So here's my take on MarineTraffic - Ship Tracking. I've tested a bunch of these maritime/boat tracking apps and this one's pretty solid. The live map is really cool and you can dig into a ton of data on ships, ports, weather conditions, and more. The interface takes some getting used to, but once you figure it out it's pretty intuitive. Compared to some other apps in this category, the free version of MarineTraffic gives you a lot of functionality without needing to pay. The only real downsides I've found are the occasional ads and some features that are locked behind the premium subscription. But overall, if you're into ships and boats, this is one of the better tracking apps out there.

Pros

  • Tons of data on ships, ports, and maritime conditions
  • Live map is really cool to watch the vessels moving around
  • Free version is pretty full-featured, don't need to pay to enjoy it
  • Syncs your saved ships/fleet across devices
  • Smooth performance, works well on older phones

Cons

  • UI can be a bit clunky and confusing at first
  • Some advanced features are locked behind a paywall
  • Occasional ads in the free version can get annoying
  • Doesn't have the most intuitive or user-friendly design

Description

Been using MarineTraffic – Ship Tracking for a couple months now. It’s basically an app that shows you the real-time positions of ships and boats around the world. Pretty solid if you’re into maritime stuff or just wanna keep an eye on the ocean traffic.

Here’s what you can do: you can view the live map and see all the vessels sailing around, search for specific ships or ports, and even check the wind forecasts. There’s also an animated playback feature that lets you track a ship’s route. And you can save your favorite vessels to your own personal “fleet” that syncs across your devices.

Look, if you’re a ship nerd or just like tracking things out on the water, you’ll probably enjoy this app. It’s not perfect – the UI can be a bit clunky at times and the free version has some ads – but overall it does a great job of giving you all that marine traffic data in a pretty user-friendly way. Worth checking out.

I have used this app to identify the ships moving past me on the Ohio River. With the change to satellite, we now cannot identify anything without paying monthly. No...

Do not buy it. I paid for this app, and they've moved the most useful stuff - open ocean posits, behind a further $1/ship/day. So, the app has no use...
