at one time. For example, if I'm not interested in reading about the stock market crash, I have to give all five of the associated articles a "thumbs down" individually. It is also no longer possible to designate non-preferred topics in the feed. To use the stock market example again, the prior option of, "not interested in stories about the stock market" has been removed. I feel that I'm now spending more time clearing out the things I don't want to read than accessing articles of use or interest. The lack of scrolling in the widget is also disappointing. On a brighter note, the new app is pretty.

used to be a good app. now not so much. too many items hidden behind pay walls. need a way to suppress those. I don't want large pictures in the feed index. this recently changed. I want to read the news not look at pictures. I'm not sure if there is another app that does this but I'm looking. 8/23 now borders on useless. no mini cards at all. I want news not pictures

I HATE that I had to get rid of the Google News and Weather app. I loved the weather widget, and there are none like it that show you in one row the weather for the next few days, with the highs and lows. Also, can't find a good app to show you the weather in the app quickly for the temp, humidity, precipitation and wind nicely. FINALLY, where are the Local sections? Those were my favorite pieces...
