Reviews for Language Learning Games: Drops

4/30/25: Topics open after 30 seconds or not at all. 3/1/25: The app is broken again. This time it shows that I have an 812 day streak but all of my progress is gone. It wants me to start from 0 words learned. 1/26/25: The app is unusable after latest update. :-( 1) When I open the app, it says I have a 23 day streak even though I'm on day 777. 2) After a couple of seconds it shows my actual 777 day streak and immediately freezes. I can swipe up/down/left/right but none of the buttons work.

Drops has been amazing because it has shown vocab and short sentences with illustrations and in target language quality audio and text only. Unique, so I purchased a lifetime subscription. However--they have recently been downgrading the experience in a few ways. 1) Added "mic" support. 2) Removed ability to remove English translation (at least for Esperanto.) 3) Introducing explicit grammar instruction (and using English translation.) Drops is unfortunately regressing. Not pleased. :'(

some bits I absolutely love!! despite flaws, still enjoying it. there are I've started both Indonesian and Japanese. unfortunately for Japanese, there are numerous "beginner topics" that are called "hiragana combinations", with a description saying it's about hiragana combinations, but the vocabulary list is almost all kanji! I've explored other "topics", and they seem very disorganized and not beginners friendly. plus, unless you pay for it, the pictures for the questions don't load well.

Rating 1 star because the matching exercises are the dominant review exercise despite them being totally unhelpful. They show pictures that are too small to decipher, you can't click them for a textual cue like the other exercises, and they don't show the correct answer afterward. They also continue to make me review skipped phrases. Plus, a recent update broke the UI. On Android 10, the display doesn't adapt to the menu bar at the bottom, so buttons and icons are covered up by the bar.

Fun, no doubt. But, oversimplified a bit too much. Matching words to oversimplified 2D images. Often, the images don't even make sense intuitively. When I go back and review I can often recall the words and the meanings, but the images don't make sense. I have to associate a new set of symbols (the images) along with new words and grammar usage from the new language. It would be better with photos of real life, or at least AI images.

I got this for Icelandic. it started out pretty well and reasonable, but very quickly jumped to phrases and sentences that were far to complex. These were to long and fast for the app to even complete before the next part.

I love using this app, but it has been so buggy lately. My sessions get interrupted with a message telling me I've mastered a topic when there are still words I haven’t seen. And then the moment I have seen all of the words, it gives me a 100%. You used to have to do more practice after seeing all of the words before you got to that 100.

This app does not do any grammar, but I never expected it to, just be aware. I use it in conjunction with other apps that do teach grammar! I don't remember what the free version includes, as I paid for the lifetime premium a long time ago. I just don't like all the exercises and wish I could turn off certain ones. I like that I can target certain vocab categories, unlike other apps. There are certain things I need to know for work and with other apps, it's waaaay down the learning path.

I've been using the app for 4 years on premium and overall I like it, it was worth the one-time premium payment. But would it be too much to ask that native speakers review the material? There are errors that are so obvious that they can only have been made by somebody who doesn't know any of the language. For Hebrew, ok, not that many native speakers in the US. But Spanish? There are more errors in the Spanish than the Hebrew. You couldn't find a Spanish speaker? edit: please add verb tenses!

if you're looking for language flashcards, this is an excellent app for that. it limits you to 5min practice per day unless you pay, which can be annoying, but I find that even just 5min is extremely helpful for learning a new language. Also, this is one of the few language learning apps that actually teaches tagalog (a rarity!) AND non-western scripts. it's companion app (scripts) focusses on teaching you how to write in other languages which is AMAZING and a much needed aspect of languages
