New update is garbage. Same reasons that everyone else is describing, plus my phone has a constant notification at the top stating that McAfee is running in the background. Can't get rid of it. The widget was the best part of the app to begin with. I've used this for years. I'll uninstall the app and I won't renew when my subscription ends. I may just go try Norton and see how their app runs. There are tons of antivirus sales in retail stores this time of year anyway.
Reviews for McAfee Security: Antivirus VPN
Resource usage could be improved, as it IS a bit on the heavy side. According to Android, this app can use a max of over 600mb of RAM, and right now it's using about 150mb in the background. That being said, I've seen plenty worse out of other mobile security suites. For the most part, it's very unobtrusive after it's been tweaked a bit, and it's helpful without trying to do EVERYTHING and take over the system.
App was very good while I had it. After canceling, however, I have had some serious problems. Could be coincidence or could be app/company issue. Immediately after canceling most apps would crash upon opening. I had to spend 2 full days trying to fix this. Also, I immediately started getting an excessive amount of telemarketer calls. All from CA, where they are based, and all having the same recording. I am on the do not call list. Coincidence, perhaps. Sounds fishy to me.
It worked, until a recent update. I subscribe thru an internet provider (and pay for it, which is BS). Anyway, now it opens to a dumb intro and asks me to create an account. I've already been using it! No instructions, no 'log in' option, no forgot password, just one useless page I can't get past. It's now worthless and I'll have to go thru the rigamarole to remove it from my bill and services. Total ripoff.
The only problem that I've ever had with this app is the fact, that this app won't tell how much an app is being used, cause of its own memory manager every other 4 to 6 hours a day, so it can pick up the right amount of time we've been in our apps, by their last access date. Even with all device permissions, and active admin control this app so far can't do that right.
Edit* If you buy a keycard you have to check your email after awhile. I had to wait to get an email and then I could install the app. You can also click on "subscriptions" and from there you can enter your "25 digit code." Otherwise if you click "upgrade" it expects a different code. I had to fiddle with it for awhile before I got a notification email with the downloads. I'm going with AVG next time as it has higher reviews.
Just downloaded the new version of this app and nothing seems to work correctly, about 75% of the functions are gone or do not work, very disappointed. The ease of use the older version had is gone, the memory booster is gone all the stuff you need on a mobile device is gone. Absolutely horrible, if it doesn't get fixed I will be moving on from this app and have to cancel my subscription across all my devices.
Why? The home page widget icon is gone. It was useful to clear memory and check storage. Don't like the new interface - go to the status page, not the "learn more" page. Leaves an icon in the status bar that is at the top of the pull down when checking notifications - not necessary and too wordy. App icon shows 2 notices - which I cannot find. Can't find notification settings. Very difficult to navigate.
Tired of the useless and unwanted notifications. I've gotten the same one, talking about giving my memory (or whatever) a boost, for the last 3 or 4 days straight. Not really user friendly from what little I was able to figure out. Uninstalled. Also not sure what happened to my original review of this. Got notified "developer responded" to my review, but when I went to look the entire thing had disappeared as though it had never happened in the first place. ***I have Norton, it works beautifully
Battery drain at times and never caught a virus in over two years of use. I have this product on my Android and PC for many years and have been skeptical of whether it does it's job effectively. Maybe I am just lucky and do not get malware for my type of online usage. Putting that aside, for the past two weeks, the mobile version has been sucking up my battery hard. My phone all of a sudden went from 28 hrs of usage to 8. And phone gets hot doing nothing too.
