This is a nice app overlay for Google maps, but don't trust it for avoiding truck restricted areas. Twice it tried to navigate me through weight and length restricted areas that my Garmin 770 warned me of in advance, one would have been a $2500 fine. No navigation is perfect and you have to use your experience and smarts. I prefer using my Garmin and Google maps together. Not sure if I'm willing to shell out the extra money for this one. For the most part it worked well. Paid for 1 month to see.
Reviews for SmartTruckRoute 2 Nav & IFTA
Been using this for 4 years. Love the satellite view option for scouting destinations. Also useful for showing scales and many truckstops. It can get you in trouble if you dont do your homework ahead of time. Just figured out how to use the alternate route feature. Key is never rely 100% on a GPS to stay out of trouble. Good value vs dedicated trucker GPS units.
Great app, however lane guidance is usually wrong (%40 wrong unfortunately). Otherwise I like using this app because I think, so far, this is as good as it gets as android truck navigation apps are concerned. This helps me avoid having the clutter of another screen in my sight while driving. I prefer a cellphone because if you buy a high quality phone it is less likely to be slow and prone to freezing and shutting down. Standalone navigation devices are one trick ponies and don't seem worth it.
I've been using this app for the past 3 years, and so far, it's the best. Don't waste your money on Garmin or Rand McNally. I've used both. Smart truck route is the best. The only thing I wish they would add is a 3rd choice for a route. Sometimes it will route you through a town just to get back on the highway which may be shorter in mileage but takes longer because of traffic and lights. I just stay on the highway, and it will reroute again.
Best truck navigation app out there and I've tried them all. Better than the dedicated hardware units from Rand McNally and Garmin. That said, there's room for improvement. Voice navigation is either too much or too little that you can miss your exit because it waits to the last second to tell you. I wish it followed Google Maps' implementation of voice navigation. It's neither too little nor too much. That's my biggest complaint, but there are other minor improvements that could be made.
We use this Truck GPS as we travel with a large RV. It is great because we can input our height and length measurements and this GPS has never steered us wrong (pun intended). I love that we can see elevations, wind alerts and truck stops. This app keeps getting better and better as they make updates and I like that they give me a notification on when something has changed and how to use the new feature. Just renewed another year as we really find this service useful.
Version 2 has too much going on. The bottom info bar is crowding the screen. Why do I need a speedometer and odometer on my GPS when I have one on my truck. This one has too much information at the same time. Version 1 has the same info available but I can display it as I need it. More isn't necessary better. Also this version is a big drain on my battery even while it's plugged in. Another thing is that I can't set the brightness of it and there is no zoom in/out button. Update 11/27/18: OK after alot of updates now I love it.
I've been using the OG for the last six months or so. This version is definitely smoother operating. Gotta be careful though, I've had it put me on weight restricted roads fairly often, and a couple times it's missed a low clearance and I've had to back up quite a ways. I don't think any of them are perfect tho and this is the best price.
I have it set at "quickest" (which is the default.) Even though I've been on these highways for over 15yrs, I'm just coming back out on the road after a 5 year break and I see how technology has enhanced OTR driving. You have a good app, but it is not reliable for 18 wheelers to use the routes that your app gives to get from the highway going directly through the city. Trust me, tight turns and operating heavy equipment doesn't mix. City driving isn't designed for heavy trucks unless there is no other alternative to get in there. Tech support are 5 stars! They are on it.
I like the app, I just wish that the exit and miles left shown in upper left hand corner were a bit bigger... I use the app on my phone, but even sideways view, its a bit difficult to make out the exit/street name and miles left. Also, ran into a bug on the app, while trying to take off a stop along the route, it wouldn't come off, I had to type in another address and then reset. What would be amazing is a compass on the screen showing what direction the truck is going in.
