Reviews for LibriVox Audio Books Supporter
← Back to LibriVox Audio Books SupporterThis is such a fantastic app, it's well worth paying the few quid to get the ad free version. I have been using this app to help me fall asleep for about 8 years now. There is a fabulous variety of books, and a wealth of different readers. You can even read a book yourself, should you so desire. As long as it's public domain, Librivox has it. Just wonderful. I wouldn't be without it
Great app with tonnes of books to choose from. Well-designed catalogue & easy to use. Three wishes; I'd like to see the favourites & downloads folders transfer between devices, I'd like to choose how to sort my favourites (by author, by title, by hand...), & I'd like to have a list of titles I want to listen to in future (I'd trade the favourites folder for that).
Excellent app, does exactly what the description says. Good range of books to listen to, read by many different people. Many thanks to you all for finding the time ( without being paid ) to read these books. Sometimes, I realize it can be hard to identify with a reader but that is to be expected. Remember if you are not happy then why do YOU not volunteer and do better? The ability to download a book helps solve poor internet connections and is much appreciated. Cheers, - Rob.
Mostly good. Some of the readings can be a bit hit and miss. The audio quality and listenability of the Librivox reader can be highly variable. I use this so as to listen to translations of classical Latin works, and some of these recordings are very poor indeed. However, the foregoing issues could be largely fixed if more people volunteered to do alternate readings. Also, this site uses mp3 exclusively instead of a more modern lossless format like mp4A.
LibriVox Audio Books *Supporter* is the only one of the two versions of this app that supports Google Cast correctly for me. Most of functionality is pretty intuitive to use, but the playback options are definitely primitive, and the default screen doesn't reliability reflect what you last played, perhaps because the app doesn't request any permissions. LibriVox, as a service in general, is wonderful. Volunteer readers will always be hit and miss, but it's better than nothing.
This type of application is exactly what humanity needs right now. I think with more investment into the library and a few updates, and the application will be in a field of its own. Tip to new listeners: find a narrator you like first, and then every story becomes more interesting than if read by a voice you don't recognize.
I have to say for the most part I really enjoy the app. My only real problem with this app is more often than not when it reaches the end of the chapter playback will stop and I'll have to take out my phone or tablet and press play. It gets extremely annoying at work when my hands are dirty or I'm just busy working. Other than that there is a great selection of free books and many many more to purchase.
App stops playing randomly, have to keep closing the app and reopening to continue listening to an audio book, but half the time the place is lost and I have to skip ahead to find where I was then 5 minutes later it stops and does it all over again. The ad version never did this, wish I never bought the paid version.
Everything I wanted. I love having the classics at my figure tips in an easy to digest (and free) audio format. This app works great and I haven't had any issues with it. (Edit 2022) Even after 5 years, I still love this app and service. It has been my steadfast companion on my trips to work. I really can't express in 500 characters how great it is to have classics in literature, theology and more in such a easy format. Even with regular updates I've never experienced a disruption or issue.
It's pretty good. Two things could be improved: 1. App frequently resets to the beginning of the chapter. 2. I wish there was a way to change the speed of the playback. One main reason I purchased the app was hoping it would have speed adjustment feature. Volunteers have great variation in their reading speed & some are excruciatingly slow! Also Everytime I get a text message, when it resumes the playback pauses every few seconds until I press play on the app again. So annoying!
The good news is it downloads and plays public domain audiobooks and supports Android Auto. The bad news is the app is not good. You can't skip forward or backward in AA (just skip chapters), the app occasionally pauses itself between chapters and after notification ducking, and the main page and audiobook browsing is barely functional. There are some fantasticly read classic works of literature, though they're mixed in with versions that are truly not listenable. READ REVIEWS.
I've had this app for a long time. Years. The support feature is useless, and books no longer play. They go about 2 minutes and reset the the beginning. This happens while steaming over WiFi or when downloaded. I don't have anything that would interfere with playback and have even given Librovox full background running permissions.
Too bad the paid version isn't an improvement over the free one. The most annoying problem is that it stops at EVERY chapter! So if you're listening to something with a hundred chapters, that are just a few minutes long, you spend all your time waking up your phone ... opening the app ... and hitting the play button ... which is insane. The book I'm trying to listen to is 17 hours long! Fix it please!
As a janitor, I need something to listen to while I work at night. One evening while watching a YouTube video by Odd1sout, there was a reference to this app. Considering that there's a lot of classic literature I want to get exposed to, I decided to purchase the ad-free version. So far, I've no complaints. And I've enjoyed the books I've listened to. Classics are free to listen to in this app, but other more recent works do require payment, as too be expected. However, with an extensive classic catalog, there's a lot of free material to listen to.
The content available is well worth the awkwardness of this app. I wish they could add some features most podcast apps have. You have to manually delete episodes after listening, and they are not marked 'played'. Having the reviews listed before your downloaded episodes is annoying. Having complained about that, the amount of books and radio shows available is amazing. Hope they can improve the app interface. Thanks for the work you've done on all the readings.
Had nothing but problems since paying for this version rather than just using the ad-supported one. It's constantly freezing and crashing to the point of having to go into my phones settings and force the app to stop just to get it to play any audio. I love the concept, but the execution is not cutting it. Been using it a few days now... Well, trying to. I spend more time fighting with the app than I do actually listening to books.
Honestly a great app and good service. Lots of free and paid audiobook options and good quality recordings. I listen to a lot of audiobooks at work to help me focus or learn languages. Only flaws are the limited search parameters (mostly just keyword search) and that if I'm listening to multiple chapters of the same audiobook in a row, I might have to back out of the app to continue playing.
Excellent app. You get so much stuff, there's radio plays, audio dramas, nonfiction, religion, classics, pulp fiction, just everything for basically every genre. Yes, some readers are not great but 1) it's free and 2) usually there are more than one recordings of the same book with a different reader, so if you don't like one, you'll probably find another one that you do. I have not had an issue with the sleep timer like other reviews have reported. I start my book and it keeps going all night.
I paid for this app twice. You can buy it as an in-app purchase on the ad-supported version, but it doesn't add to your family library. This one on Google Play does. Although annoyed, I think it was worth it to support this free audiobook community. You can find great classic titles that are often overlooked by pro readers because they won't appeal to the masses. Check out for example great performances of Orlando Furioso and Clausewitz's On War.
