So far works great, and I'd like to buy the free version in the future once the kinks are worked out. For example, I'd like an "undo" when I accidentally archive an email (Gmail has this) and some kind of color indicator for the emails sent to me (like a solid-color profile picture for automated emails) instead of black-and-white.
Reviews for Proton Mail: Encrypted Email
← Back to Proton Mail: Encrypted EmailSimilar to many other users - the new app is rife with issues. Emails won't load, won't send, won't send notifications etc. And then sometimes it will. I have been a long time paid customer and want to continue to support this great company. However, the new issues have been going on for long enough that it's becoming very frustrating to the point of wanting to cancel the service.
I updated the app several months ago and wish I hadn't. Now it's so glitchy I basically can't use it on my phone at all. Anytime I try to send an email or reply to one it takes forever to send it. In the meantime, several drafts of the email in varying stages of being written are being saved to my drafts folder. And the best part - the one that actually goes to the intended recipient is frequently not the finished version. Wish I could go back to the previous version. Sick of it!!
Service is excellent, the Android app needs some improvements, like when you search on the inbox for multiple messages from the same sender, once your query is complete, if you wanted to delete them all at once you can't, the "select all or multiple messages at once" feature doesn't work on a search query. You can only tap one at a time. Defeats the purpose of being able to search.
You can no longer hold down on emails to copy the address or click to see contact details, which is inconvenient as I frequently used the copy and paste option. The clustering of emails together is annoying, and there are frequent issues with emails not sending. Overall, the update is confusing and awkward, they should have kept it the way it was.
I have been a paid subscriber for several years and have felt secure with it. I just increased my subscription to the DUO option (I wanted the Business, but the option disappeared when it came time to order.) I don't like that the VPN is an additional cost on top of the $170/yr. I am in the USA and it connects me to other countries, which creates more problems than it solves, making it useless for me. I think the ability to switch servers should be included, if at all possible.
Good, but has persistent bugs. One example is when I get a notification for an email, it will take me to the wrong email in a thread. For instance, food order emails get threaded, and sometimes when I click the notification, it opens the email from months or years ago instead of the most recent. It's been an issue for years.
Overall a very good app. bringing my personal domain email over was very easy. I am missing being able to set up rules to process incoming mail. (thanks for the tip on your reply!) edit. I'm now seeing battery drain that I didn't notice before, looks like it is showing up as the screen being on even though the phone has been dark for hours.
This is technically such a small issue that I've avoided writing a review about it for a long time, but it's driving me nuts so here I am. lol I really wish the popup for "moved to trash" didn't cover the bottom bar and make it so you have to wait until it disappears to use any other buttons. It makes it so you can't sort things quickly because the bar is unusable until it goes away.
The app is functional. It does basic tasks but for the price I expected some bells & whistles. I can't do templates for frequent repeat emails, and this is my business account. There are no tabs for sorting emails, just inbox and spam options. You can't view documents you save in the cloud, you have to download them just to look at them, so that function does not help me at all. I have been using this app for years, so I had hoped it would of caught up to gmail by now.
It's only ok. The search doesn't work at all for me on 4.13.0 (there don't seem to be any newer versions available to update to on this device). This makes it mostly unusable for me. The search works on the mobile version of the website though! You also can't select all emails, or edit folders/labels on the app while you can on the mobile website. I also wish you could edit filters like on the desktop site, and swipe left and right between emails like you can with most mobile email clients.
Wouldn't unlock my email for " abuse detected from third party sources" despite adding a recovery email and later after creation a phone number so I'm pretty sure it just wanted me to pay $0.99 for it to unlock and be able to verify an account I added. just useless to me and that's fine. I'm sure it's a good service and I've heard good things about it it's just annoying, when you follow the instructions and you get nothing for it in the end.
This has been my primary email for years, but I have to consider switching. In recent months I have to be very careful with sending an email from the phone app because if I don't remain in the app until I get the "message sent" pop up then it will not actually send my email for several hours or until I open the app again later. Also the syncing between desktop and phone app is very bad and if I am taking time working on a draft between both and eventually send, it may send the wrong draft
Newest version is not good. Might show you have an email but good luck finding it since the folders no longer indicate they have new unread email. 34 emails this morning and had to go to all mail to find them. In that folder shows unread but not in their folder/label or the inbox. Most the time you don't even get notified you have mail anymore. Disappointing.
Its just usable. It has lots of really dumb features that you cannot opt out of. Such as, after some time off clicking on an email it will snap up to the top of that email with no input from your end, combined with the fact that it will also put you on the oldest unread email in the chain by default you have to continuously fight the app just to read your email if you have any unread emails in a chain.
I love Proton and am an Unlimited subscriber, but this new mail app (while being a little faster) looks terrible IMHO. Instead of seeing 10 emails at a glance with lines separating each email, on the new version I can only see 6 at a time because everything is so spaced out. Previously, the annoying sender initials/profile picture boxes were at least small and all the same color. Now, they're huge and all random colors unless someone has uploaded a profile photo! Please let us toggle those off!
I have loved this app until now. the most recent changes make it nearly impossible to respond to an email on my phone. It keeps snapping the view to the end of the original message while I'm still typing my response at the top. I can't see what I'm typing! When I navigate back to my cursor, the view snaps down again. It's fine on my chromebook, but on my phone it's useless.
Unusable With Newest Update. I don't know what they did to change the app but I cannot touch anything in it anymore, it just pops up with a 'welcome to protonmail' even though I've been using it for years and it takes up half the screen and won't disappear. I cannot access my emails, I can't send emails or anything to support, all I can do is barely see my emails behind the welcome pop-up so this app has become unusable to me. I hope the PC version works or I'll have to find a new email platform
Great app, only one flaw. There's no way to opt out of conversation mode. I'm not a fan of conversation mode in general but this get more annoying when an email shows as unread after you opened it because of the 29th out of 50 emails you never opened in the chain. It also gets confusing if you are trying to take a quick look at your email and accidentally tap on the wrong email in the chain. Other than that, the app does what it's supposed to.
Slooooow. Even with a stable network at full bars, it takes ~5 seconds to open an email, and ~3 to go back to my inbox, and then another 5 seconds for that email to be marked as read. Feels like 2FA emails take longer than other apps to come through, like a minute or more. Desktop version is slightly faster, but not by much. Disappointed, as it's a service I pay for. One thing that might help is the ability to swipe through emails, rather than having to tap into them and back out.
