Reviews for Oxford Dictionary & Thesaurus

Worst dictionary app I have ever use. To be able to read the definition of a word you're looking for, I need to either watch an ad or buy for "Premium". Yes, there's a paywall to use a dictionary. Offline access is also behind a paywall too, so if you don't have a good signal, good luck. Plus, there's an ad banner at the bottom of the screen which guarantees ad revenue for the developers, so this just comes across as penny pinching. Just go to the site or use Google instead. Abysmal!

This is NOT a free dictionary as it is described! Even the fine print in the agreements (yes I read all of them) doesn't mention that it's not a for free service. It's not until you've installed it read the agreements and then hit start that you find out there's a three-day trial and thena renewal fee of $19. 99 unless you give them 24 hours notice of the intend to cancel. Beware!

Was really looking fwd to just reading a dictionary. Weird, yeah, but fun. Didn't realize this wasn't a free app, unless you don't mind blaring ads every time you click something. Idk... dictionaries and all their benefits should be free and w/o ads. Uninstalled within 2 minutes. Glad theres a lifetime of free usage just seems weird with ads. I'll look for something else, or carry my dictionary with me. Just thought phone app would be easier.

Response: I know it's difficult to maintain a reliable dictionary, but you too should be aware of the market around you. Try staying up to date, maybe change how the business runs. Its either ads or subscription, but your app is useless without a subscription yet somehow still contains ads. Worse off is the functionality hasn't changed much since the first time I used it back in 2014. With time, you might only be left with older customers unaware of better deals, no new ones.

Tried this despite the bad reviews, it kept demanding I get a subscription or free trial thereof or it couldn't be used "online." the words I looked up (ones I'm already familiar with and have looked up in a physical dictionary but wanted to refresh my memory without needing to get it out, because it's huge) And this app didn't know the words! Sure words like perspacity are not comon anymore but seriously?! This is supposed to be a way to learn what you don't already know or it's pointless!

Update Sep 2024 - still getting ads. Saying "sorry for the inconvenience caused" and doing nothing to fix it is bad customer service. Cancelled subscription. Update Jun 2024: Almost every time I tap the word of the day in the notification panel, it shows a pop up ad. I've had the app for several months. It is still a problem. Original: Ads in paid subscription 😞 I go to word of the day, and it shows an ad with loud audio. This is unacceptable in a $20 / year subscription for a dictionary.

Noisy pop-up advertising is a great irritation when you are searching for a word while sitting in the library. Daily words are almost entirely useless, usually pertaining to random fish or other items that will come up rarely in life. I would think they could work out an algorithm to make daily words more pertinent or common. It does receive stars at all because it does have a decent amount of words for which I search. However, even here, I sometimes find that it is not on par with online OED.

Overall a really good app. I use it regularly and love that it can be used offline if you choose to download a dictionary. I also use the pronunciation feature. Excited that they just updated the UI and added access to more dictionaries to my purchase. Would like more detailed etymologies but I realize that's outside the scope of what I paid for. Was tempted to dock 1 star for only having a random instead of curated word of the day, but I don't think that's enough to amount to a whole star.

I really love your oxford Russian-English dictionary, and I'd have no problem buying this app, but it looks like there's only a subscribe button. I know that subscriptions mean more consistent income, but I hate ads, and I hate "poking holes" in the bottom of my already thin wallet. I'd much prefer to pay once up-front for a version now and pay for an updated edition in the future. Please let me know if I'm missing a non-subscription option!

To many options. Example: affect(1), affect(2), or affect(3). I want affect(1,2,&3) in one option. I like the files, but they are no good to me if I have to add three words to get what I want instead of just one. Who wants to click, look, back up, click, look, back up, etc. just to find what thay want. I'd rather click, look, scroll, 💡!. Also be good if you added a spot for things like homophones instead of only nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc..

Whenever the dictionary would update, all of the words in my favorites list would link to the wrong word. This happened to me twice. First time, I reported the issue and contacted support. They couldn't fix it, so I just went one by one and fixed each word. It just happened again, and now I have nearly 200 words in my list, and chose to uninstall instead of wasting my time knowing it will probably happen again. That being said, the dictionary itself is good.

only thing though of you are using the APP for free, you will see a couple seconds of ads where you can exit from on top right side corner. (android user). Also, this happens everytime you exit out of it and go back to it. after that, you can keep using it. aside from the ads, very convinent for me. if you are a person who needs vocabulary words because of work or school, consider paying for app. happy searches! (ノ゜ー゜)ノ

Although the print version of this dictionary is quite good, the app is another story. Basically, the company is overly greedy. Not only is the app filled with intrusive advertising, the ads are created to be as annoying and obstructionist as possible to manipulate users into shelling out money for the paid version. I honestly would not mind paying for a quality dictionary app, but then they expect you to pay an additional $15 annually? It's exorbitant and outrageous. You certainly wouldn't have such an unreasonable stipulation for the print version of the dictionary!

This was a great dictionary tool. I started using it for the definitions and the etymologys. Word of the day too. I liked it so much I paid a little over $5 for it a couple years ago. I thought that was supposed to support the app, keep me free of ads, and support the offline dictionary. Apparently my payment has lost its value, because now I'm getting hit with Temu ads every time I open The app. Usually when apps go to ads they grandfather in those who paid. This doesn't bode well.

The number of ads the free version has is ridiculous. I understand that a free service must have ads, but displaying an ad nearly everytime I search for a word is obnoxious. Plus the entry pages could be easier to read and lag when scrolling. $20 a year isn't much but even that is top much to ask for this app. On the plus side the definitions are clear and concise.

The quality of the Oxford English dictionary is of course well known, but without the full version you will see ads every 5 or so words. If you're not an avid dictionary reader like me that's probably fine, but I couldn't stand it (bought full). One marked issue I have is that the "Word of the Day" is completely random. There is no thoughtfulness behind the words chosen (as on the official website, which actually has its own distinct WotD), and you can get random words yourself a number of ways.

I'm afraid I have to agree with others recently. I don't want to sound like a cheapskate, but I can very easily type "define (word)" into google. Perhaps there isn't as much information there, but 99 times out of a hundred people just want the definition and some examples, not the etymology. Besides, you can also just google "etymology of (word)" if you want more information. I would say go for this app if you're a student of language, but it isn't practical for casual use.

It's, quite obviously, useful in a great number of different ways. Spell checking and definitions clearly being the top of the list. The pronunciation assistance has been the most primarily useful one, though, for my family. We have (myself not included - I just watch and listen) arguments and disagreements over such that have, in the past, lasted for months! So, yes, this is nothing less than perfect for those in need of a dictionary service.

too many ads. ** edit to reply devs:** I understand there is a way to remove ads. However, I like to try the product out first to see if I want to buy the full version, but because of the amount of ads I am unwilling to try it for long enough to want to buy premium. :) Previous subscription apps I've purchased in the past had fewer ad interuptions "for free", ensuring I had a pleasant experience to want to pay for premium. I hope that helps explain!

Subscription model, no. I've downloaded the app with the idea of paying for a copy. Sadly there's no one time payment option. I want to decide if I need an updated version afterwards or not. I pay once and have my Dictionary with me for good. If I decide to have an updated version, I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee for that. But not a monthly/yearly subscription as the only option.
