This app is quirky. I'm only allowed 500 characters, so I'll try to describe it. When using it with Android Auto, it must also be running and displaying on your phone. When storing offline maps, they're really stingy with the space they let you use. The map sizes are so small that it takes me many maps to store a large enough area to be useful. Other than the above, it's a pretty good app. I'll keep using it, hoping they continue to make improvements.
Reviews for onX Offroad: Trail Maps & GPS
← Back to onX Offroad: Trail Maps & GPSThe app is actually extremely good. I absolutely loved using it in Moab and it really is essential. There's just one major issue that kept me from giving it 5 stars. The app is SUPER power hungry, it drains the battery on my phone fast and I have to plug it in every few hours of using it. It also makes my phone run extremely hot. I have rebooted my phone, made sure no background apps are simultaneously running, but it still makes my phone get real hot. The app needs more efficient programming.
Notifications regularly re-enable themselves. That's unacceptable, and a major reason for my rating. It's not the only one though. That aside, the app is _fine_, and gathers data from multiple sources. It's just not specialized enough to ever pay for, given you can get the same data on maps for cheaper or free from elsewhere. And given other gps apps are just nicer to use, this app doesn't bring anything special to the table to justify it's price.
The app is quite useless. I downloaded it to hopefully find some nice free camping spots since I'm tight on money but still want to go outside. Buttons don't work, it gives little-to-no information about trails, trails that I know exist aren't even on the map, and most of the features I would need while out and about are locked behind a subscription (I'm so tired of everything always being locked behind subscriptions). Uninstalled immediately.
UPDATE: Their customer service is great! They were really friendly and got back to me quickly. Unfortunately, I think I've just got a really bad bug and can't get an account started. On the email/password screen, it freezes after I enter everything and then it does nothing. I'll wait until they update the login feature and try again at that point.
I only went on one route, so my experience is limited. Part of the route was what I expected, gravelly, up and down hills. Then it went into an overgrown area I could barely get through. I was riding a bicycle which made things worse. The app needs to indicate the modes of transportation that are appropriate. Also, part of the route was over an area "Private, do not enter".
After upgrading to Elite sylubscription during the Memorial Day sale, I can no longer use this app with Android Auto. I get an error message that says I need to purchase the Premium subscription which is the version below Elite. onX support has acknowledged the issue but has not resolved it. They have become unresponsive to emails asking for an update on the issue.
Haven't had much time lately to use the app, but when I did it worked fine for the most part. The bad part of this app is their auto renewal. Since I haven't had much time to wheel lately I didn't want to pay $99.99 for another year on an app I don't use right now. These guys say you have to call Stripe to cancel. Who the heck is Stripe? They have no contact info or means to speak to anyone, that's who. So I got charged another $99.99 and these people just lost a customer. It's a scam. Don't.
what happened? I just reinstalled this app to find most of the features that used to be included in the free version are now locked behind the subscription paywall. Additionally, as an opponent of subscription-based software, I can't rate this higher than 2 stars. I remember activity, trail type, and difficulty filters being available in free. Again, what happened to buy-it-and-have-it purchases? SaaS sucks.
I was to save our trails at Easter Jeep Safari as a trail leader. Every time I left the app to take a picture or anything else ìt would ask if I wanted to dismiss or resume the current trail. No matter what it deleted the prior part of the trail without saving. It didn't matter if I hit pause first. Very disappointed as this was the only reason we got this app. The only way it would save the whole trail is if you didn't leave the app at all throughout the day.
5G or WIFI it won't show me my content, won't zoom in for details, nothing. very disappointing. It worked really well for about two weeks. update: After this issue I started getting a pop up from Onx saying it's not you it's us ? it has since been fixed apparently because now it seems to be working "mostly ok" Still a little wonky with direction of travel, and yes it needs a pretty strong connection. It does eat a lot of data and power. I will update stars later if deserved.
Seems to have lots to work with! Some trails don't exist that are on All trails. I use Backcountry, decided to give this a try for off-road. I love all the trail reports and facts to read up on before heading out. Super big complaint, the navigation feature is horrible! Each time I switch to my camera the darn thing would lose me and I could never get back. Would always need to restart the navigation. Lastly the turn by turn navigation voice is way too low and doesn't function over Bluetooth.
It might be a good app, but I wouldn't know because it's unusable due to the fact that it doesn't fluidly track your vehicle. It jerkily refreshes your position every 2 seconds and is behind where you actually are. Not sure why it's doing this. It's like it's trying to load too much info so it's constantly mini-freezing. I have an s10 e. An older phone but I don't think that's the issue. I literally have zero issues with any other nav ap Totally useless as a navigation app. Big waste of money.
You finally made the blue dot (GPS position) bigger, but I still have a hard time seeing it. Between the dust, screen glare, and motion of my sxs, I have to stop to figure out where I'm at. Make it a different color than any of the trails and make it flash. Add an option to keep your position in the middle of the screen like most GPS maps do. Yep, I'm holding onx offroad hostage with my review. Edit: I upped my rating due to the fast and personalized response from onx Offroad. :)
OnX offload has made some great recent improvements. Slope angle is such a great way to see topography quickly. They now show dispersed camping, which is so great. a couple af improvements that could be made would be to identify if there is a right of way through private lands. this is probably the biggest unknown still. Sometimes it is legal and sometimes they are gated. it would be great if that shows up on the land ownership information that onX already uses, and could be added.
When I've used it, it's been decent. Now, though, it won't even open. When I try and log in through the app, it takes me to a web page and gives me a black page. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've turned off the browser security and even tried opening in a new browser. If I open the website directly, it works, but isn't formatted for a phone so really, it's still broken.
It's okay but could be better. Sometimes the app loads on my androidauto, sometimes it doesn't; this seems to happen most often when I'm out of cell service areas. If you download the offline maps it still struggles to navigate you with the route so be prepared to just turn your screen to "always on" and follow best you can. The satellite imagery could be better to see the trail details. Login issues where sometimes I just get server error and it works when it wants to. Don't buy a full price.
onx off-road user experience is not the best. first it is somewhat difficult to use out of the box but once you get used to using it you can navigate it. The base map area highlighting cannot be removed. This adds a lot of clutter and hides satellite imagery when you want to look specifically at certain areas. There are a lot of buttons to remove other types of overlays but the shading associated with areas cannot be removed. also they do not have global login for the different apps.
It's not a bad app. They make the process to cancel confusing, and I don't like that it signs you up for auto renewal when you purchase a subscription. Luckily, customer support was able to help me cancel the auto renewal. The app itself is user-friendly. The free version isn't very helpful. The paid version is good. Just make sure you download offline maps ahead of time. It is glitchy at best when run on Android Auto. I usually have to run it on my phone to get it to work properly.
I love it for exploring, figuring out where to go, looking at property lines etc. Besides that the app is clunky, has too much going on. Can't use it for navigation, when you zoom in or look at the map while navigating it changes the view settings, will NOT stay in North Up. Its absolutely annoying. I couldn't use the elite account I paid for, for 8 months (it didn't recognize my account on a different phone) after a month of emailing them they fixed it but didn't reimburse me in any way.
