Constant nagging notifications & emails!! I keep turning more and more things off, unsubscribing to newsletters I didn't sign up for, and it still bugs me. "Discounts" offered constantly and aren't very good deals. Heaven forbid if you RSVP for an event you will get a "gift"🙄 and they will never stop nagging you about it. If it wasn't because there is a particular group that I'm involved with that uses this app, I would never download it.
Reviews for Meetup: Social Events & Groups
← Back to Meetup: Social Events & GroupsThe app became very bad after recent updates. I cannot see who is going on a meetup with me. I cannot see the events I registered for on a different device. I cannot click on user (it says unexpected error occurs). Some of this is behind pay wall but some are just bugs. Many organizers have left within the last couple weeks. The app went downhill so quickly, it's so sad.
Great easy to stay in the know of what's going on around you. Keeps you social, trying new things, around new people... just an overall fun and cool idea for an app. I would prefer push notifications over emails. Toooo many emails. Also, wish you didn't have to limit your activities that you like. I'm multifaceted and doing like to be boxed into categories.
Maybe it's just me but from all 3 phones I've used so far. The app is garbage when it comes to "photo upload". The hit or miss is so frustrating. Once the first few pictures are uploaded, that's it...the trouble continues again with the next few pictures. A whole bunch of refresh and you can tell the number of photos shown that is already uploaded fluctuate every time. The only sure way for me has been to always transfer the photos to my laptop then upload them that way or else...headache.
This app is now just a backup for me for finding events to attend. The UI hasn't ever been great. But it didn't need to be. Now paywalling key features? I don't get enough value from Meetup to pay for it. Now, every time I open the app, I get closer to just deleting my account. Good job! Additionally, I can't even navigate the desktop site without getting stuck at a pop-up that won't let me leave without subscribing or closing the window completely. But supply and demand. Hope there's demand.
It's a great app and I love the ability to meet new people with similar interests. I'm giving it a one star to draw attention to a problem I've been having: when joining a new group, I am unable to press the 'Continue' button after answering the questions that some groups request before joining. I am unable to join any group that has qualification questions (on the Android app).
The app used to work well. But they never updated their messaging system to be on par with other messaging apps. Notifications might get sent, but then the message isn't real-time. Or messages may never get sent, or get copied too many times. Connections could be a great way to filter people out and white list them, but I don't think the developers are thinking of that. Website is also buggy, and errors pop up all the time.
In the base app, features like member search and member chat, now sit behind a paywall. Every time you access a group, the paywall request pops up. The cost of the "pay" features is ridiculously expensive. There are not even preferences. Recently, it started defaulting to the Explore tab, rather than the Home tab, with no means to change it. It used to be a great program. Now it is barely usable.
This app is extremely slow and often is not user-friendly. I have you use the back guesture to go back a screen as pressing the arrow to go back does not work. it is very cumbersome going back and forth through the screens to try to get where I need to be. Fur the can stay of running a group this app should be more up to date with a better UI that is functional and worthwhile to spend time on.
The fee you have to pay in order to chat with members is outrageous and offensive, especially when the app doesn't work that great, difficult to search for events, notifications are excessive yet do not always lead to useful information, etc. If individual users have to pay fees, why do groups have to pay additional fees to be on meetup? Then the groups have to ask people for donations. No noticable improvement has been made since the app charges fees. It is just a disappointment.
The Meetup app is the best case example of enshittification. The company does everything they can to consistently make the app less user friendly and functional, constantly throwing up annoying subscription messages, hiding members' faces, and now doing things like replacing the immediately visible "going" info with totally unrelated "interested" info for people most of whom will never even join. And they do all this despite having a steady stream of payments! Truly disgusting.
The app is a little overwhelming. Messages coming from every direction. I get charged $5 WEEKLY AND then depending on the activity there's another pre-payment of whatever they are asking. I imagined that if a meet-up was at a bar or restaurant, I'd pay for myself. Didn't think someone else would order the food and I'd have a set amount to chip in. I could see paying $5/ a MONTH, not weekly for the app. Canceled my subscription altogether! 👎
The app regularly switches half the text to Spanish, while the rest remains in English. There's no way to fix it since you can't pick your preferred language. When I bring this up to the support team, they blow me off with some canned response and then closed my ticket without fixing the issue. It's been this way for almost a year.
The app and platform as a whole have gone downhill so much in recent years. And lately it's been even worse because it keeps changing my language to Spanish when it should be English. I've updated my settings on my phone and in Meetup multiple times, restarted my phone, and even tried other languages like Australian English to try and work around the issue, but it always switches to Spanish. The search and filter functions are terrible and have only been getting worse, and the cost is ridiculous
I've never been spammed by any app as much as this one. I get no less than 20-30 emails a day from them and no matter how many times I unsubscribe, they keep coming from various email names. It's awful. And 90% of the events scheduled you need to pay for. The free ones you have to get put on a waiting list. And you have to pay to be on the waiting list but potentially never attend. This app was a terrible decision.
Good app to explore interests. However, as of 9.25.25 they have something like 5 different types of membership that do the same thing and they even allow/encourage you to sign up for all of the different types of memberships simultaneously. This feels a bit like a scam. I reached out to customer service, but that seems to be very poor. They only have email and FAQs and don't even understand your request very well. And for note, I've been using the app for over 10+ years.
Extremely slow, & buggy at times. For being mostly a text based app with few graphics, Meetup is annoyingly slow. Group pages & events take too long to load even when connected to strong wifi. Sometimes events dated for 2 days way say "happening tomorrow". In the past year, it started adding annoying pop up ads after you RSVP to an event, as well as popups to rate previously attended events. I've not found a way to turn off any of these options. Overall it seems updates don't make improvements
This app used to be so easy to find an event and just show up. Now they made the app very difficult to navigate. It's not so much a learning curve, it's bad flow to gather information. And clobbered with ways to get your money...I get they need to make money, but to ask me to join EVERY time I open an event is messed up. And it's full of online events that I constantly have to reset the filter on to hide. It's such a headache to use, I open it, try to find something then just close it. Awful.
I've been an organizer with meetup 17 years and it has gone downhill ovee.the last 7 years or so. The price to organize a group has gone up but with nothing important to offer to justify the extreme cost increase. And now you can pay as a user to get a more enhanced experience? I think not. I wouldn't waste anymore money on this app, especially since there are other, comparable apps out there now that cost way less to operate and are more fun to use.
A decent app to find groups & events but has annoying problems. Very buggy and slow. Constant nag screens to pay for features that were previously free. Unable to disable notifications. Get notifications even when logged out. Event listings label events as "Today" and "Tomorrow" incorrectly. Some aspects of usability are unintuitive. Fees to group organizers has gotten prohibitively expensive.
