Halfway through the first lesson, I'm done. Very similar to Duolingo, but not free. I'm not a fan of this learning process for Japanese at all! Frustrating, and not likely to progress as fast as they think. There are a lot of missing words or translations for words that leave you guessing when you're trying to learn (not helpful, irritating, and a waste of time). I tried 3 Pimsleur lessons, and it is a little better, but I really don't like their process either. 😑 I'll have to keep looking
Reviews for Mondly: Learn 41 Languages
← Back to Mondly: Learn 41 LanguagesI like this app enough I PAID FOR IT ! LOL XP Seriously tho, I use this app a lot. Presently learning 3 langauges and plan to add more. Barely had scratched the surface with the free version , but after a few months of use I decided to spend $50.00 and get a year's subscription. That's less than 15 cents a day. A bargain compared to many other pieces of learning software.
Tried the (very) lacking free lesson; I feel it could be good for those who are fairly familiar with their intended learning language (for me, French). It seems a little too short of a free try to know for sure if it'll be very beneficial in the long run and pushes you to buy into their subscription after everything you do, which is annoying. Doesn't seem to have much explanation for basic grammar lessons but the chatbot is something I'd like to try more, if not for the "buy now" restrictions.
It has so many languages options and you can learn several different langauges at the same time. The lessons are easy to follow, you can also change the written language preference. It has pronunciation practice as well, which is very helpful. I enjoyed having a short conversation with the chat bot, even when it cannot recognize when I said "私はアメリカから来ました。” I had to lie to get pass the same question. The premium price is very affordable.
I've had good experience so far while learning Chinese. However, I was casually doing the speaking session of the lesson, and when I spoke into it the word appeared and then a weird noises started playing from the sound wave thing at the bottom of the screen. From then on the chat glitched and wouldn't work. Maybe it was just me, but it was weird and I hope it doesn't happen again.
I bought this language app because of the variety of languages and the great deal for a lifetime membership. While I am learning some from using it daily, there is definitely room for improvement. Positive: it has categories, such as hotels, restaurants, and more, so you can tailor your learning. Negative:Daily lessons often use random sentences that nobody will use. I have been told how to say the mouse is small several times! Better content needed! Explain grammar a little.
Day one. The hands free mode sounded very useful, so I wanted to use mondly while walking. Overall it works okay but has difficulty understanding me at times, with certain kinds of words. For example, I am learning Japanese and had to say "Very well" or "totema genki" (I might have that wrong, it's only day one). Even when my surroundings were pretty quiet, it was almost impossible to get it to recognize "totema". This is frustrating but I'm able to continue the lesson so it doesn't hold me back
The format of the lessons is really good, and it has the right kind of gamification. However, sometime the translations are a bit freer than I think they should be, which I think makes it harder for a language learner, because it's harder to see the patterns. Also, it often rejects correct answers because it doesn't match the exact translation they intend, even if the answer given is correct and sometimes even more faithful a translation then the intended one.
Nice short lessons, but a lot of times it feels like I'm being thrown into a sentence knowing less than half of the words and am expected to translate it. Would be nice if the English translations had American English translations too, as I sometimes have to stop to find out what an English word means. Above all else though: Never, ever, skip a day if you are a free user. Skipping a day means you can't do the weekly or monthly test since you can't go back to complete the missed day.
This app has potential. I think the most frustrating part is the "Put to use" at the end of the lesson. It seems to not pick up what I say very well, and the conversation doesn't continue. Edit: another problem I've just run into, if I'm speaking a sentence with a number, for example in Italian, it's asking me to say dodici but the app copies the number 12 down instead the spelling of the word, and I get marked incorrect.
The availability of many languages appealed to me at first, & Ieven purchased an annual membership, but as times progressed (a little more than 2 years), I noticed the learning was becoming stagnant. There isn't a method to learning the alphabet for languages, yet you're giving letters/characters to form sentences or to spell a word. Another issue is the voice lessons, I have had many issues with repeating words + phrases, & the app can't pick up the audio, which is frustrating. Will delete it.
the best way to learn to speak a language is to speak it. when your voice response system is widly inaccurate. this is a huge problem. I'm trying to say something simple like "Dobar Dan" phonetically," Doh Bahr dahn," comes out as "those are done." This app used to be better. when you spoke to the app, it was more accurate. i dont know if it is the new AI in the phone, thats always trying to predict what you're saying, is causing these issues. but you need to fix this if im going to continue pay
in terms of learning language, it's decent so far. but the speaking algorithm is AWFUL unless you're in a quiet room. it picks up everything except for what you're saying and then it doesn't hear what you said correctly. or it keeps listening long after you've stopped speaking because it hears the wind. fix this please.
while I do feel like it might help learn Korean I feel like it is teaching the absolute most formal version of it most of the time. While that isn't wrong, in day-to-day conversation people don't often use SUPER formal speech. I also think some of the first things thrown in were informal Korean. What we need to learn is just plain formal Korean.... not really a fan but I can see how it would help some people learn.
Text is tiny and Font Size and Display Size Settings are ignored. It is often not possible to use the app with largest font and display size. The Russian character set is used for validation of voice lessons but hasn't been taught, so not possible to do. The daily lessons are only 5 minutes. There is a forced consent notice at the top 1/3 of the Home scene which cannot be removed unless notifications are allowed (there is symbolically no Cancel button, only OK).
Super clean app, One of the better ones. I like that you can click on the English words and it shows you the translation most other apps don't translate individual words. One thing that I don't like is playback on bookmarked words is buggy, you have to hit a small button then forced to listen at half speed and some don't work.
It's fine. It's no different from any other popular language app except supposedly more correct to native speakers. It does not explain grammar or the reasons for word use and sentence structure or formatting which is a total failure for all current popular language apps in my opinion. I don't want to memorize things, I want to understand them. It's very different.
revised review, it's incredibly infuriating to use this app. the speaking feature is terrible, I get that sounds like my pronunciation is just bad, but tell me why I spent 10-15 minutes trying to get it to recognize that I was saying "gorila" and not Kamela/Karela/etc(after the first 5 I just wanted to see how long and how many tries it'd take for it to get it). yeah it teaches you, but it barely works and most of it's behind another money grabbing paywall. only pro is the lack of ads
I love this app! I am learning Afrikaans and my boyfriend is South African, so that helps with my lessons. I just need you to fix some stuff, when I do the review some of the words and sentences are not given by a native speaker, but rather a voice that speaks my native tongue completely obliterating the words and that screws up my learning ability.
Great for language learning from a company that knows how to craft educational materials. The lessons are short and well organized with a variety available to keep your interest. There is actual scaffolding from known to unknown and sneaky learning by context thrown in, as well. I was honestly not sure what to expect after trying a bunch of other language apps. I tried the demo and was sold almost right away. No regrets since.
