Ahhh yes, let's ask what your conversational level is, then talk above that and only offer you limited translations into your native language for free so we can coax you into buying the premium subscription so you can unlock the last 95% on the app's functions. Given that I get Busuu for $35/year, paying almost triple the price for this is a ripoff, especially with how predatory this model is. Edit (6/7/25): I was unable to complete pay the second lesson without a paywall. That's not free.

it looked really interesting and promising from the ads and going through the setup, but while I follow the setup instructions exactly, it immediately started speaking to me in Portuguese like I was supposed to understand what it was saying. It said there were 20 tutors to choose from, but only offered five; I didn't really like any of them, but just picked one.

This is an amazing idea and in some point it will be a five-star rating. But for now it's a miss. I was using it for Japanese and some of the pronunciations I was doing were dead on as I have experience in the language but I like to start at the beginning of an app, but the app couldn't pick it up such as oo versus ew. Plus some of the reading of Japanese are hilarious. Kare カレー it's Ka Reh not "care." I will be following for more updates but currently it's only teaching me incorrect things now.

Not beginner friendly. I really wanted to use this app but sadly it's just not beginner friendly. I learned a little Japanese in college and wanted to get back into it. But they speak only in full on sentences in that said language. So unless you know how to drive a conversation you won't get far with this. I think it wouldn't be bad if you need to speak to someone in the native language and keep up conversational skills. But for straight up learning from the start, this isn't it.

I want to like this app. I'm trying to learn Korean, and my level is A1. However, even when I switch my native language to English and set the tutor to speak in English, it will only say one or two phrases, then immediately switch back just to speaking full sentences in Korean and expecting me to be able to do the same, which is not helpful for a beginner because I don't have the vocabulary. So it's not really beginner friendly.

You start learning very rapidly and are expected to have perfect recall. It's very difficult for learning languages with another alphabet -- I'm learning Japanese, and the tutor speaks in hiragana instead of romaji. You have to pay for many features ($100/year), including different accents. I wanted to learn French with a Canadian accent, but could only do a European accent with the free version. Overall the app seems a bit clunky and hard to navigate.

The beginning was great, but for some reason none of the Google Play pop ups for the app work, so I can't subscribe even if I wanted to, or log in with my Google account when I hit login with Google my account pops up, but won't let me tap on anything. I never had that problem with other apps before, and I made sure to close all other apps that were open just in case Google play was being used somewhere else and no dice.

Not good for beginners. The tutors speak in full the entire time without every responding to any requests for them to slow down or repeat themselves in your native language. I personally chose Spanish and have never spoken Spanish outside of basic DuoLingo. After trying for almost a week to get the tutors to speak at my level I'm going back to DuoLingo so I can learn at the level I need to before being given entire conversations to guess at.

Am still shopping around for language apps that are Not Duolingo. The initial setup was challenging for me, but there were suggested replies to respond with back to the AI. I struggled but it did not correct me and setup went through. Then I chose the 7 day trial and quite enjoyed it. lessons were structured. vowels, numbers, verb usage of 'to be'. My AI tutor speaks in English with german accent and teaches lessons in mix of English and german. you can adjust their speech speed as well.

I'm learning German right now, and this is a pretty great app. I love how I am able to ask the AI tutor anything, and he helps me with it and breaks literally every single thing down for me and will do it as many times as needed! I also love the correction that's given. If I say something a bit off or just plain wrong, he corrects it and helps me write it and also speak it until perfected! that's so dope. I also love the encouragement. also has great memory. What a wonderful app. thank you!
