way too many ads. EVERY click opens up an ad with audio. I can't even get a feel of whether or not I want to upgrade to the paid version because the free version is too irritating to bother with. Any smart developer would give a trial period of the full version without ads, if even for only 24 hours, to allow the user to see the full potential. I'm quite willing to pay for an astronomy app but it won't be this one. After I finish this review I'm immediately uninstalling this app.
Reviews for Star Walk 2 Plus: Sky Map View
The app does not use my location. Wasted money buying the ad free version since it doesn't work correctly. The longitude and latitude are stuck where I was when I installed the app (which was not at home). I tried to contact support before rating, but they just tell me to manually set location. I don't want to manually set, the app should use the current location for optimal precision. This seems to be a pretty basic function on cell phone apps... disappointed.
Been using it since late July and overall very happy with the usability, interface, and level of information it provides. It's not extremely intuitive, so it took me a little bit to learn how to use it properly. There is a slight error if you will in trying to get a precise line of sight on a target, but other than that it works pretty well to help you locate objects. I find the notifications of what's coming up in the sky useful and informative. Night mode is cool and needed, but no horizon.
While a decent app with the packs, it really needs a better way of calibrating and keeping track of phone orientation. A calibrate button would, even if pointless, feel much more user friendly. I'm always worried if I'm not focused on the right spot and am constantly trying to recalibrate using the moon. But you also can't manually calibrate vertically, only horizontally. Despite all of this it isn't a terrible app, but it could certainly use some work to keep up with its competitors.
Thus is a great app for star gazers or anyone that wants to learn the constellations. I've read on similar apps that people have been having problems calibrating. All you have to do when your outside is wave the phone is a figure 8 motion and it calibrated very quickly. I love the fact that I can assign notifications when the ISS is going to be in view or even the Chinese space lab. Just search "ISS" in the search tab and it'll show you exactly where it is at all times. Truly awesome!
I can't say enough about SW 2, it's got a wicked cool feature that allows you point your phone in any direction and you can see the planets, the constellations and the stars. Hint: lie in bed with the lights off and use the app. With the music in tow, It's got the ability to float you right though your ceiling and out into the atmosphere..Enjoy!
The functionality of this app is great. The biggest area for improvement, which would make it a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ app IMO is if it included constellations other than the "classical" european ones. Nearly every culture has used constellations to track and understand time and the seasons, and for wayfinding. A lot of that information is readily available. What a treasure this app would be if it included and shared that knowledge. What a shame it chooses to only offer information about one culture out of many.
Great app for learning about our sky. I particularly like the notifications letting me know when and where to see thing like meteor showers, planets, etc. The ability to hold it out and have it actually show you what's in front of you is great. It tracks your orientation and location (when using the app) to give you an accurate picture of the sky. Likewise you can search for specific items and use the app to help locate them.
Great app for stargazing, beautiful and easy to use. For free, one gets the basics, which is fine for the once in awhile stargazer. I had no qualms in purchasing the complete edition of this app to get all the extras. I use it at least 3 times a week. The live view is great and very accurate (this, of course, depends upon the quality of the compass in your phone), and I love being able to jump back and forth in time to see where things were or will be. Best stargazing app out there!
Great app, very detailed and love the customization. Works great, however, I can' seem to calibrate the compass and it is always incorrect making it hard for me to use as I have to manually position it myself. I have 2 other astronomy apps that are accurate with my position, but don't have the detail as this obe, they also let me calibrate the phone in case the compass is off. Either way that is the only downfall, other than the "rate this app" pop up that comes up quite frequently.
