Reviews for Letterboxd

← Back to Letterboxd

I like using this app to log movies that I have seen, and also write reviews. However, I could not use this app without having to use DuckDuckGo's App Tracking Protection to not only prevent trackers (in which there are thousands of attempts to try to track me, which is highly unacceptable), but also prevent ads from suddenly opening up another browser. And no, Letterboxd, it's not on the user's end. Please fix this app so it isn't so intrusive.

Their Lists feature is nice, but needs a major overhaul. The biggest problem is that new entries to lists does not save half the time. They literally have a Discard button if you try to back out, but no "Save" button, just checkmarks that don't work half the time. Very frustrating adding 400 movies to a list to have it not save after hitting the checkmark. Just make a damn Save button and have it actually SAVE. Jesus Saves. Be like Jesus. Save.

so the app was great at first until one day I got randomly signed out and now have been completely unable to sign in on my phone. Even when using a web browsing app, it refuses to accept that my info is correct even though it is. I have changed my pw so many times and it never matters. I guess I can still just use the website on my laptop but it's certainly a lot less convenient and also very annoying. I've looked into it too, and not only does this happen to A LOT of other people, plus no help

number one issue with this update for me is the design of the instagram story sticker for when I'm sharing. the stars are too small now and the bounding box for the text is way too wide so long movie titles go too far out on either side. the app is overall better designed and functions better than before but I do miss the highlighted reviews on the movie page.

Edit: The new interface takes a lot of getting used to, but the big downgrade is that the green plus button is just another search button. So instead of being able to instantly add a review from the film's page, the green plus instead makes me search for the film I'm already looking at. Old review: I've learned to love this app but now it has actual pop-ups. I don't mean the ads. I mean a real-life webpage automatically popping up once the ad loads like it's 1998.

I'm not mad, just disappointed. Love the idea of letterboxd but this app needs a LOT of work. Nothing is intuitive, the menus make no sense, good luck trying to find your friends and sometimes the ads just make it unusable - not as in "I hate ads" but in a "the ad isn't loading and making the app literally unusable". It's 2025 guys, AI can make a better app than this.

Since the 3.0 update: filters do not work consistently, the 'back' button does not work consistently, poster icons are so small that it can make the titles difficult to read, the vertical cast list causes tedious scrolling to get to the related/similar films sections, load times are longer. Overall, a big disappointment for a once well functioning app.

look, I love letterboxd..pay for premium, etc. this latest update has made me want to uninstall. not saving spot in list, search button seems to be in a weird spot, also I keep hitting the "+" to add activity for a movie... but no you have to go into the menu for that?? also not being able to see reviews on the homepage for movies is like... a huge part of what I used the app for. please change it back 😫

I love letterboxd, I pay for patron and use it all the time. However, ever since the new update there have been so many bugs that I honestly just can't use it as much. The filters on lists no longer work, the giant navigation bar takes up so much unnecessary space, and everything is smaller/on the opposite side of the screen. Like I said, I'm a loyal fan of letterboxd, but ever since the new update it has simply not been enjoyable.

Not a fan of the most recent ux overhaul. The ever-present nav bar and oversized banner feel like a huge waste of screen real estate. I see the intent with the new movie pages, but I'm seeing less of the information I care about on viewing. Bring back top reviews and the cast/crew carousels. I can't prove that this is due to the update, but I have also been seeing a lot of 'Error loading film - unexpected response' errors, which I haven't seen in the years I've been paying for this app.

New 3.0.6 UI "update" is terrible. Everything is harder to find/use and looks worse. Pages take longer to load. Clicking on a film from a list and then returning to the list starts you back at the top of the list every time. You can't start searches while in the middle of a search and then return to where you were in your previous search anymore (a feature you could do with the side bar previously). Changing the sort order of a list automatically defaults it to "Remember for this list". Unusable

So there's now a big navigation bar that sits at the bottom of every page, which sits above my phone's navigation bar. It's a lot of wasted space for stuff that was previously hidden in a swipe menu on the side. Not to mention the wasted space of the black bar with the title of the page in a massive font at the top. Posters are now smaller and have more space between them, reducing the information on each page. All in all, harder to read and harder to navigate, a pretty massive downgrade.

I loved this app. 5* had zero issues with it. I want to scroll and get the top reviews, why would I want a 50 person long cast list? Side scrolling that was fine. "Reviews have moved" no they haven't, they were always there, you've just removed the top ones, which was often all I wanted. Flicking the left hand side of my phone doesn't go back anymore. Why on earth would you take that away... Edit: buggy as hell, can't access a movie from your diary "unexpected response".

poorly optimized. often lags or shuts down if I rate more than a few movies at once (I'm currently going through a backlog of movies I'd seen but hadn't rated). worst of all, it's nearly impossible to remove a movie once you've reviewed it since there's no "delete" button on here that I can find. i added one by accident and it tells me I can't remove it from "watched" because "there's activity on it". (I tried removing the stars first and it won't let me still.)

Used to be one of the best apps out there and now is pretty much unusable on an android device, you can barely finish writing a review without it crashing and I can't count the number of error messages I've had whilst trying to look up a film in the last week alone. The changes to the UI make little sense and have ended up worsening the user experience and just making the overall appearance far clunkier. If it ain't broke, don't fix it - and the original app was far from broke.

I got this app because friends and my husband told me too and I do really like it. However they recently changed their layout to where it *doesn't show the review first* which defeats the entire purpose of why we all got on this platform in the first place. I had minor complaints here and there but that layout change has really messed me up with this. Like, respectfully, I got this to look at reviews. If I wanted to view the cast list first or news first, I would just go to IMDb.

Ever since the most recent update this app has become nearly impossible to use. It's extremely confusing how to log, rate, or add a film to a list. It used to be extremely easy and required minimal clicks, now it takes a PhD and at least 10 clicks to achieve the same goal. The first time you use the app after the update it is also a little confusing how to search for a film, and it doesn't help that the app is much slower than before as well. What a shame. I'd give this 0 stars if I could.

The app was great, but the new UI is absolutely terrible. Reviews and ratings from people you follow are no longer quickly visible, system back arrow no longer works and you have to use the in app arrow, which is conveniently at the opposite edge of the phone screen, the search is janky and doesn't work half the time, when the search does miraculously work the film won't load when you click on it, ect. I really wish I knew why every single company was in a race to make the absolute worst UI.

The newest update has rendered the app physically unusable. The quick-log search doesn't work. The list search doesn't work. It's wildly difficult to find any features. As a patron, you also cannot change backdrops using the app!!! I used this app for 4+ hours a day for months until the update, and have hardly opened it since. My patron subscription is set to renew next week, and I will not be doing that until they fix this app.

I can't hardly remember the times when I was waiting for this app before it was available - I love it! Something I was really hoping would have been included, though, is the ability to update your profile. I mostly use my phone to go on Letterboxd and the site (even in desktop mode) is already finicky about editing, so having that option in the app would make this a 5-star rating.
