Description
I’ve been using textPlus for about 3 months now, mostly as a backup number for online selling and dating apps. It’s basically like having a second phone line without actually needing another phone – you just download the app and boom, you’ve got a real US phone number. Pretty handy if you don’t want to give out your main number to everyone.
The main thing here is texting, which is completely free over WiFi or data. You can send regular texts, pictures, and do group chats just like your normal phone. There’s also calling, but that’s not free – you’ll need to buy credits or watch ads for that. And yeah, you can pick your own area code, which is pretty cool if you’re trying to look local somewhere else.
Look, if you need a second phone number without the hassle of another phone plan, this is probably what you’re looking for. It’s not perfect – the app can be a bit glitchy sometimes, and those ads can get annoying. But for what it is – a free second phone line – it does the job pretty well. Been especially useful for my side gig stuff where I don’t want my personal number floating around.
Editor Opinion
So here's my honest take after using textPlus alongside other similar apps like Google Voice and TextNow. It's definitely not the fanciest option out there, but it's probably the easiest to just jump into. The free texting part works really well - I've had basically zero issues with messages not going through. But the calling feature? That's where things get a bit iffy. You're either watching ads or paying up, and the call quality can be hit or miss depending on your internet connection.
Not gonna lie, the interface feels a bit dated compared to some competitors, but it's straightforward enough that my mom could probably figure it out. And that's saying something!
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Super easy to get started - literally takes like 2 minutes
- Texting is completely free and actually works reliably
- Can use it on any device with internet connection
- Pick your own area code which is pretty neat
Cons
- Ads are everywhere unless you pay up
- Call quality isn't always great even with good internet
- App feels kinda old school and clunky sometimes
