Reviews for Language Learning Games: Drops

4/30/25: Topics open after 30 seconds or not at all. 3/1/25: The app is broken again. This time it shows that I have an 812 day streak but all of my progress is gone. It wants me to start from 0 words learned. 1/26/25: The app is unusable after latest update. :-( 1) When I open the app, it says I have a 23 day streak even though I'm on day 777. 2) After a couple of seconds it shows my actual 777 day streak and immediately freezes. I can swipe up/down/left/right but none of the buttons work.

Drops has been amazing because it has shown vocab and short sentences with illustrations and in target language quality audio and text only. Unique, so I purchased a lifetime subscription. However--they have recently been downgrading the experience in a few ways. 1) Added "mic" support. 2) Removed ability to remove English translation (at least for Esperanto.) 3) Introducing explicit grammar instruction (and using English translation.) Drops is unfortunately regressing. Not pleased. :'(

some bits I absolutely love!! despite flaws, still enjoying it. there are I've started both Indonesian and Japanese. unfortunately for Japanese, there are numerous "beginner topics" that are called "hiragana combinations", with a description saying it's about hiragana combinations, but the vocabulary list is almost all kanji! I've explored other "topics", and they seem very disorganized and not beginners friendly. plus, unless you pay for it, the pictures for the questions don't load well.

Rating 1 star because the matching exercises are the dominant review exercise despite them being totally unhelpful. They show pictures that are too small to decipher, you can't click them for a textual cue like the other exercises, and they don't show the correct answer afterward. They also continue to make me review skipped phrases. Plus, a recent update broke the UI. On Android 10, the display doesn't adapt to the menu bar at the bottom, so buttons and icons are covered up by the bar.

Fun, no doubt. But, oversimplified a bit too much. Matching words to oversimplified 2D images. Often, the images don't even make sense intuitively. When I go back and review I can often recall the words and the meanings, but the images don't make sense. I have to associate a new set of symbols (the images) along with new words and grammar usage from the new language. It would be better with photos of real life, or at least AI images.

I got this for Icelandic. it started out pretty well and reasonable, but very quickly jumped to phrases and sentences that were far to complex. These were to long and fast for the app to even complete before the next part.

I love using this app, but it has been so buggy lately. My sessions get interrupted with a message telling me I've mastered a topic when there are still words I haven’t seen. And then the moment I have seen all of the words, it gives me a 100%. You used to have to do more practice after seeing all of the words before you got to that 100.

This app does not do any grammar, but I never expected it to, just be aware. I use it in conjunction with other apps that do teach grammar! I don't remember what the free version includes, as I paid for the lifetime premium a long time ago. I just don't like all the exercises and wish I could turn off certain ones. I like that I can target certain vocab categories, unlike other apps. There are certain things I need to know for work and with other apps, it's waaaay down the learning path.

I've been using the app for 4 years on premium and overall I like it, it was worth the one-time premium payment. But would it be too much to ask that native speakers review the material? There are errors that are so obvious that they can only have been made by somebody who doesn't know any of the language. For Hebrew, ok, not that many native speakers in the US. But Spanish? There are more errors in the Spanish than the Hebrew. You couldn't find a Spanish speaker? edit: please add verb tenses!

if you're looking for language flashcards, this is an excellent app for that. it limits you to 5min practice per day unless you pay, which can be annoying, but I find that even just 5min is extremely helpful for learning a new language. Also, this is one of the few language learning apps that actually teaches tagalog (a rarity!) AND non-western scripts. it's companion app (scripts) focusses on teaching you how to write in other languages which is AMAZING and a much needed aspect of languages

At the beginning of the year, I would have rated this app 5 stars. Over time, I have noticed a decline in quality and app function, likely in part to AI integration. The biggest red flag is that the AI-generated "facts" often don't match the translations taught within the app's lessons. Some of the vocabulary illustrations are also clearly AI-generated as the art style is jarringly different. I've also started to notice the app crashing or the timer glitching during sessions.

This is my all time FAVORITE language learning app. I've used it daily for 11 months so far! Thanks to Drops I've made great daily progress with Portuguese. I used to use DuoLingo, for French. It was stressful. More pressure. DuoLingo doesn't offer European Portuguese, but if it did, I'd use Drops instead. I've tried a few other apps to learn European Portuguese, and they have their strengths, but I don't want to return to them daily like I do with Drops.

Much more sluggish than usual (it has always been slightly janky) ever since they've tried to add the multiplayer feature. Please...take it out until you work out the network/sync issues so those of us not at all interested in it can use the app as we always have. Right now it is almost unusable. Downgrade from 3 stars to 2 because in the past 3 months it has become even less responsive. And now down to 1 star. Another 4 months and it is so sluggish it unusable.

Fairly frequent errors which take months to correct - often errors that make me think an automatic translator not a human was involved (such as those that invovle distinctions that are present in the other language but not in English), but also some stupid ones like having a picture of someone giving a manicure as "holding hands". Edit: newest change where one typo causes reset (and show the correct answer for only a split second) makes it even harder to learn. Uninstalling after years.

Lately the app refuses to stop giving me listening exercises even when my volume is turned completely down. It tells me I can't do listening exercises until I turn the volume up, but when I go back into the lesson, it immediately gives me matching options that have listening rather than written words. Not helpful when I have to guess at things because I can't turn the volume up at the moment.

I really like this app for learning language vocabulary. It's so much easier for me to learn vocabulary using the simple images than it is to learn it from sentences, or even more complex images like pictures. Overall, this is a great little app, I bought the premium for life version not long after I began using it, because I knew I would be a long term user.

app is currently broken. i have been tracking my progress thru my google account for years. for the past week, i have only been able to get through a couple words before the app gives me a pop up telling me to pick which email to use to save my progress. i pick my email that the progress has already been saved to. then 2-3 words later, it pops up again. update-whole app is broken now. nothing loads, everything freezes. works on my apple device though. maybe it's just a Google problem.

I enjoy learning new languages with this app, and the unlimited languages for $140 is a great deal, but honestly, the method of teaching it uses does not work for me. I will slowly gain a vocabulary, but having iffy single color pictures that could represent one of a million words or phrases, and then guessing at the words from there is just lacking as a method of learning. then when you do guess, it doesn't give you enough time to review the correct response before going on to the next word.

I'm a lifetime member. This app makes vocabulary learning addicting. It cultivates to how memorization works and you can learn brainlessly for five minutes everyday. I wish they'd include verbs, I've only been seeing and learning nouns. Some words and phrases are probably autogenerated and wrong, like, nobody would speak that way. I wish there was a way to report those.

I'm using this for German, and eventually bought the premium version. It is a great companion learning tool to a class/app where you would learn grammer. This app is focused exclusively on vocab and does the job well. I installed the app because I was moving to Austria. Now that I'm here, I have found that the words I learned from Drops are useful for navigating stores and menus, navigating the city, more quickly understanding conversations, etc. I highly recommend this app.
