Reviews for Handy Art Reference Tool

← Back to Handy Art Reference Tool

Love it except for when I just want to view a face and don't want to make a whole scene I have to click about 3 x's to exit. A small thing, and I get why you have scenes and it's good but still annoying. Other than that well worth the buy. I'm a beginner artist and it's helped immensely.

Honestly one of my favorite things to use for art references because even when getting the perfect photo for what I want to draw, there is still details like head position, hands, etc I often need a better reference of and that's where this tool comes into play. Especially since you can move the individual fingers of the hand models.

Very good for reference. Paying extra for the female foot and animals skulls are totally worth it! I expected there to be full model poses for reference but those can be found in other places. I love the lighting feature and the different references are super dynamic. 100% recommend this no matter what artist you are.

I mean. I love that you can change the colors of the lighting and such. But I was disappointed when that's all you could really do. The app would be 10/10 if they had full bodies too and if you can change the express of the head models. And if it was just more customizable all over. I'm disappointed. It had a lot a lot a lot of potential.

Exactly what it says on the tin! If you are an artist struggling with drawing heads and hands on multiple angles, i highly recommend this app! If you're looking for a more "complete" full 3d posable model experience, this app isn't for you, but if you got the gesture basics down but struggle in complex body structures, this one's for you!

The models are so low quality and the apps features are so limited I decided to go with Nomad sculpt and some free 3d models from artstation and gumroad. Initial cost was higher but its far better than this app that has already glitched and removed the in app purchases I made to unlock the content that should be free from the start. Thanks devs!

I love it! Sometimes its hard to look for references online but with this it made my life easier. There are presets already in the gallery you can change the lighting and angles of your desired pose and even adjust the structure of the hands or feet. Definitely worth the price. 💯👌

Asked for a refund because even though I paid for the app you still have to pay for other features like animal skulls or feet models. Also something that I was expecting is that they isn't any models of the body. Some good features like rotation and saving and they're alot of references for hands and head, therefore this app is great for that. I just don't expect to pay for other features after paying for the app, the feet model are even on show in the pictures.

My only issues are a) I wish there were more options for faces with different features, like thinner and thicker heads, maybe muscle vs skinny vs chubby, etc. The male head for example looks a bit too much like a body builder. And b) I wish there was a way to rotate the head without changing its angle to the camera, like clockwise or counter-clockwise, since getting it back to straight is almost impossible without restarting the app. Other than that it's a great reference tool.

The app is easy to use, has lots of useful tools - all very simple to get working, yet very effective - and takes but a few seconds to bring up a bunch asorted of references for Hands, Heads, Feet and Skulls. There ARE some stuff locked behind paywall, but they are very very cheap. I love the app, and it helped me out several times. I recommend it.

I love this tool!! It's so handy! ;) however I wish there were more props/references like animals, paws, tails, ears, things like that. I have a lot of hybrid characters of human and animal, and would love if I were able to add such things like that onto my characters with better references. I hope the developers will consider this!

This app is literally so... handy. Just having this as an option has convinced me to draw more, easy access to references and being easy to customize. Sometimes it can be hard finding refs of exactly the pose I want. Only used it for hands so far but it's great. I love that you can modify the lighting as well. Really recommended!

It's good, it works as a lighting reference too, though there's microtransactions if you want feet and animal skulls references in this (paid) app, which is unfair in my opinion. You can't change the head models' facial expressions to my knowledge, which limits the usability a bit, I also ended up rotating the figure so that it's tilted and don't know how to fix it. So nice app overall, needs a decent amount of work though.

Fantastic app for referencing when I'm painting mini's! Would love to see more shapes added in the future for further references, such as half-pipes, basic shapes with sections missing/raised areas (think something textural, bumpy, or full of holes). Keep it up! Will recommend on my YouTube channel when I do a deep dive on certain techniques.

There is not a better made artist assistant app than this. You can bend at every joint! They have heads, animal skulls, feet! You can move the lighting, change colors of the lighting, set shadows! The 3d models are incredibly intricate, and the coding is sublime. You people working on this app, thank you! P.s. a tiny thing that I think might just be with my phone, the opening selection screen is now sideways, it no longer fits along my screen normally, still works perfectly though! Oneplus6

EDIT: Fixed all my issues, 100% recommend to everyone! --- Original review: Great, but I do have a huge pet peeve. This is an incredibly useful app because you have a 2nd screen (your phone or tablet) told hold your own poseable hands, feet, and heads! Lots of presets, and a way to pose fingers and toes, and have it bend realistically or far passed it. One major issue I have that can really make posing fingers SUPER frustrating is that the controls disappear after a second if you're not constantly adjusting them. The only way to bring it back is tapping on the joint you were working on, but if you're at an angle where there are several joints on top of each other, you can easily tap other joints or fingers by accident and have to rotate the camera until you can see it and move the camera back to how you had it. I still REALLY love this app, but I am really wishing for an update that either has an option to easily select joints (like a mini-map kinda thing in a bottom corner that shows up when you tap the screen), or have the controls for the joint you're currently editing come back up too when you tap the screen.

Pretty good app! I appreciate the detailed skin texture, tendons, and veins in the hands, and the variety of head types are nice. There are things I wished were better though. The interface and controls can be a bit confusing, especially with relation to moving items and light sources. It could really use with an undo button as well. I would also appreciate more pose presets and props, especially smaller handheld props like cups, pens, and cigarettes.

I really don't know why people say this is a great app. It has no "free" things to make it worthwhile. It doesn't change skin tone even tho I change the setting. It doesn't "bend at all the joints" like one reviewer said and honestly it's the same tired boring poses and references that most free apps have. Save your money and buy poseit or the proko app. You'll get more for your hard earned dollar. If I could return this app I certainly would. Very very disappointing.

I don't usually write reviews, but Handy absolutely earned it. With brand new (free!) features being added such as subsurface scattering, new high-resolution models, and ability to load multiple models in a scene, they've established themselves as one of my essential tools for digital art. I recommend it to anyone who is starting out drawing or rendering and needs that solid anatomical/lighting foundation. Can't wait to see what features they will come out with in the future!

I like the app. It has basic objects to use. A female skull should be included if there is a male skull. I like the basic 3D shapes. I rotate them to practice perspective. The fact I had to buy the app, but also have to buy the foot models is slightly disappointing but it's called handy so..... But it's not expensive. Just a dollar. Adding Torso's would be nice. Other amazing features like changing lighting & surface types/material and how it effects the models differently is great for learning.
