So here's my take on MyShake - I've tested a bunch of earthquake alert apps and this one's pretty solid. The early warning feature is really cool and could actually save your life if a big quake hits. The safety info is handy too. On the downside, the alerts can be a bit inconsistent and the app is a little basic overall. But for a free app, it's a pretty good option if you live in the Pacific Northwest.

Pros

  • Gets you earthquake alerts a few seconds before the shaking starts
  • offers basic earthquake safety tips and preparedness info
  • Free to download and use, no paywalls or in-app purchases
  • Works reliably on older phones, doesn't drain your battery too much

Cons

  • Alerts can sometimes be delayed or miss smaller quakes
  • Safety tips are a bit generic, not super in-depth
  • Doesn't have a ton of extra features beyond the basics
  • Occasional ads can be annoying if you don't pay

Description

Been using MyShake Earthquake Alerts for a couple months now. It’s basically an app that sends you early warnings if a big earthquake is about to hit your area. Pretty solid if you live in California, Oregon or Washington and want to get a heads up before the shaking starts.

Here’s what you can do – it uses the USGS ShakeAlert system to detect quakes and send you alerts, usually a few seconds before you actually feel the shaking. And there’s also a bunch of earthquake safety tips and info, which is pretty useful. And you can even get alerts for smaller quakes, not just the big ones.

Look, if you’re worried about earthquakes or just want to be prepared, you’ll probably like this app. It’s not perfect – sometimes the alerts are a little delayed and the safety tips can be a bit basic. But overall it does the job and it’s free, so worth checking out.
