Reviews for LeafSnap Plant Identification

The app does a good job at identifying potential plants from just a photo. Some of the plants do not have much info attached to them at this point. I am hoping the site will continue to broaden its data base of plants. Yes, the ads can be annoying, but so are TV commercials...I'm not in that big of a hurry that I can't wait a fee extra seconds.

Useful information . . . in between the barrage of ads! The app appears to work by using Google's photo matching search to select several possible candidate matches to your plant photo. It does NOT actually identify anything; it just makes it easier for you to do so. Once you pick a likely match from the ones offered, it then offers nicely reformatted information from other sources, mostly Wikipedia. So, fundamentally, it is really a plant identification ASSISTANT app, rather than a plant ID app. But because it only helps you get close, you are still going to have to do a fair bit of work to achieve a definite ID. As a result, it's probably more useful to someone who already has a fair bit of knowledge (I was a Scoutmaster) than someone who really has no clue. But . . . the ADS! They are endless, noisy (turn your sound off, BEFORE using the app), and obtrusive. And . . . they are interstitial ads, that act as a gateway each time you move from one element in the program to another: you CAN NOT simply ignore them! So . . . I would recommend not even bothering with this program, if you plan to use it much UNLESS you are willing to pony up the $'s for an ad-free version. ($2?) Essentially, the 'free' version is really a TRIAL version, but is not actually usable unless you have a higher tolerance for ads than I do. Me? I'm going to try all the other plant apps first, and only come back to this one if I can find nothing better.

Pretty good app. I realize the developers need to get paid but I'm having a hard time getting past the persistent and very annoying ads. Every single time you select an option you need to wit and then cancel an add. Most apps it will only be the first click in a catagory, not every single time you touch your screen! Normally I would have paid for the ad free version by now but honestly I'm not sure I trust it would actually be ad free!

I pay for the premium version so I don't have to watch the annoying ads. But every time I open the app or try to move around in the app (look up a new plant, etc.) the app conveniently forgets that I pay and makes me watch the ads anyway. I have to go through the process of clicking the upgrade button and clicking restore every single time. Beginning to think the paid version is a scam.

Edit: Since the update the app has kinda sucked. Its so difficult to change things for reminders. If I wanted to change the start date for say the water reminders, I can't chose a date before or after the actual day I'm trying to do it. You have to choose the current date or it wont let you save. I liked having my plants in a grid instead of a list so I could see more of them. It also added plants that I didn't add, but just took a pic of to identify.

To test the app, I took a picture of a plant I already knew, and it turned up a bunch of plants that were definitely wrong (how do you confuse a spider plant with an Easter lily?). I tried with a few plants and a few pictures from different angles but it didn't seem to help. I definitely don't trust this app to help me identify plants - it gives too many options and not even correct ones!

Delivered on its promise!! It's great to be able to use different parts of the tree/ plant to take photos for the identification. It'll give a list of possible ID's, and it typically nails it on the 1st one (good % of accuracy) . It'll keep a file/ journal of the plants/ trees I've ID'd. Great for use while collecting material for Bonsai! (Useful tool) This app delivered on its promise!!

Not the best app. It worked and immediately told you plant descriptions. But they were odd and not quite matching, lots of options but not quite. Be careful and pay attention because there are a lot of inaccuracies. I just wanted to remember the name of the plant and none of the options were there. Just a part so I could think of it. But many odd alternatives. Just watch. Seems good IF you know about plants to begin with. If NOT then find another source. Good luck!

Simple layout, easy to use. I got 5 house plants from my sister & neither of us knew what kind they were. DL'd this to identify them. A lot of good info is provided & is very helpful, esp if you're a black thumb! I'd love to have a way to save said info to my plant profile & keep all of the things I need to know about each plant together in one place. Looking up each one again with photos isn't near as useful. You can add notes, I guess you can copy & paste it there if you need it. I know I do!

At first I really liked how simple yhe app was but the more I used it, the more I saw how inaccurate AND contradictory the "Read More" information sections were, as well as the classifications. I'm glad I caught on early on because I was relying on it to keep track of how to take care of my different plants. I Uninstalled the app a few weeks after I downloaded it.

Was able to identify all my weird succulents and other more common plants. Just take a picture of your plant (my pictures weren't even in the best lighting). Then the app will give you a list of possibilities and you can compare your plant to several pictures. My plants were the first option they gave 90% of the time. Very accurate and easy to use!

So far it's great! Not a lot of annoying ads and does exactly what it's supposed. Love the My Plants section so u can keep track of what u are growing. Thought about upgrading to remove ads but it's a monthly price and not a one time feel. Also it would be great if we could change the picture at the top of the my plants section to actually show a group photo of our plants instead of the stock picture.

I tried it out, but there are too many ads and I'm not paying a subscription. I don't mind buying an app, not one bit...especially if it's one that works; however, it got my Jalapeño plant wrong. Furthermore, I got hit with four ads each just trying to identify my Tiger Lily and Easter Lily. I'm uninstalling, but if it drops the ads and subscription and works better, I'll reinstall.

Too many ads. When you upload a picture, they pop up shortly after identifying the plant. It's difficult to exit out of them. Shame, because it seemed to be identifying the plants accurately. Not worth it though, as there are other apps that will do the same thing without inundating you with ads. Also, you will have to download Adobe Express.

I've used this app for years, only for the identification feature. It's consistently accurate and ALWAYS better than Google Lens! I've learned so much with this app. Thank you to the developers! Minus star is for the ads. They are a bit obtrusive. The app needs ads to keep being free, and I appreciate being able to use this app for free. If there's a way to minimize the ads while still making money off of them, that would be ideal. However, I still love this app and use it very often.

The latest version has 3 serious errors. 1. The search feature does not work. Whether you enter an English or Latin name, you get a list of what appears to be every plant in the database. 2. When entering a name, you have to type very slowly; otherwise, letters that you type are just ignored. 3. When attempting to edit a mistyped word, the corrections are appended to the end of the word rather than the position that you requested. >>>>the search is still broken ( or broken again ).

too much advertising. my weather app was $5.99 for no ads. Nothing further owed. people would be more apt to purchase the no ad version if it was just a one-time charge. some advertising marketing person made a lousy suggestion of trying to make money by paying for stuff by subscription. I no longer have word or any kind of other subscription continuously charges you outrageous amounts just to use the product.

In terms of doing what it says, I'd say it's pretty good. I've had reasonable accuracy, I like the side-by-side comparisons, I like the amount of information given, it's pretty easy to use, and explicitly supporting fungi is pretty cool too. However, the intrusiveness of the ads and the frequent requests to pay for the app have made it too slow and frustrating to use. I don't use this often enough to justify paying for it. I swapped to a not-so-naggy free app that's at least as accurate.

I love this app for identifying things growing in my yard, whether I've planted them and forgotten them, just forgotten the name, can't tell a weed from what I'm growing, or really do have things just popping up of their own accord. I sometimes use it just to read up on the needs of things I'm planning to plant, too, and it seems to steer me in the right direction. I don't have much of a green thumb, but I'm happy with chaotic garden beds and this makes a good companion.

I have used this app for years. It's accuracy is usually right on point and I appreciate it gives you a few options of plants it could be to help you make an educated guess. The main drawback is that there are so many ads and prompts to pay, I am now searching for an alternative app. The time it takes to wait for the ads to run and get through all the prompts is just too inconvenient.
