Reviews for Microsoft Authenticator

← Back to Microsoft Authenticator

I expected more from a company that would probably consider itself at the forefront of technical prowess. This app is a piece of junk whose only effect has been to make it harder for me to access my own account. How on earth did you make an app capable of telling me to open authenticator...while I'm IN AUTHENTICATOR?! And when I obviously can't perform app-ception, it locks me out. When it's not doing that the directions/required permissions go in circles making it impossible to sign in. Trash.

The app is very useful, I am able to keep my devices connected to Microsoft super safe, especially when I travel and need access to their services on insecure Internet accesses. Update: May 16, 2025 As a result, I lost access to multiple accounts I’ve had for years. The company offered no meaningful support in recovering them. The only ones I managed to get back into required government ID verification. That’s how bad it was. This app just isn't worth the risk.

Creating a product that requires you to use the app to verify the account your are currently trying to activate is incredibly stupid. I have spent six hours trying to connect an account to complete required training that I cannot gain access to. What an epic fail by Microsoft, if I could give negative stars for quality and customer service I would.

The app itself is fine and does exactly what it needs to do. The problem is Microsoft. They seem to be intent on taking the most basic apps that we all need and use them as an ad vector to try to sell you on more of their services. This app sends a notification when I need to authenticate a login.Do I can't turn off notifications. But recently it's been also sending notifications for auto fill services. These are ads and have nothing to do with the primary reason for the app. Stop doing this!

I like the idea, but the app seems buggy. Half the time when it sends me the notification and I press the number and approve it, it then says the "password" is incorrect. Not really sure what that means as I'm not even using a password! I have this app on my iPad as well and it has the same issue. Shame because I like the idea of being completely passwordless and want this to work!

I had to get a new phone, and during the transfer,I still have to enter passwords. well, a lot were tied to the Authenticator. but I can't add them because it then sends a code to the authenticator, which doesn't have that account, so I can't verify it. Then when I contact Microsoft and try to reset everything, and fill out the verification form accurately, because I printed out my answers, they say that there wasn't enough information that matched. so now, I'm locked out of ALL of my accounts

Absolute Trash. The most convoluted setup process. Randomised numbers are not a default. Notifications are inconsistent. Often appearing after the initial prompt has expired. So if you work in an Azure environment, you're almost guaranteed to lose 25 minutes of your day to this “authtenticator“ Never thought I'd be nostalgic for the Entrust/RSA days, but here we are.

I don't have a lot of love for Microsoft products, but I can't complain when an app does exactly what it advertises without pushing anything on it's user base. I've never seen an ad in MS authenticator, not even for other Microsoft apps. I've never been pushed to create an account, sign up for premium access, or do anything other than what this app does. I love that I can add any number of personal, non-Microsoft accounts. I also love that business and personal accounts use the same app.

Forced to use for work, when trying to log into Outlook. Only started trying to push it on us last week yet it will be defunct August 1st? What's the point in that? Also, seems a security issue to REQUIRE us to use a specific app for WORK authentication! There's an outrageous number of people saying they got completely locked out of all their accounts permanently. who knows how it has such high stars considering how many one star reviews if you check them. More I could say but space ran out!

The authenticator app stopped working for no reason I could find. I tried to reset and everything but nothing worked. I then spent 2 hours going round in circles, calling customer service, and having AI tell me to go online and get help which I cant as I cant log in to be able to do this, as my authenticator is broken. I tried every choice on the phone to talk to a human, and AI just kept hanging up on me. I now have no access to either email, no way of resetting them. Dreadful system and CS

I only use this for my main Microsoft account and anything that forces me to use it. Sync absolutely does NOT back up all accounts. I had to manually transfer all additional accounts when I switched devices this week, despite them supposedly being synced for months beforehand. I've had to do that before, and it caused a HUGE issue the first time. It happened on multiple devices over many years, so don't go trying to blame my devices or versions of Android. I can't trust MS products any more.

I'll give this a four star rating only because it seems like it has potential, but there is an issue that keeps happening on my end. My university recently started using this and sometimes when I'm trying to confirm my login, the yes option won't work and it's just frozen there and I have to use a different method to log in. Seems like a bug with the app.

This is the only authenticator app I've ever had to use that outright deleted all of your authentication methods when you get a new phone. I see they added a backup option, but it's turned off by default, it's not advertised, and it's hidden in the settings. Can't wait to have to reset everything... Using Google's authenticator because it actually keeps my stuff intact.

This app works great unless you need to restore from a backup and attach a new phone. When you restore from a good backup, it forces you to verify every single account again. what is the point of a backup recovery, if I have to set it all up again. I am an IT administrator and have lots of accounts attached to this app. This has happened multiple times, so shame on me for continuing to use this app. Donezo!

Make sure to download on a device you won't lose. I got a new phone, as most everyone does every couple of years. well... how am I supposed to log into the authenticator app without being able to approve a sign-in using the... Authenticator app.... AND THERE IS 0 WAY TO FIX IT. I now have to go through my supervisor to IT to reset it. I know the password... its correct. I'm logged in, but I have access to nothing because I can't use the app without accepting it.

Not really sure what the point of this app is except to make it more difficult to access your account. Constantly ask for a code then when I type it in, it says incorrect. Why do we even have to download a separate app to access our account??? I am trying to pay my past due subscription, but can't even log in. What happened to the simple days of just signing in and calling it day?🙄

I used to love the app. I would be able to have passwords on hand & quickly accessible & easy to use. Now, since the new update, I wasn't able to create a new password to save to my account or even search for them, nor log in anymore. App deleted all my info. I have a lot of passwords, so it takes me time to look for the one I need one by one. Sucks that the app isn't working as it used to...

This is the most aggravated I can remember being in a long time. I've been trying to get my work email on outlook for the last 3 hours, and have been in a nonstop loop of outlook giving me a code to enter into authenticator, and then opening authenticator and having no prompt for the code. I've tried Uninstalling, updating, restarting my phone, using my desktop... none of it works properly, and my work is going ro be halted for the entire weekend as a result.

Using the app, I saved passwords and used the one-time sign-in code for my Microsoft products or accounts. I recently discovered that I no longer have access to all my passwords, saved payment methods, & auto login feature for my accounts on my phone. In recent updates discussed in the past months, they removed this feature. I didn't have much warning that I would lose access to all my saved passwords. I love the convenience of this app, & I always brag about how great it is to family & friends.

Beyond worthless. I set this up years ago. But now when i try to log into my xbox account, it'll say "press these numbers on the authenticator app!" And guess what happens when i load the app? NOTHING. Classic technology making everything inaccessible. But hey, we NEED 2 factor everywhere. 2 years later, still literally never a single time. authenticator only shows a dynamic 8 code, never the 2 digits the apps im trying to sign into as for.
