Latest update makes the free version non-functional unless you only have 3 expenses per day. I set up a new group for a recent weekend trip with multiple people. Expenses entered went into a separate non-group list as well as the group list and cannot be consolidated. I would have paid before the trip if limitations were understood. Now our expense inputs are a mess. The free version is essentially useless. Not willing to pay after the trip to see if that will sort it out. Back to spreadsheets.
Reviews for Splitwise
← Back to SplitwiseUsed to be such an amazing app, it was simple but effective. Now, they limit the number of transactions you can add on there if you're a free user. For how essential of an app this used to be, I wouldn't have minded a 1-time unlock fee to get access to unlimited transactions. The subscription gives you access to a whole bunch of (in my opinion) junk. No one was subscribing before and no one still is. Charge me $20 for unlimited transactions forever and it's a done deal. Got to go look elsewhere.
No longer free, and $5/mo is unreasonably pricey for the service offered, especially considering every member of the group must have their own subscription. It still works like it always has, but only with the required subscription. Because Splitwise has been good and free (with ads) for so long, there hasn't been many competitors. That's changing, and I strongly suggest considering an alternative before starting your next Splitwise group.
It is a great app to track expenses between roommates. I've been using it for years. My biggest complaint is they've recently added ads for their pro version whenever you add an expense. This slows down the main feature of the app and adds an unnecessary inconvenience to just try and get you to buy pro. Disappointing after using it for nearly 4 years now.
Love this app for tracking and splitting expenses with others. That would have been a 5-star rating. Absolutely appalled at how inconvenient and inefficient the payment process is. They take the payer's $$ right away and then it takes multiple steps and many days for the payee to receive the funds. On top of that, there is a weekly limit for "withdrawal" of funds, allowing them to hang onto the funds even longer. Our first AND LAST TIME using the payment feature. Settle up outside of the app!
This app has the functionality to track a trip, I've loved using it for years now. But recently, they have gone downhill, including too many unnecessary features, 10 sec ad breaks, and limited the amount of expenses you can add per day to four. All the pain has been created to drive you to their subscription offering. If this app was a one-off payment, I would do it, but a monthly subscription is not worth it. Recommend finding another app.
I've used this app for more than a decade but I don't think I will anymore - they keep imposing more and more restrictions if you don't pay for Pro - now you can only add 3 expenses per day and have to sit through a 10 second ad for Pro first!? no thanks! I'll just go back to using good old fashioned spreadsheets. Took something great, got too greedy, and ruined it.
This app used to be so useful. Now it's unusable without paying for splitwise pro. You can add only 3 expenses per day and you have to watch an ad for splitwise pro, before you can add the 3 expenses. And after 3, you can't add any more at all without paying. Really really disappointed with this change. It used to be free to use all of the functional features. Splitwise pro is in my opinion unreasonably priced, at $5 a month or $40/year. Going to go try Settle Up.
Used to be good, now literal trash. I've had this app for years and it used to be amazing. But at this point everything is hidden behind paywalls and if you don't want to deal with that it severely limits you. 10 sec. ad pauses before entering any expense, very small limit on how many times you can enter per day, and now you can't even pay each other in the app. I used to be able to do all of these things without limit or charge. And it glitches out a lot. I'll be deleting this.
What a great app for tracking and splitting funds up, so brilliant if you go away with friends etc, cannot imagine not using it now. It doesn't matter who pays for what or when or even in whatever currency, then you can split each and everything individually at whatever split you want, sound complex but it's beautifully simple. Fantastic app, great user interface as well. You do pay for the pro version, I tend to buy a month only when I'm going on a trip, worth every penny / cent.
Not impressed. Took almost 2 weeks for Splitwise to make payment to those I owed even though I paid what I owed right away & my account was debited on day 1 (there was plenty in my account to cover the withdrawal). I felt like it made it seem that I was slow in paying, which I never am. I would refuse to use Splitwise again, & make other arrangements. Couldn't wait to delete this app.
Very good! Just one big issue for me. The app requires all participants in an expense to have an account, making it difficult to track debts and credits with non-users. A proposed solution is to allow the creation of "placeholder" profiles for individuals who are not on the app, enabling manual logging of expenses, such as a loan to a friend. This feature could also be used to track payments to entities like landlords or utility companies.
Initially, one of the best apps out there for financing group trips. Unfortunately, with the new in-app forced purchases it is no longer worth using. Any app that punishes you for using it (you can only add 3 expenses per day), should not be supported. If you release an app, never take away the base features or hide them behind a pay wall. Let us have the app you gave us, and add features that make upgrading optional, or let us add features a la carte. Shame, $40/year to add 3+ expenses/day
The free version has limited functionality (max 4 expenses a day, splitwise pay withdrawal limits). I don't mind paying for an app that works well, but they only offer subscription, no one time payment for app. Since I use splitwise 1-2 times a year I have to pay each time, not going to support that nonsense.
Been paying for the PRO plan for over a year or so and have gotten some good usage out of it, but the updates are rather stale and there still have not been featured updates that are constantly requested. The fact that we STILL can't scan a digital receipt is ridiculous! All receipts require you to take a picture of it to itemize but we live in a digital world and almost all receipts are digital now! Let us upload screenshots to itemize!
I have never loved Splitwise for group travel because people insist on it when a simple Google sheet is easier and more adaptable. With its new "pay" feature, I like it even less. No I don't want another payments app. Yes some women on my trip paid me through Splitwise before I could stop them. Yes I will be deleting both my account info and the app immediately and insisting on using anything but splitwise moving forward.
Was a pretty great app for tracking. Emphasis on WAS. Now you can only add a handful of expenses before they lock you out and require their "Pro" subscription. They also make you wait a 10 second timer before adding each expense unless you have "Pro". This isn't how it was before, so it's pretty scummy business practices to change it to be predatory like this, after all this time using it. Time to look for alternative apps.
I have been a user of the app for a very long time and I'm seeing the changes. I totally understand a company's survival relies on profit but just 3/4 entries a day is crazy. I have reached a point where I have started looking for alternatives and thought it would be a good feedback for Splitwise to go with showing ads and giving 10 entries a day or a 30-45 second ad for 4 additional entries. Giving y'all an A/B Test case here and hopefully y'all don't lose on a lot of customers.
On the free version, you can only add a very small number of expenses per day before being forced to pay for Pro or wait another 24 hours. This arbitrary limit made it very frustrating to use on a group trip with many expenses put on 1 card. I had hoped to put expenses down as they happened, but convenience is only available for Pro subscribers.
Loved it at first, and it'd be 5 stars if it was worth using but the costs are out of this world. I am generally not one of these "apps should be free forever" type characters but theyre asking too much for an app like this. I would be happy to pay as needed on trips to help break up costs with people I'm traveling with but that's my only use case. Not worth a full on $40/yr membership plus I guess paying for extra trip passes after your first free one which will go away soon as well.
