only reason I downloaded it is cause Google maps doesn't work in Korea but experience has been a night mare nothing like the Google one. Hard to navigate and can't find places unless you type the name precisely as the system likes it. When looking for routes it also proposes you a new one every minute. lastly, links of places shared are very hard to open. Also, GPS location is way off compared to Google. Will uninstall immediately after leaving Korea
Reviews for NAVER Map, Navigation
← Back to NAVER Map, NavigationExtremely buggy when logging in. This is what happen when an app have no competition. Creating an account is OK, but logging in got your account suspended for no apparent reason and it seems unreversable. The capcha is unreadable by human, Google map is unavailable because of security law so I am forced to use this buggy app.
Necessary evil to navigate in South Korea. Google maps is forcefully unable to navigate in the country yet this and another competitor has full reins to navigate driving and transit. This app is not foreigner friendly at all. You can't search in English, and has to be Korean. Imagine saving all your POIs in English and having so much difficulty copying those to this app. That was my experience. Not to mention, if you're a foreigner it will block your account. Battery drain is horrible.
FOREIGNERS DO NOT USE!! It's supposed to be a very useful app with a lot of places&reviews available (that are unavailable in Google maps) but apparently it has been suspending a lot of overseas accounts..! I was planning my itinerary with a lot of places bookmarked but now it's suspended & can't resolve it, the error writes "there's nothing we can do about it" ?!?! Lots have reported same issue online and some are unfortunate that it's suspended during their trip! Swapped to kakao map now 😤
I used to use this app always for navigating, yet something happened when I try to navigate, it skips way ahead of my GPS location. Like way ahead. I have to memorize a turn it takes 2 km from my position. Often missing the spot. I've stopped my motorcycle only to find that it just keeps moving along the route. I cant find a setting to change it and dont know why it started doing that.
An absolutely essential app if you are driving in Korea since it now has an English interface. We drove the length of the country relying entirely on this to get around, would have been lost without it. Honestly I think it's probably even better than Google maps in the US, the interface is clear and uncluttered, and the spoken directions are accurate and timely. Warns of speed cameras (these are everywhere in Korea) and flashes red if you are over the limit when approaching a camera, and more.
Decent app, horrible experience. When trying to sign up, I used my US number (I'm traveling) but it blocks sign up because my IP address is in Korea. I'm traveling! I fixed this by using a VPN, but then the verification code doesn't arrive. I tried several times. Hours later I receive all the codes. I try again and sign up successfully. Then my account is immediately suspended. This is super frustrating. I'm traveling. Naver doesn't seem to support that use case.
Useful app. The details of Korean map information is much better than those of Google map. However, its gps function is not working properly often. Several times it locates me in a nearby, but not exact place, so it calculates the travel information incorrectly, especially when I use buses in Seoul. As far as gps is concerned, Google map is much more accurate. But if you plan to travel with subway in the city, it's pretty good.
Was trying to use this app in South Korea due to Google maps not working properly. Was very frustrating even in English mode because they were places that I wanted to look up and go to. However, there was no English translation or Roman letter translation. Plus the app does not give the most optimal walking conditions. buses were either late or not as accurate. Such a huge letdown. I would hope that the app would improve especially for the English version.
Completely useless. If you can get a taxi at all, most of the time the drivers struggle to read street addresses in English or Korean..? Every single taxi experience involved us sitting and waiting for 5 mins for the driver to figure out where the map is pointing to... The app itself is buggy and laggy with navigation, and location information is more or less useless. We resorted back to Google Maps almost every time. Don't go without a translation app, and still you will struggle in South Korea
Great navigation app for Koreans. Horrendous public transportation options for non-Koreans. This app doesn't give the optimal route when you need to catch the next train or bus. They give you the following train or bus, which adds between 5-10 minutes to your expected arrival time. It's also ironic they tell you the best car to enter for fast transfer but they don't tell you which platform to take. My bad experience makes me wish Google Maps was a thing in Korea
Older version was better because tracking via GPS (even without mobile data connection) was better. Newest version requires mobile data to be turned on all the time. Newest version seems to freeze alot. All in all the older version was much more stable and versatile. Why did you guys screw up an app that was already pretty effective????
Even when set to English, Naver Maps can't find a lot of places when written in English (or with Roman letters for that matter). Naver Maps, for some strange reason can't provide walking routes. Google Maps, however, is worse than a few years ago in South Korea. You simply get a blank screen when clicking on directions.
Only good option for Korea and it sucks. Sure it will help you get to your destination and works well in when the trains and sometimes buses will arrive. Calculating the cost for each public transportation works good also. But if you navigate out of your starting point and will not update the route. A lot of times it throws you way outside where you are located. Searching for specific things completely sucks.
This app is so horrible. Despite claiming it has an English version, it can ONLY give you results when you type in Korean. It can also ONLY give you results when you put in the exact (Korean) word with absolutely no mistakes. If you put in "Mcdonalds" without the apostrophe, it won't give you any results. When you DO get results on something, it only gives you results by "relevance" instead of distance from you, meaning everything is far away, instead of the closest options to you. Horrible!
Pretty much what others said already, the app doesn't translate the names of certain places, so I had to guess where my train/bus stop was. My main issue is the photo section of places. I wanted to see the photo of places to see what they offer, but there are so many pictures that have NOTHING to with places. Why am I seeing picture or videos someone walking their pets when I wanted to check out restaurants? The teams at Naver need to clean that up or organize better.
If you put spaces between words, it doesn't give you results. -Businesses who have English signage/names are often not found if you type the name in English. -If you type "restaurants" it will give you everything that is closed. It doesn't understand when you say something like "restaurants in Gangnam." Often it will give you a result of a place named Gangnam restaurant...on Jeju. Basically, it doesn't really speak English, but Google maps is blocked from useful info so...you're stuck.
Pretty essential for living in Seoul. The English version isn't very good, imo. I use the Korean version. I appreciate the detailed info about public transport arrival times and which train door to use to shorten your next transfer time. (Arrival times aren't always 100% accurate, but would it be reasonable to expect that?) I have sometimes had a little trouble with looking up addresses on the app, but I suspect that is because of poor choices in the way the addresses are written.
I was hesitant to install this app because of its rating. I was visiting Korea and tried using Kakao map first. Naver worked much better. I used mainly buses and trains and it worked like a charm. It never led me astray. Most locations I put in English it recognized, unlike Kakao maps. There are some annoyances so always double check the location you want to go. Highly recommended.
Ok, after using it for a few days, the app is great for providing direction using public transportation.. very accuratem However not everything appears in English, even though tou change the language to English. Also, I'm assuming bc it lacks the capability to look for things in English, it doesn't do a good job finding things so I look for them on Google maps and then enter the address. Also, when you enter the address, add name, number without the district and/or country. Naver won't find it.
