I don't know what to think. But, not having any kind of text on the numerous buttons is NUTS!!!! what... I need to downloadca cheat sheet to know what the button means?..... Oh... importing files.... oh... you have to email them to yourself .... the word import is only found in the user guide associated with "backup"... I don't want to restore from a back up I want to import a new (to my stuff) file. If you need a user guide for that... it needs more work.
Reviews for PhotoPills
← Back to PhotoPillsI've used this app for at least five years and it is perfect for planning photo shoots around heavenly bodies. I use it all the time for planning Milky Way shots. It has saved me countless hours of manually figuring out all the details of a MW shoot. Also the AR feature really comes in handy when scouting a location ahead of a night shoot.
Would be much better if it could access Street View and give you an idea of where the Milky Way would be in relation to any specific location. That is what I thought it did and most of the reason I purchased the app, my mistake I guess, so I imagine it's not a feature due to licensing/copyright issues. Oh well, at least I can see where the core is on the map wherever I drop a pin.
This is a fantastic photo tool. What is packed into this app is incredible. And the online support through the PhotoPills website is comprehensive. Quite a few of my close photography friends purchased the app after they saw how easy it was for me to get info as well as long-range planning. I lost track of how many times I've used this app to plan a photo shoot. I don't have the words to express how great the PhotoPills app id.
I think this app definitely makes astrophotography and sunrise/sunset shooting a lot easier. a couple of things that could take this app to the next level: 1. adding star trails into AR night mode, so we can know and plan how the streaks would look like according to the level of exposure we set. 2. adding a light-pollution map and also using it's data to calculate the Galaxy Center visibility (similar to how you do it with the moon). Nice app overall :) Update : Thanks for the response.
Exceptional app. As close to essential for astrophotography as you can get. Saves time (and disappointment) by getting you into the ballpark for settings right away, meaning you just have to finesse for local peculiarities rather than start from scratch. Spend more time on composition and getting that absolutely pinpoint focus, and less on shutterspeed etc because the app nails it for you. Also great for nailing the SCP in the Southern Hemisphere, where there is no Pole Star. Five stars.
This is all you need and more to plan an take a nice shot. On the map, you can even simulate a certain focal length and see if you can fit the subject in the frame. Besides all the tools one can imagine, like live view, map view, simulate the moon, sun and milky way positions at any time, you have DOF calculator, and if you use 2 cameras (a full frame and a crop sensor) you can compare the focal lengths on both. It has loads of articles and video tutorials of how to do anything. It's a steal!
As others have said, a compatible version on the PC would be great. I've had no complaint with this app as of yet. I really like the charts for exposure and hyperfocal points. Again, a PC friendly interface would make this FIVE stars for me. Until then, only 4. Also, if it would include tide tables, that would make this a real all in one go to app.
Thanks for the the stunning tool! If I may, I would like to ask for a flash guide number calculator. I do release that strobes and speedlights are not frequently used by landscape photographers, but such tools would be indispensable for portraiture, because TTL is not widely used for off-camera flashes. Most of the time it is all done manually.
Really helpful app! Now I don't need to manually calculate the elevation of the sun and moon when I know where I want to stand, and what forground element I want. And best part is when it shows when the moon or sun will be there. However one tiny issue (which might be my fault). I have not found a setting for the date format. Would be really nice to be able to use whats default in my country.
Good app. I did have issues installing it on multiple devices, mainly my phone and my tablet, but I logged out of Google and back in again and got it working. Now to learn how best to use it and plan some trips. Addendum: I took my first milky way pictures last weekend thanks to Photo Pills and they came out rather well. Now planning my next trip on the weekend, assuming the clouds leave the sky😁.
The best photography app available, most particularly because of ZERO ads and there's no paywall to all of the features! To the developers, thank you!
It has been a very useful tool when planning my compositions. I have had no issues and find the tutorials informative!
Map doesn't work with location permission turned off, (map is totally blank), even if your current location is irrelevant because you're planning to photograph somewhere else. UPDATE: As suggested by PhotoPills clearing the Google play service cache fixed it, so not an issue with their app. Thx.
Photographers often move their hand to feel sunlight direction — what if AR mode had a live sensor glow or brightness feedback as the user enters stronger light? That would make real-world light scouting incredibly intuitive.” then photographer can place the subject for different lighting patterns as per suns intensity and brightness. if you add this feature it will be a valuable tool for all photographers scouting for sun light path/pattern....sujay
Great program, it's improved my milky way photography so much! And it has so many other useful tools. They have great YouTube videos. But what I learned is they have great tech help. Had a problem with my AR, found them on Facebook and that I could message them which I did and was able to msg with them about my issue. They were patient and had me go through some tests and was able to figure what the problem was. So impressed! Best $9.99 I ever spent!
Great app (shame it can't control the clouds!!!!!). I have a few similar apps for Moon, Sun position etc, but this has far more detail available. One feature I'd like to have (it may be there but I cannot find it), would be the ability to go into Street view or Google Earth then use the AR view, over the top of Street View. So you can identify great shots, without having to be there.
This App is fantastic, and a time saver for planning extraordinary moon, and star photography. There is quite a learning curve though, so if you are a grab and go kind of person, this may lend to some frustration for you. Luckily there are plenty of excellet tutorial videos from the developer and other photographers. What would add to the magic is if this App were accessible on Windows desktop. It is much easier to plan an event on a larger screen. Photopills, can you make that happen?
Been looking for a photo app for a while that pretty much does it all. And this is the one. So many wonderful features, especially for landscape photographers. So much of making a good landscape image is about planning and being able to imagine what the shot will look like before you take it. This app contains all the planning tools you'll need to capture your perfect shot. Love the milky way augmented reality. It's a game changer.
I love the tools in this app however am extremely disappointed that there is no way from the developer to not have to pay 9.99 twice when switching devices. I use Adobe on my mac and PC products I see no reason that I shouldn't just have a photo pills login to use what I paid for on an android and iPhone. 10 bucks may not seem like much, but when you purchase something you assume you've purchased it and won't have to again.
