Sept 2025 Just reinstalled on my new phone and discovered that the tracks on ALL my previously saved routes have changed from red to blue which makes them difficult to see. Can't see any option to reset them back to red. Dec 2024 Just wanted to create a new route and discovered that the default line is blue and thin, so difficult to see - also my previous routes are same. Route styling says change it in "settings" BUT this isn't listed in my "settings" menu, so appears to be hidden somewhere!!
Reviews for OS Maps: Explore hiking trails
← Back to OS Maps: Explore hiking trailsusing app now on Offa's Dyke. we don't use the 'start route' because it drains the battery. instead we tap the route to go to the map and see where we are often the background map is just white - all we see is the red gpx line. sometimes we're on busy roads and quickly want to check where we are. when we get the 'white screen of death' we have to close and reopen the app many times before the background map appears (even though we have downloaded the map) we're subscribers both on android
Great in many ways. I usually don't need the paper map, but sometimes do because the image on the screen is small. Within this limit, good clear mapping with the facility to zoom in to better than 1:25k when wanted. Since my last review in 2021, the app has been very much improved. I particularly value the activity recording, the facility to turn recorded activity into routes, and the facility to record while following a route. Would like to be able to view any period of history that I choose
v. 5.4.5.1407. I've given this three stars because almost every other time I use this app and start an activity, usually hiking, the app will start recording but then when I open the app to pause and then stop and save the session, it's already stopped. It shows the first part of the hike but non of the rest. It isn't saved either and you don't get the option to save.
great for a quick study. can be really slow down loading certain map tiles(always the one you need) and misses the feature of being able to move the map around you. ie. you in the screen centre or where you drag yourself to then the map moves around you, so that you can use it as a manual navigation aid while on the go without having to keep messing with the screen. having real maps though, os great. this little thing would make it a game changer for me
I'm sure the full price app. great if you know where you want to walk (but)....! I paid for a -50% year's premium subscription offer and not sure it's what I thought I was getting. Tried searching local area for some inspiration but appears like there's nothing nearby, so it suggests I have to drive to get to a start point. From first impressions, it doesn't feel intuitive to use and I'm unlikely to resubscribe. Also tried looking on their website for inspiration but none there!
I think the app has got much worse over time. I have loads of issues now that never occurred before and, as a result, will not be renewing. Update - even more issues. Whenever I search for a town or city, the only options that appear are in the US. Ridiculous!
Dreadful app, avoid. There are much more reliable options out there. Just does not work consistently, it crashes, screen goes black, maps don't appear... Example: I import a route and when I view it the map is blank and white. I then have to go to the "Saved" tab and select the map in there just to view it. Example: If I go to "maps" I get a yellow overlay on maps I've already downloaded. A lot of random faffing around seems to clear this.
like the maps but the way the app seems to work is poor. It had me doing 30mph when I started to record a route whilst standing still ! The speed did settle down after walking a few hundred yards. Have also found the app over records distance by nearly 15 percent.
At first, the app worked fine. But after a while, when I click on a hike, it just says "Internet Required" and won't show anything. I tried reinstalling the app twice, but the error is still reoccurring, so the app is basically useless. This error occurs over both WiFi and mobile data; I've got all permissions enabled.
Download your map before you go to your destination or you may find you have no signal and the app is useless. But the search facility is baffling... type in Rochester, for example, and you get a load of results in North America which isn't even covered by the Ordnance Survey, but what's worse is that the search results don't tell you this, so finding the one in Kent takes clicking through Illinois and other far off locations just marked as 'town' or 'city'. Bizarre and maddening.
A superb app, as one would expect from Ordnance Survey, but it loses a star because it no longer supports screen rotation to view in landscape mode. That is just so frustrating. Update. Lo and behold, it now works in landscape 😊. It's so nice when a developer actually reads and acts on people's comments. Updated to 5 stars.
Used to be good, with some issues. Becoming awful with added 'features' that detract from the core functionality and get in the way of using the maps. Search is terrible. Going the way of previous mapping apps that I've used. If only lessons were learned about not overstuffing apps and actually trying to use them in real world situations.
OS maps are the British standard and are a must for any outdoor person using navigation. I have used paper maps for years and it's easy to use the app alongside these with the benefit of GPS (always take a paper map as well though). Dropped a star because the route creating does some very strange things when you let it follow tracks, which should be the intuitive way to use it. Very frustrating. But app is good overall
I love the app but I totally agree with David Board from 3 May 2025. "Just frustrating when updates bring problems. I'm getting automatic activity tracking (even though I have it disabled ), the compass lock to north keeps coming off when I open the app, and fuzzy maps or blank areas even though I have downloaded the area and route for offline. Really disappointing."
Very slow to load maps, even when the section is allegedly downloaded for offline use. Too much focus on the "social" side like route sharing and suggestion rather than being a good mapping app. For anyone looking for a decent mapping app Memory and Anquet are far more fit for purpose but use the same OS data.
Used it for almost 20 months with no problems on my computer. While a little clunky I was able to generate walk maps and print them when required. The app has stopped working on my computer - no maps only a box with " your browser does not support Mapbox GL". Will work on my phone but using the larger printer screen computer allows more clarity and the end product can be printed off.
Bought a map for a walking tour in England and received a code to download the map to this app. This is great! No more messing about with a map case and refolding the map! I wish I'd had this on previous walks. Just keep an eye on your battery, especially if you are recording your route. The only improvement I might suggest would be an option to show a compass rose centered on the user.
Authentication broken Straight away I immediately had a problem that the standard Android "suggest password" box didn't come up when registering in-app. I got around this by registering online, but I am unable to log in to my account as it seems they have deliberately blocked the password manager integration within the app as every other app works fine. I spent nearly an hour trying to get around this, but in the end I gave up.
Been using the app for months to plan and follow hikes. I still carry a paper map around in case of emergencies, but I haven't used it since installing the app. The app is just so much more convenient. One feature I would like to see is the ability to add nodes/waypoints anywhere on a route, rather than just at the end. I'm surprised to see so many people having performance issues with the app. For me it starts up instantly, has never crashed and doesn't excessively drain my battery (Pixel 5).
