New update is garbage. Same reasons that everyone else is describing, plus my phone has a constant notification at the top stating that McAfee is running in the background. Can't get rid of it. The widget was the best part of the app to begin with. I've used this for years. I'll uninstall the app and I won't renew when my subscription ends. I may just go try Norton and see how their app runs. There are tons of antivirus sales in retail stores this time of year anyway.
Reviews for McAfee Security: Antivirus VPN
← Back to McAfee Security: Antivirus VPNResource usage could be improved, as it IS a bit on the heavy side. According to Android, this app can use a max of over 600mb of RAM, and right now it's using about 150mb in the background. That being said, I've seen plenty worse out of other mobile security suites. For the most part, it's very unobtrusive after it's been tweaked a bit, and it's helpful without trying to do EVERYTHING and take over the system.
App was very good while I had it. After canceling, however, I have had some serious problems. Could be coincidence or could be app/company issue. Immediately after canceling most apps would crash upon opening. I had to spend 2 full days trying to fix this. Also, I immediately started getting an excessive amount of telemarketer calls. All from CA, where they are based, and all having the same recording. I am on the do not call list. Coincidence, perhaps. Sounds fishy to me.
It worked, until a recent update. I subscribe thru an internet provider (and pay for it, which is BS). Anyway, now it opens to a dumb intro and asks me to create an account. I've already been using it! No instructions, no 'log in' option, no forgot password, just one useless page I can't get past. It's now worthless and I'll have to go thru the rigamarole to remove it from my bill and services. Total ripoff.
The only problem that I've ever had with this app is the fact, that this app won't tell how much an app is being used, cause of its own memory manager every other 4 to 6 hours a day, so it can pick up the right amount of time we've been in our apps, by their last access date. Even with all device permissions, and active admin control this app so far can't do that right.
Edit* If you buy a keycard you have to check your email after awhile. I had to wait to get an email and then I could install the app. You can also click on "subscriptions" and from there you can enter your "25 digit code." Otherwise if you click "upgrade" it expects a different code. I had to fiddle with it for awhile before I got a notification email with the downloads. I'm going with AVG next time as it has higher reviews.
Just downloaded the new version of this app and nothing seems to work correctly, about 75% of the functions are gone or do not work, very disappointed. The ease of use the older version had is gone, the memory booster is gone all the stuff you need on a mobile device is gone. Absolutely horrible, if it doesn't get fixed I will be moving on from this app and have to cancel my subscription across all my devices.
Why? The home page widget icon is gone. It was useful to clear memory and check storage. Don't like the new interface - go to the status page, not the "learn more" page. Leaves an icon in the status bar that is at the top of the pull down when checking notifications - not necessary and too wordy. App icon shows 2 notices - which I cannot find. Can't find notification settings. Very difficult to navigate.
Tired of the useless and unwanted notifications. I've gotten the same one, talking about giving my memory (or whatever) a boost, for the last 3 or 4 days straight. Not really user friendly from what little I was able to figure out. Uninstalled. Also not sure what happened to my original review of this. Got notified "developer responded" to my review, but when I went to look the entire thing had disappeared as though it had never happened in the first place. ***I have Norton, it works beautifully
Battery drain at times and never caught a virus in over two years of use. I have this product on my Android and PC for many years and have been skeptical of whether it does it's job effectively. Maybe I am just lucky and do not get malware for my type of online usage. Putting that aside, for the past two weeks, the mobile version has been sucking up my battery hard. My phone all of a sudden went from 28 hrs of usage to 8. And phone gets hot doing nothing too.
Constantly wakes me up in the middle of the night to tell me that apps I have had installed for years are still virus free, setting off my notifications one after the other over a dozen times, sometimes on more than one occasion in a single night. There is no option to customize or deactivate this feature. It is currently 3 in the morning, I am trying to sleep, this app has done its scans twice in the last hour and I've had enough. I will never use a security service through McAfee again.
Great security at reasonable prices. Plus it has a neat little widget to keep all those necessary tools to keep you safe and informed close at hand! I've heard that it causes a lot of phones to run hot, or use a lot of memory.. I've not had that problem personally. However I've got a newer phone with a lot of RAM and a large drive. Soo, no overheating here. It runs smooth, keeps me safe, and freed up a TON of garbage. Afterwards my phone just seemed like it was fresh from the box again. Happy!
The latest update has completely ruined this app. They used to have the vpn as a separate app you could add or not add as you chose. I worked with them for a long time trying to get the vpn to work, but they could never fix it. They knew it was a problem, where it blocks all data service, yet they bundled it in to the primary app now. And guess what? Now the anti-virus blocks all regular data transmission too! I had to remove the app to be able to use my phone again. I am a paying subscriber...
It's obvious majority of customers want ability to clear cache, manually scan, etc., not have education constantly forced on you even though you went through it all when setting up the app. Since renewing to this latest version, I can't access one of my banking apps. Extremely annoyed, and not happy about price going up. I and my family have used McAfee since mid 90's. I've always been happy with the product and have recommended to family and friends. No longer!
Well my subscription will be canceled next September. Removed the widget (used that 99% of the time for a shortcut), can't even look at my actual account details in the app, and it's basically a downgrade of an app once you get down to it. Wish I would have saved my money and bought a different security monitor. Oh and the VPN doesn't work like it's supposed to. For a company that's been around as long as yall, you'd think you'd be making leaps forward in digital security...
Have used McAfee for years and have yet to be disappointed. Used to have my own business; selling, building, and repairing computers, I have used McAfee since the mid 80's and always recommended it to my customers, but I was never disappointed except how expensive the price has gotten. May be confusing at times but does it job plus some. Actually, I would give 10 stars, except for new users, it could be very confusing & little hard for them to understand how exactly to set everything up & price.
The current update RUINED A ONCE GOOD APP! I logged out and now I can't log back in! It shows "Start my FREE 30-day trial", and underneath that it shows "Got an activation code?", even though I'm already subscribed, and have already paid for your service via automatic renewal! What the heck is going on?! I'm a paying customer, and I can't even log in to use the app! McAFee...you're too big of a company, to screw up an app this badly! It was fine just the way it was! Even the widget is now gone!
Since the last update, I am not able to sign in. It is in a continuous loop, keeps asking for password; then, it sends a code, again, it does not work. I have to go on a PC to look at my account. Thus, what's the point of this useless app. Perhaps it's time to move on. When is this useless app going to get fixed. We paid good money for the service. However, we can not sign in.
I have been a Mcafee user for years. It works great on my laptop. However, it just stopped work on my mobile device for android users. After the troubleshooting of reinstalling over and over as suggested, I was asked too many questions instead of actually getting to the root of the issue, and it was just unresolved. Instead of asking the customer about version numbers on the device, product numbers, fix the issue. It states clear that that it's you, not the customer, and to contact support.
i love McAfee on my computer, but the notifications on the phone app are out of control. the same notifications pop up repeatedly despite being dismissed again and again. I tried to manage them, but they still would repeatedly spam my notification bar with the same notifications. Only solution was to turn off notifications, but now it can't notify me when I actually need it to warn me. I shouldn't have to choose between spam notifications and no notifications for an anti-virus app.
