I've enjoyed Kickstarter for a long time, but the app is only so-so. Push notifications have never worked, uninstall-reinstall included. It's never felt straightforward to see the status of the projects I've backed or keep track of them. Search also doesn't seem to turn up what I'm looking for at the top of the list, even if I search for the exact name. Given the importance of exposure on the platform, I'm guessing they select result order as a combination of search match and desired hype.
Reviews for Kickstarter
← Back to KickstarterThey don't do anything about bad actors. This is truly back at your own risk. Even when you report to Kickstarter a potential scam, they ignore and never communicate. I won't be using anymore having been burned. Also the app is not always capable of doing everything neeeded. For example, there have been problems with completing surveys and have to log in on a computer to complete.
The app is definitely easier to navigate on a smart device than the website. It would be great for the messaging functionality to be included: it's a pain to message developers. (You have to access the website version of the project, and make sure your phone doesn't route the link back to the KS app. It's doable, but could be much easier.)
Major (at least to me) issue is the lack of a dark mode option for the app. Blinding white background can be a bit bothersome. App doesn't always open when going to Kickstarter links, possibly related to shortened URL ending with .st Activity tracker seems to be non-functional at this point, being frozen about 4 days ago. I have cleared all data, un/reinstalled with same results. Still receiving notifications on phone and via email.
Can't even login. I put in my login info and click the login button and it sits there. Doesn't tell me wrong password. Doesn't show any signs of loading. It does nothing. I uninstalled and reinstalled, still the same issue. My login works fine on the website. And there's no way to report an issue, they just redirect you to an FAQ.
I'm not impressed with the new update. Prior updates gave an approx shipping date for project awards on the app but no longer. If one only has
What is up with your app? I haven't been able to use the search feature for months, if ever. Sucks when y'all advertise on Facebook or other social media. First, those links won't open in the open. Takes me to a web browser regardless of my settings. And when I use the app to Search specific projects, it does nothing. Zilch. Nada. (Galaxy S22 Ultra)
This is one of the more ill-conceived Android apps I've ever used. First, the sign up process is clunky, requiring trips to the website to complete the verification step instead of being done in-app. Second, once I wanted to actually back something, the app punts me out of the payment page to the top level project page when I switch to another app to get my payment information to copy/paste. So I can't even complete that unless I want to type everything out by hand. Ridiculous. Uninstalled.
The app is fine. Nothing flashy, which isn't a bad thing, and for the most part it gets things done. However, often it will have trouble loading the campaigns and I have to back out and go back in multiple times. Also, I haven't received a push notification in idk how long, even though everything's allowed in permissions. If they'd make the app more reliable and fix notifications, I'd give it 5 stars
The video playback is no longer working as of the most recent update 1.14.1 (May 1, 2019) on my device (Samsung Galaxy Note8) I've tried troubleshooting the issue, uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck. Will be waiting for the next update to get the ability to play embedded videos. Until then, 2 stars. Please fix the issue! Otherwise nice app, fairly easy to navigate and use otherwise.
I'd like to like it, but the UI is not that good. It's honestly easier to just use the mobile website. Clicking search doesn't automatically open your keyboard and let you type instead you have to tap it again. There's a lot of extra clicks to view all the data needed in a campaign. A slide left and right would work better than tapping multiple menus.
For the most part it's a great app, especially if you are just browsing. But for purchasing it doesnt show you the full detail and pictures of the item the way the regular website does. So you cant see the different colors or extra parts or accessories that the product might come with depending on what price you want. If that gets fixed....then I would give it 5 stars instead of 4.
Excellent platform. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars from me is that the navigation is sometimes unintuitive. Pressing back should, in my mind, go to where you just were or to the main feed. Instead, it seems mostly to exit the app. I understand that campaign pages use tabs, but having that be the primary mode of getting around is counter to how every other app works, so I can't (and don't want to) stop using the back button.
It looks like a nice interface, but the app is unreliable, often failing to sync and stalling. It offers no substantive advantage over using the website. Instead of just getting email updates that prompt to visit the website, I get the email, and an app alert as well. Tapping on app alerts frequently loads the app, which either stalls, or opens my web browser, which re-opens the app, which re-opens the browser, where I can finally read whatever the message was.
Website is easier to navigate than the app. Cancelling a pledge is a problem though. Says it has to verify your account with Facebook, then apologizes that it can not verify your account with Facebook. You can adjust the pledge, but not cancel it. This has been going on for years! I finally put a temporary debit card up as my primary means of payment and then cancelled the card. That way every pledge fails to charge and I can manually choose to change the payment option if I still want it.
Since the update, I have been running into a number of problems. In one instance, it kept adding a "bonus pledge" onto my pledge. The app is much easier to use than going online, but these glitches mean that you have to go online anyway. Plus, the app needs to be able to sort successful pledges into those that have and those that have not been fulfilled.
While I love Kickstarter and use it a lot, I find the app to be quite unusable. I constantly keep getting notifications that my app is offline, even when it isn't and this notification repeats over and over, preventing me from doing even the most basic thing such as sending messages. On many occasions, the rewards won't load. I am not sure why the app such a substandard performance.
Basically whatever someone dreams up, has a chance to present that product, or idea to the public. Enough backers and it becomes a reality. A chance to get great deals on unique, well made, useful items of all kinds. They take some time to arrive. However, of the items I've backed so far, each has been well worth the journey! Recommend checking it out!
Used to work great. They keep doing unnecessary updates that break things. You used to be able to fix a failed payment method in the app. But now it doesn't give you an option to change the payment method, just to retry the card that failed/doesnt work. Now I have to fix such pledges on the desktop site. This worked in app before they changed it! They also changed how your pledges appear on your profile. They were arranged chronologically, but now they constantly change. Hard to find anything!
For the past few weeks, the app has been buggy to the point of almost being unusable. I always get a red "Something Went Wrong" error when I try to change rewards or manage my pledge. I have cleared my cache, uninstalled/reinstalled, and still nothing. The site seems to be okay but it's just annoying to not be able to use the app.
