Thank you so much for your efforts!! This app is amazing, it helped me so much (and still does)! I will absolutely buy the Japanese Intermediate app. I've always wanted to learn Japanese and this app is a huge help! I absolutely recommend it to anyone learning Japanese. The explanations, exercises, cultural notes- everything is great. I have no complaints.
Reviews for Human Japanese
← Back to Human JapaneseThis really is a very good app for learning Japanese and should definitely be used by anyone wanting to learn Japanese. What sets it apart from Duolingo is that it teaches the "why" of it all as you go, giving context to things like the particles and how to draw the characters, as well as insights into the evolution of the language and Japanese culture. What also sets it apart from Duolingo though is that it doesn't drill you on the things you have learned in each lesson, just a short quiz at the end. The primary area where I found this a problem was in learning the hiragana and katakana characters, those really need to be drilled to stick. Pair it with the first few lessons of Japanese on Duolingo and perhaps a couple of the kana practice apps though and you've got an incredibly well rounded process for learning Japanese. If you try the Lite version and decide to switch, know that your progress doesn't carry over to the new app, so I recommend switching sooner than later.
Don't be fooled by the lack of shiny graphics that has become common place in learning a language on your phone. This app is truly an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn japanese. It isn't just a bunch of random memorisation, but explores the explanations of why things happen in certain sentences. If you have never learnt japanese you may want to use another resource (such as flashcards) to help you learn hiragana along side this app, as it is a very steep learning curve. 10/10!
Worth the money, I find is that the app is drills a bit too much vocabulary before going into some of the verbs... So unless you jump through chapters, you're gonna be limited for a while. Also needs some better kana exercises... Needed another app to assist with kanas drills, but otherwise it is a pretty great app to introduce you to japanese. I love it because it allows you to effectively self-pace that japanese 101 course.
Great app for grammer, basic vocabulary and general background. I really like the option to roam free without having to do the tests. I found it hard to practice what I've learned so far, due to the practice quiz not being able to load when in the 'questions you got wrong' mode. I also found it hard to practice the scripts (I just used some quiz online for that) But again, really liked it as a framework for my learning even if I used other material to complement it
This app is great, especially for those who just started learning Japanese. Although the price is quite expensive ;-;, the experience will play a crucial role in supporting your progress. :)) P/s: I wish the price was a little cheaper so that I wouldn't have any troubles on payment :))
Excellent introduction to Japanese featuring smart, engaging lessons in a writing style that makes learning feel natural while also explaining grammatical nuances in ways that make sense. HJ effectively introduced the Japanese writing system, sentence structure and vocabulary. Personally I wrote notes and vocab from each chapter which helped with retention (at least for me) and made it easier to flip between chapters to review, but for 10 bucks you really can't beat this intro to the language.
An app to really take advantage of and truly appreciate. No one source can give you the full scope of the language or any language. Learning them is a life long commitment. But what this program does do well, is provide a solid foundation with simple explanations, quizzes, etc. I definitely recommend this app. I'm starting the intermediate version and using Satori reader by the same company.. really great programs 😀👍🏾
Absolutely IN LOVE with this app! Have been using it for a while, and I definitely feel like I'm learning. Genuinely starts from the beginning, and goes into explanations that will make Japanese make sense! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that you can't sync progress across devices... I've had to start over SO many times...
I would have paid double for the paid version if they had asked. No other app has taught me as much about the Japanese language as Human Japanese. The lessons are not only easy to understand, the information in them is thorough and much more complete than any other app I've seen. You don't just learn common phrases with this app, you learn the structure and flow of the language so you can build your own thoughts and ideas rather than being limited to the phrases you memorized. So worth it!
In my ongoing attempts to learn Japanese, I have been through many apps and books. This is one of the most outstanding learning tools I've worked with to date. Much of the mystery of WA versus GA is cleared up here and the breakdown of ichidan vs godan verbs is exceptionally well done. I wish I'd known of this app when first starting out! Get this app if you're planning to study Japanese. You won't go wrong.
At first the price tag turned me off. But once I bought it and started using it, I quickly realized that this thing will help me greatly. The explanations are so thorough and they just make sense. The example sentences and chapter quizzes really help to make the grammar and vocab stick. Overall, I am incredibly happy with this app, and recommend it to anyone who is looking for another explanation of grammar points that just haven't seemed to make sense yet!
Great teaching style, I wish it had progress syncing. I used Duolingo for a year before a friend recommended Human Japanese, and the teaching style is miles better than the simple memorization without any explanation. I appreciate that lessons are broken up with different types of info so it doesn't feel like a "grind". I just wish there were a way to sync my progress across devices--that would bump this app up to five stars.
This app is absolutely fantastic and is an easy recommendation to anyone trying to learn Japanese. The lessons are short but jam packed with information and knowledge. You can feel that the author tried very hard to make a product that helped you truly understand and not just memorize phrases. This is one of the best beginners Japanese learning materials out there and is well worth the price. Pick this up, you won't regret it.
It does a great job explaining grammar. By far they do excellent work explaining how Japanese works. I found its tool for memorizing hiragana worthless, which is the only reason I didn't give it five stars. I really wish it would not use a memory game that requires you to spend too much time remembering where cards are. If all the cards were flipped over or one group it would be far more useful.
This is like reading an interactive book, and it's great at explaining how the grammar works. I give it 5-stars only because you can use free user-created Memrise courses to practice the vocabulary. The only other issue is with the Hiragana and Katakana quizzes being "Concentration" style, which is just *too much*, but you don't have to complete those so I won't mark it down. It's definitely worth the $10 on Android!
Hands down one of my favorite and most use app. I love how easy this makes learning Japanese and how they break away after a few lessons and teach you the culture. That little break to me is one of the most fun thing about this. It keeps me interested and looking forward to the next snippet. I highly recommend anyone to give this app a go if you are really interested in learning Japanese. One small downside is that I wish it have more practice session. I use this in conjunction with Genki.
Great method to be introduced to Japanese, I like the way grammar is explained, it makes it less daunting. Quizzes and chapter tests could be much better, this is too easy and doesn't help with practicing writing or audio comprehension, I would prefer more audio tests. Chapter 32 is way to dense (probably because there is no chapter 31?) and discouraging. Counting objects should have been spread across many chapters.
There are a lot of nice things about this app, like the recordings, kana writing explanations and cultural notes. However, it quickly devolves into learning huge lists of vocabulary with very little application. The quizzes are a bit of a joke/after thought, and there are very few exercises for practice. Even though I own both this and intermediate, I don't think they are worth it. Fun if you want to see some Japanese, poor if you want to learn the language.
Human Japanese is amazing. The format is excellent, the lessons are well organized, the quizzes help solidify what the chapters went over and the interface is simply outstanding. My ONLY point of contention is that if you reset or change your phone (which sadly, I have done both six times in one year), you WILL have to start over--bookmarks, notes and all. Of course, it gives me the opportunity to start from the beginning and re-learn things, but it can become slightly frustrating. Try it out!
