Reviews for Tandem: Language exchange

Great way to meet friends who share your passion to learn a new language. It's a fantastic way to get real practice speaking, writing , and reading in your desired language for free, while simultaneously helping someone else learn your native language. The UI is nice as well. *Update: after reading some other recent comments, I too do not receive new message notifications, this doesn't bother me as much because I prefer to not constantly have notifications on my phone. Also, I only had to wait 15 minutes to be "approved".

Fantastic. Feature rich and easy to use. I've only been using the all for a few days and I've already found over a dozen people that I regularly practice with. My only gripe is that a not-insignificant amount of people seem to use this as a dating platform. All accounts are vetted for approval (probably for this reason) and there are report features, but it's still a slightly noticeable issue. Barring this, this is an amazing way to meet people speaking a language that you're learning.

Tandem has helped me to make lots of friends in my target language (Japanese). It's such a blessing to be able to talk to people around the world and teach/learn languages at the same time. I also think they do a good job keeping scammers and malicious people off this app. Every once in a while I have small problems (phone calls dropping, etc), but overall I am very happy. Thank you to all the developers!! 🙇🏼‍♀️

It's overall a good app for people who want to learn and exchange languages and culyures. Very simple and I like it. The one and big issue I have is that they have been becoming more and more aggressive with their ads. It's like I have to see an ad to check out a profile or to open a chat. It's been making me want to use this app less and less, sadly. Hope they become more moderate with their ad fequency.

I like it so far, but there are some definite draw backs: 1.) It's not free, and it tires to trick you into buying a subscription when you first sign up by saying that it could "take up to 7 days" to match you with potential partners (which, of course, is nonsense as the algorithm does this instantly), but you can pay to "skip the waiting line." 2.) You can only add three languages for free. 3.) In app translations are limited to 5 a day, and you have to rewrite the text yourself.

For the first day, it's been swell. I recommend new users to be patient, it was a big mistake of mine to jump from one person to another thinking nobody was replying. Tandem is what you make out of it, and I think I'll be content with using its free version. I think the correction, translate, and transliterate features were all useful digital features that supersede face-to-face language exchange in some aspects.

The app is great in theory, but is unusable in practice. Notifications won't get delivered, so I never know if someone has sent me a message. Messages appear read even though I didn't read them, and behavior is generally erratic. Unusable until these bugs are fixed, and it's a pity. I bought a one year subscription but canceled it when I realized the app doesn't work properly.

My experience has been great up until I went to click on pro and it says I've already purchased pro, which I had, and that it will restore my pro benefits. When I click continue it does nothing and if I force close the app and reoped it its still stuck on that message leaving the app unusable. If I gotta pay again that's fine, but I can't even look at the black Friday deal for a lower price.

lovely, I signed up to expose myself to languages and sharpen my learning. application was fast, free, and I was talking to people soon. Platform seems beginners friendly, but I'm still new. Maybe I need to explore the app more for resources, but I'd love some more tools for new speakers. or just more translate/transliterate counts for free/new users.

I've been having a blast on this app! I've made friends pretty easily, and I chat with several on a daily/ every other day basis. I did get way too many messages at first, which made it hard to handle and figure out who was willing to use the app truly for language learning and not for flirting/short, meaningless conversation. However, after I googled forums and suggestions on how to alleviate this, (just by going offline) I've been able to manage my conversation partners much better. Great app!

I find that often I will miss messages because I don't get notifications for them. If there's a way to make the notifications more present I would appreciate that. There should be an option to reload messages from the list of ongoing messages in the app. Also, there has been a glitch where, when looking at someone's profile, pieces of paragraphs in their "About" section will be cut off. The country in their time zone is also often missing.

This application is incredibly useful for learning languages from native speakers. You have options to save phrases and you can always check them when you want. You can choose the target language (only one without in app purchase) and talk every day with up to 10 new people. You can take a certificate test to prove your fluency and get recommendations from the community. It also offers instant translations (a few per day). Furthermore all people I have met are very friendly and helpful.

It's a dating app. Few serious language learners. People simply don't know what they are doing. I've been using the app for 3 years, and have reached out to hundreds and HUNDREDS of people. 90% of people expect to be catered to. Allmost nobody knows how to schedule a language exchange call. It's a free for all that doesn't work well. It's just another messaging service where you can post your best profile photo, and that sucks your time.

I'm not sure what I expected from this app. Most users are very friendly and open to conversation. As an English speaking American, I mostly recieved messages from people who were trying to perfect their English. I had hoped to better refine my French, yet all my conversations are in English. Should I choose to, there are tutors available for about 20 dollars an hour, but it seems a waste. There are plenty of resources available online to teach new languages for much cheaper.

The basic concept for this app is great in theory, but I quickly learned it feels more like a dating app or socials app where physical appearance has far too much influence on personal traffic. It invites flirting and ulterior motives, esp with male approaching females. While that hasn't been my entire experience, it describes at least half of my experience. The rest of the time, the conversations pick up and drop off depending on the commitment and interest level of each party.

This app is great! I met a language exchange partner and we practice twice a month. We are both serious about learning language skills and we get along well. I recommend this for anyone who wants to learn a language. The only downside is that some people on the app are not serious about practicing. My first language partner stopped messaging me and ghosted me. If that happens to you don't be discouraged. Keep reaching out to people until you find a serious language exchange partner!

Honestly one of the best overall apps you could get. I love it. edit update*: since they changed things in the app in very disappointed. they raised the prices way way way up. it's ridiculous. 40$ now for using pro. and pro is the only way to translate messages or see profiles. before, it was literally only 5$ for the year. so now, Tandem is no good anymore. and that sucks, cause it was really one of my favorite apps for meeting real and nice people. they just shot themselves in the foot

NOT FREE. for even basic functionality, you need pro at $40/month. My filters were set to the absolute default, and it would not show a single person. Despite being allowed to set fluent languages without pro (you need pro to set target lang tho), the app would not let me. I closed the app, restarted my phone, etc. Still wouldn't work. I decided to check the travel function, and it showed me there were hundreds of learners near me, but in order to click on an area, you need pro.

Ok well that will make me study Spanish more! 1st day & started 3 conversations. 2 stalled (people have lives). The other took off and helped me to learn from translating what I didn't know, and immediately wanted to start studying verbs again. I definitely recommend this if you are here to learn. It's natural to want to communicate and meeting new people is always cool.

NOT FREE ANYMORE. The most basic and useful functions were available for free when I first join 3 years ago, I've since had to pay for every little ability on the app and has heavily decline my learning ability. DO NOT get this unless you're willing to spend more of your hard-earned money on an app that advertises as free.
