I was only going to use this app to learn pinyin but it's so fun, I think I might learn a few phrases. I like how they ease you into learning characters starting from pinyin (if you want) or starting from pronunciation and building up from easier words and integrating characters as well. You practice speaking, listening, and a little writing and reading.

Great app perfect for my needs couldn't have asked for anything better Edit: just spent forever working through the new main course without logging into my account, which I had forgotten that I had made. I logged in to my account to purchase premium so I could continue since they lock you out, and they erased everything I had been working on. Infuriating.
Seems a lot better than any app I tried to learn a language with 10 years ago at the very least. Vaguely fun. I wouldn't mind buying pro for a single price, I don't do subscription services. I'm pairing this with watching YouTube videos. I have no idea if I'm actually pronouncing anything correctly but i can understand a little bit now. Overall I like it. Not having the option to outright buy the pro version takes a star off for me.
Very close to the lessons in my daughter's Chinese immersion classes, this app helping us be closer as a family because I can help her with her homework. I like the variety of learning exercises and the writing section in the practice tab- I just wish there was an option so I could practice writing ALL of the characters I've encountered in the lessons in the practice writing section instead of just a select few. It works better than flashcards to help me remember.
If you want to learn Mandarin then this is the best app. You can choose from traditional/simplified characters, practice writing, and they have extra activities to play with outside of lessons, like learning games and short stories both that are geared to where you are in the lesson plan. I also have to give a big shout-out to their support team. I got a new phone and was having difficulty accessing my account and they were able to find and restore everything within a few days. Thanks again!
This made it super easy to learn chinese. I've been on it for a week now and i can type different sentences, but the only thing that i think should be different is having the ability to make an account on here. Because what if i get a new phone and i hadn't upgraded it. I would have lost all my progress and have to re-do it. When you upgrade, you gain access to alot more on the app. But i think its fair for everyone to be able to make their own account without upgrading. Great app though.
(2022) Pretty good and as a beginner it is easy to use. (2024) Now that I have been on the app for a while, I found that once you get to a certain point, it does in fact make you pay to continue on through the lesson. It does provide some free additional learning materials like stories, reading, writing, and listening exercises but when getting into about the third module
Amazing! Totally comprehensive, specialized, and you get so much for free, so you can still learn even if you can't afford a subscription! I love when it uses photos of things to teach you what something means! Though I do wish characters weren't still black on dark mode, as I can't really use it that way, and am trying to learn my characters. I always do a lesson before bed, so dark mode is important for me :)
This app is really good for those who want to start Chinese but don't know how. It teaches vocabulary in small chunks, has native speakers examples, and shows how to write some character. Plus, you can redo the same lesson multiple times for better retention. And tips for those who want to learn Chinese: really understand tones. While tones appear in 1st lesson, if you don't know why they are important you may not pay them attention.
Allows disabling writing exercises, which is fantastic. The content is solid, and the review feature is great. If you have used the free version for a while, Premium is not really worth it though. The premium games' level is not tied to your progress, so you're really just paying $7 to re-learn "cat" and "mother" over and over with no option to skip ahead, and there's a daily level cap to keep you from grinding it, so you don't really learn much.
