This app is so great! It's the perfect balance of guidance and self-teaching. I can go over things as much as I need, until I understand the unit. This app breaks everything down in a simple way that's not too childish. I've tried to learn Korean for years now, this is without a doubt the BEST app/tool I've found. Update: I stopped practicing for a little, but with some review, I picked up from where I left. It's just as easy as before. I just wish there was more writing practice.
Reviews for LingoDeer - Learn Languages
← Back to LingoDeer - Learn LanguagesPersonally, this is my go-to app for a quick lesson in Korean. I believe it is x10 better than Duolingo! However, although it gives you an option to hear the word slower, I wish they would break the word down even more. Yes, it gives you the romanized way under the way it's supposed to be written, but as a slow learner I'd like to have the word broken down consonant by consonant and so forth. Other than that, I enjoy this app!
I'm conflicted on this. I feel like a beginner (in Japanese) would feel like they got thrown in the deep end, & close to nothing is explained fully, if it all. Going through it initially, the only reason it was ok for me was because I've already done duolingo & got used to it, I still struggled with spelling out long words though. As an intermediate review course, this is great so far. But I wish there was a "no sound" lesson option since I can't usually listen to it. My textbooks are better.
Update: this was a great platform to learn korean, but then it updated with a very early pay wall. I think users should get to try more lessons before deciding if it is worth it. If you want to purchase it, this app stimulates visual and auditory learning centers. it not only teaches you vocab, but also sentence structure, writing, and alphabet. it also has extended notes in each section for a more thorough understanding.
it's a great, taught me alot and made me motivated to learn. my only issue with this app is that I had used it for so long and at the time I downloaded it, all courses were free, only certain features were for payment. but I redownloaed it, logged in, and mid way through a course, EVERYTHING had to be paid to access except the first level or the first course. it really disappointed me and demotivated from learning altogether. I'm not saying make it free. just give your loyal users something.
My favourite app for learning Korean. Vastly better than Duolingo. I like the recent UI changes, apart from the ability to save your streak by paying money. That seems to go against the ethos of learning a language. Overall though Lingodeer has helped me improve my understanding of Korean vocab and grammar.
I like that there is more order to advancing than with duolingo. I know they state that when learning a new language, one should start with more advanced words instead of the basic, but for some learners, starting with the basics is better, and this app provides that opportunity. Adding a section to learn words before creating sentences would also be beneficial.
I have started using this app after Duolingo switched to an AI-first learning approach, and I have no complaints with it so far! it will take me some time to get used to the different user interface as I'm so used to Duolingo, but it's not all that difficult honestly! I was also extremely happy to see that you are able to make a one-time payment to permanently access Deerplus which is awesome, as I prefer to pay once for something than have to endlessly subscribe to it. And it goes on sale!
I've just started using this. It fills all the gaps I didn't like about trying to use duolingo for Japanese learning. I absolutely love it and bought it as soon as I burned through the free resources. The feedback on audio is especially helpful and the additional practice section, too! I do think Kana lessons are lacking in repetition and support for a beginner entry level into Japanese. I would recommend they add user submitted mnemonic aids as a method for teaching Kana and Kanji.
Great app, but little by little they're pay locking features that were PREVIOUSLY FREE FOR YEARS. Don't know why Tips/knowledge-cards section on each lesson is consider "Premium" when it's static content that gives an introductory overview on the lesson you're about to learn. It's like giving you a math problem without teaching you how to solve it. Lssons are now unlocked which is a plus. "Review - Practice" is premium feature now but at least we have SRS review on any lesson which is good.
The course content is really good and I have learned a lot from this app. However, it is really frustrating that there is some bug with tracking streaks. Half the time I finish a lesson, and it shows the animation saying my streak was extended, but when I go to look at my streak calendar, it doesn't show up. Today I even saw the flame on the calendar for today, and then the flame just disappeared in front of my eyes and got replaced with the streak shield instead. Why would it disappear?!
The free 7 day trail isn't free. They splash it all over the app and I liked the little bit of access I had so I wanted to try the premium version but what isn't immediately clear it's the free trial is only if you sign up for the annual subscription, not monthly. I reached out asking why my card was charged and they said the monthly subscription (which is more expensive in the long term) isn't available for free trial. Seems short sighted.
the app is free, but makes you pay for the rest of the lessons and every other useful feature after the FIRST short section. Under someone elses review the devs said if you do the alphabet section and finish it all then you can "progress to the rest of the lessons for free" but thats NOT TRUE. The free trial version is not worth it at all to learn the app and see if it's worth it to buy. You promote the app as a free to download app then put everything useful behind a paywall. Not okay.
I really like this app best for aesthetic reasons. I was all set to plop for the full version so I could download lessons, then I found out you can't unlock (or download) a section until you're done with the one previous... EDIT - yes you can, only you have to drill down in the settings to find where to download the whole thing. That was non-obvious but okay, yes, it is possible! So it works great offline!
I love this app, I really do, but it is not perfect. I had no issues, besides one thing that was really a struggle when trying to get through this app. The handwriting feature. I started learning Korean and after learning Hangul I tried the handwriting feature which did not go well. It kept making me redo characters just because they were not perfectly centered, and making me write them in a specific complicated order instead of what made most sense. Fix that issue, and the app would be perfect
It's one of the best apps to learn languages out there. I really love the new and improved interface and updates that have been added. I hope more languages will be added in the future! (especially romanian, please!). Also, it'd be amazing if we can choose to ignore certain words when practicing vocabulary, just so that we focus more on the difficult words. Overall, it's a great app!
I love lingodeer. It has much better grammar explanation than duolingo or any other app. And i like you can buy it forever, not a subscription. I love recording and comparing my pronunciation with the native speaker. And while i haven't gotten to all the advanced stuff i want to test myself on yet, it seems to have the testing of conjugations that i was seeking! I wanted something that presented all the options of a conjugation and asks you to pick the correct one. Very happy with lingodeer.
I really enjoy using this app to learn Korean. it helps me better understand the characters, etc. But if you are learning a language with a different alphabet than your mother language, I recommend learning the languages alphabet on your own a little bit before. but it's a great app to train my listening and writing skills on Korean. though, they do advertise their premium membership kind of often, but that's okay because it's a great language app, better than duolingo.
I'm currently transitioning from Duolingo to LingoDeer, so it took a little while to get used to. Although, once I did, I rather enjoy it over Duolingo. Though you may already have it, I wish there was a streak notification on my home screen. Anyway, yes, it is a great app. Maybe not exactly a five, but if there was a minimum, it'd be 3.5. The money is definitely worth it. I'm grateful to have access to this app. It teaches more and better than Duolingo.
This review is for "Deer Plus" but I wasn't able to find it so I'm writing it here since this appears to be the same developer. The app would net another star (at the very least) if the its UI didn't sit under the phone's universal nav bar located at the base/bottom of the screen. This poor design makes it impossible to select buttons located at the bottom of the screen. Btw, if there's a setting to bring the app to the front or minimize the nav bar, I can't find it.
