Reviews for Google Voice

8/3/2018 Still can't send/receive videos but other than that it's a great app. 10/2/2025 Can receive very small video files but still can't send/receive audio files such as mp3 which is frankly pathetic in this day and age. Still has lots of catching up to do but I guess I can't complain much since the voice calling works well and is a great feature.

Great app, but with one major flaw. Be aware that on the free plan you can not set a seperate ringtone or notification sound for this app as seperate from any other app. A missing basic app feature i expect of any app on my phone. Google does suggest some work around to be able to know if a call is coming through the app vs the phones native line, but it does not work as intended. In some cases I can tell visually when looking at the phone, but in some cases I can not.

I love this app! It is one of the easiest and most stable secondary number apps I have found to date. As long as you've got a strong wi-fi signal, mobile data is NOT required to receive and make phone calls. Also great to give out if you don't want someone having your actual number. You have the ability to forward all calls to your real number, or someone else's number. And it can show up as your Google voice number, or the number that is calling you. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The app is really a 5-star option for replacing Skype. I'm facing issues with Google Voice on my Windows 10 desktop, as it can't make calls. This highlights how Skype had a superior desktop experience, which is crucial for communication apps. I’ve followed all recommended troubleshooting steps, such as removing extensions, checking the firewall, and clearing cache and cookies, but nothing has worked. I need both the app and desktop to function properly, which will determine continued use.

Edit: Although I have a regular number, I use Google Voice on a very regular basis - a number that I can give that I will likely have for a long time. .Unlike other free numbers, it accepts verification texts from businesses and other accounts. Disregard: The issue with Voice I have is for beginning users, the tie with hangouts and the confusion with that. Now it's supposed to be untied to Hangouts which is great and I'll change my review to 5 when I see that the usability is much improved.

I have used this app for about 10 years and have no complaints. I wondered if you could include a feature to limit the number of rings on incoming calls, especially from callers not listed in my contacts. It's VERY frustrating that we receive so many unsolicited and spam calls. Since the calls can't be stopped, limiting the number of rings will make it a little less annoying. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I have used this app for my business line for the past almost 6 years. Never had a problem. literally the day before yesterday, all of a sudden, I can't text. I keep getting a fail message "acceptable use." Literally nothing has changed in what I do. So even if the number texts me first. I can't even reply to clients I have been text for years! Dont get this app if you actually plan on texting. And there's no customer service to even request a review. It's just useless.

I have been using Google Voice for years! I love being able to have the same number I've had for decades, despite having gone through numerous phones, without porting my number each time! I also live that I can make and receive calls, and read and send messages, from my laptop, my phone, and my tablet! The spam blocking works pretty well -- some manage to get past any system! -- and messages get sent to me as a text so I don't often have to listen to them.

The install process for this app is fairly easy, such as granting the required permissions, approving contacts access, etc. Then, in the app settings, selecting which options to use for the various functions is not difficult. But it does involve some thought and testing (sending and receiving calls and messages, etc.) to make sure the app performs per the user's preferences. Haven't run into any issues, it works as described, so 5 stars.

I love the Google number and the fact that it never expires, you can use it for phone calls and messages on any device with a speaker and a microphone. It's a great backup phone number to use for account recovery purposes. It has saved me so many times when I've broken or lost my phone or phone number changed. my only complaint is that I can't use two Google voice numbers on the same device. You can have dual accounts for many other apps on one device. Come on Google, let's make that happen!

Works great for calling while traveling abroad. Managing voicemail is awesome, they all get transcribed and you can set up text messages for areas without data. Unfortunately development has been stagnant on this app for a few years now, and it would be awesome to have RCS for this service. I took a star off my review due to these two issues.

The app has been working pretty well lately. I've been using the Google Voice service for. over a decade & even through multiple carrier changes, I haven't had to give out a new number since! Anyone who I no longer wanted to receive calls from either got blocked, or a personal outgoing voicemail message explaining why I won't knowingly take their calls anymore... There are lots of options available through the service... spend a little time on the web version & check them out.

Google voice is super convenient for an android user like me who doesn't have a cell plan but am often around wifi. It's not perfect because it tells on the quality of the wifi connection that is frequently quite imperfect. Voices cracking or breaking up is fairly common, and it's not unknown for the call to be cut off completely. But, once again, it all comes down to the quality of the wifi you're using. By and large, it works well. 5 stars from me.

After the last update, it keeps telling me to give Voice access to all my phone Contacts! (not just my Google contacts). It won't let me do anything with the app if I don't click the "OK" button. It won't even let me back out of it (have to force stop). There's no option for "skip" or "not right now" etc. In the past I've NEVER had to allow Google Voice to access to my phone contacts, and the app worked fine. If that's a required permission now, I'll just stop using Google Voice.

Some recent update KILLED the app's efficiency. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say it takes FOREVER for texts to update on the list. I get notifications of incoming texts but the list of texts doesn't update, so I'm not able to actually read the text until I wait a minute or two for the app to do whatever it's doing and it finally updates. (no, it's not my sync settings)

the new update is causing issues. when you type it doesn't start out sentences after a period or the first sentence with an uppercase letter as you can see because I'm using Google Voice to Type this. the only way you can actually get a capital at the beginning of a sentence is to use a proper noun order something that begins with I, I've or I'd. it's messed up and I wish they'd fix it. also for some reason it's spelling out punctuations at times. unfortunately that did not happen this time.

Google Voice works fine for the basics—calls, texts, and voicemail all do what they’re supposed to. But it feels outdated compared to other messaging apps. There’s no option to react to a message (like a thumbs up or heart) and you can’t respond to a specific message in a thread. Those two features are pretty standard now and would make conversations a lot smoother. Until then, it feels a little behind the times.

Google voice has been my go to app for VoIP since day 1. I use it on my laptop with Chrome and have used it on many Android devices with no issues. I like that you get a different number besides your cell number too. I can send unlimited messages, make unlimited calls and receive pics, gifs, and files. When my mobile device doesn't have service somewhere, Google Voice backs me up. Thanks! I highly recommend this app versus text now or telegram. There's no ads, it's free and no scammers!!

Best free call and messaging app in the world, hands down! Facebook messenger is a close second for reliability, but again, no bells or whistles, plain and simple, Google Voice works. And you can port your number and you can choose your number!!! Yay team! But lately I am not receiving my sms verification codes, which is especially a hassle when it's the only number I can use where I live, in a remote forest area. The Help files don't help.

love that no matter how long it's been in between using the app, you are able to hold onto your number- vs other apps that recycle your number after "x" amount of time without using. I also like that it can be set up to ring thru to my regular sim card number, or even multiple numbers consecutively. It's also nice to have the "visual voicemail" option, or have messages forwarded through to your email address.
