Never took the time the time to review an app before but this is one is so cool that I have to. 5 stars because of the concept, keeps me more engaged with real life learning about the thousands of species of insects in the world. I love adding pictures too it and expanding my collection, my younger cousins say it's like pokemon in real life. Only complaint is the in app camera takes a while to load, but if you take pictures with your own camera and upload them in it works amazingly.
Reviews for Picture Insect: Bug Identifier
← Back to Picture Insect: Bug IdentifierThe app works well and it great! ... save for one detail. The "begin your free trial of primium," pops up WAY too often and I almost accidentally accept it every time because it genuienley shows up out of nowhere. There should be a "do not show again," button. If someone genuienley wants premium, they'll buy it. But for someone who keeps declining it- take a hint!
Didn't realize it wasnt a free app, which is unfortunate because I would keep it downloaded, but no way I'm paying $25/month for this. BUT, it came with a 7 day free trial, and it was able to identify the bug I needed, so it did the job. but am cancelling the subscription before it charges me. 4 stars because of the high price. $5 a month, ok sure. but $25? that's too much.
I used it for 6 months and it was okay, but now it freezes up when I try to upload a photo, and I am being asked to subscribe to a free trial or "continue with limited version." The "continue with limited version" button does not work It is impossible to initiate a free trial without credit card information being retained. And I don't trust Google. I do not think it is accurate enough to charge $19.95/year. 50% accuracy in my experience.
Don't call it free if you can't access ANYthing w/o a subscription. Even giving a short trial would give us some idea if your product is worth paying for MONTHLY, (not a reasonable 1 time fee) so we can see if it works, or if its just like your sister app, plant identification. Which, coincidentally, I DID pay for, yet it helped me identify 0% of searched plants. Just take a picture and Google lens it like I did, which was free, easy, and took less time than downloading a waste of time.
There must have been some updates bc the app is free to use. I've been using it free and it has correctly identified the 3 spiders I submitted a picture of. Yes, it does pop up an ad to subscribe when I open the app but I just simply hit back and it goes back to the main screen. Also, I saw other people in the reviews saying it's like $25 a month, but on my app it's $3 a week, $6 a month, or $30 for a year (which equals out to $2.5/month) so that price update is excellent.
I like the app, but it does tend to be inaccurate. There used to be a cool feature where you could browse insects people around you had found on a map, but theyve removed it. There was also a feature where you could ask everyone for ID help, which was fun. I wish they would come back. A location feature would be nice to check for insects found in your area. I am in Germany and get false IDs for bugs not in europe. I do like the app overall tho.
The app is very good at its main job of identifying bugs. Sometimes when there are many similar species it doesn't get it exactly right or even have them all in their database, so you have to pull in other sources when a 100% sure ID is important. This would be a 5 star app if they improved the collecting aspect of the interface. I'd love the ability to add notes as well as tags or create albums. Also, ID correction seems to go into a blackhole and does not update the title in your collection.
I've used it for years and have accumulated quite the impressive collection. Bugs are usually easily identified, though the more miniscule insects (freckle sized or smaller) are harder for the algorithms to identify unless you have a super good camera. I rate it five stars because it's an incredibly reliable thingy. Though I don't like that it requires wifi, I can understand why.
Spot on... so far it's identified everything I've thrown at it and it does so pretty dang fast! It also has a pretty impressive amount of amplifying information for each "bug" you identify. It's simple & straightforward; it does everything it says it can do and even a little more. $20 a year is a pittance compared to the knowledge it delivers almost instantly. I love it... Great download! 👍
I really like the app. Upon closing, I wish that the app would allow you to leave something as unidentified when you're unsure of the actual identification out of the choices given. I also wish that the app would show more stages in the growth cycles of the bugs that you're trying to identify. Other than those two things, I think that the app is an awesome tool.
Update: the in-app camera is very slow and unresponsive. It takes 2-3 seconds for the camera to actually take a picture and by then, the insect has usually moved or the camera loses focus; both result in a blurry image and poor results. It makes using the app frustrating. It's awesome when you do get a good picture though! It's fun discovering the bugs around you!
Great idea! Bad execution. Love everything about this! I just wish you could add more then one picture especially. It would make identification easier. Sometimes one angle just isn't enough. Also being able to give a description with each photo could be helpful as well. Since some cameras aren't the greatest. Maybe a "other defining features" option where posters can verify the colors or anatomy of the insect if the camera can't quite get it all in its glory. Otherwise love the app!
I absolutely love bugs and insects (and this app). It is almost always completely on point (I have the free version, so not sure if that makes a difference) and is more specific than other apps I've tried which are more generalized. The only thing I wish is that we could take pictures offline and save them to search when we're online again. I don't currently have a phone plan so I run on wifi, but I'm always seeing so many insects I want to learn about on the go.
Great idea, but the app needs work. It seems fixated on everything being based in Europe or Asia, so many of the IDs I receive as potentials are wrong (I'm based in the US). I wish you could set the app up by region so you get insects, moths, butterflies for your area (continent, country). If something unidentified is incorrect/unknown, that should be an option instead of being asked to correct the ID. It's helpful sometimes, but most IDs I receive aren't close to being in my region.
Trying your app now. I just have 1 problem with a reply to a comment made by a user. You said that all apps do free trials the way you do. Charge the user automatically after the free trial is up. All the apps I have installed on my device doesn't do it that way and I have a lot. After the trial is up, then it goes back to the free version unless you opt to keep the premium. Yours charges automatically, I do not agree with doing it your way and will be uninstalling. This is a trick to get money!
Careful when first opening this app! There are two (yeah, 2) pop ups pushing the "7 day free trial". If you click the "start trial" button and agree to the subscription, even if you uninstall it, it will charge you $29.99 for the year. Click the X in the top right hand corner (of any popups), it'll then be free to use. The free version works great. It's just lame that they have to use such tricky tactics to get subscriptions. Don't fall for it. Be vigilant when DLing apps or you'll get screwed.
I love this app. Today, I was checking on some insects I'd photographed as well as a new one I found, and I thought, "I should just go ahead and buy this and support them." So I went to purchase, and unfortunately, all the options are subscriptions. I can't justify a subscription for an app I use less than once a month. But, if y'all ever want to offer a one-time premium upgrade for a decent price, I'm in!
for the free version this app is awesome. well on identification it's pretty decent but you really got a get a good, up close pic for proper identification. otherwise the IDs can be pretty varied. but where the free version lacks is you really don't get much info on what you're IDing. but considering it's a free version (since they allegedly don't sell your data😉) it's not bad at all. I use it a fair amount. thanks folks !
This identifying app for insects works well for most bugs. It doesn't, however, always correctly identify them despite the various angles. Most insects don't like the frequencies found in a phone's camera (science behind this statement won't fit in the comment section, so look it up!). As a result, the insects tend to move away before I am able to snap the perfect angle or take multiple shots. I changed my 2 star to a 3 star as it is still the best option for this kind of app on Android devices.
