Reviews for Threema. The Secure Messenger

← Back to Threema. The Secure Messenger

It is a very secure messaging app. If you want to be sure nobody ever gets access to your data, Threema is an excellent choice. The push notifications didn't work on my Galaxy A8 at first, but there's a troubleshooting page that explained how to fix it and they work now. Using multiple devices with one account is very difficult with Threema. That's probably the biggest drawback for me.

Dear Threema team, Please add an option to disable auto-play for voice messages in the Android app. It would be very helpful to have more control over audio playback. Thank you!

The app looks solid, but we're missing a couple of key functions, like reacting to messages in group chats and the ability to have a link/qr/whatever to invite other people in the chat (which can also lead them to the store to buy the app, you know) , overall nice experience, but not many people use the app because, cheap bastards and such and I would like it to be better so I can recommend it to more people. Thanks!

its always delayed on sending messages, and it always happen when its came to an urgency!

Waste Of Money. Only two of my contacts use Threema, so pretty pointless having it. Plus it was impossible to verify my phone number. Never received a code by text or phone. Seems I have just flushed £5+ down drain, as I am sure I won't get a refund?

Laggy. Messages often don't arrive unless I open the app. Considering this is paid for I expect it to at least be as good as free messenger apps. Functionality is underwhelming. Do something exciting and fix the delivery delays. Make it better please.

I thought I had finally found my secure communicator, but I am not able to make calls from it. Every time I call, I turn on the video call by touching the phone to my head. Why isn't the option to enable Video call at the bottom of the screen, but at the top???? I am not able to make a call in a public place because I keep switching to a video call with a speaker. If it wasn't for this big flaw, I'd give 5 stars

Damn right 👍, this is the best one out there I've been using it for a few weeks now and I gotta say I'm really not disappointed at all thanks to the team!!!

Great App, but I highly don't suggest getting it from either Google Play or apple store. because then you are still filtering your data through it, meaning your messages aren't safe. if you want to download the good version I suggest just getting it off of the [threema.ch] website. Otherwise, you might as well just use Facebook messenger to pretend you are sending private messages.

Been using Threema for many years. Since a few months, when I open a chat and start typing (using MS SwiftKey Keyboard v9.10.63.16) I often have the problem that the chat window suddenly closes and the typed text is deleted. So basically, Threema causes SwiftKey Keyboard to crash und exits back to the Threema-Homescreen. This happens every time Threema is initially launched, and then does not happen again. This does not happen in ANY other app I use. So it's not a SwiftKey problem! Pls fix.

when I changed to a new phone I had a lot of trouble with the backups it's way too complicated and inconvenient (people who don't have a PC or Laptop loose all their stuff cause you have to do the backup that way 👎) I keep having the problem that the app doesn't send my messages and doesn't notify me about it and the notifications aren't reliable either it's sad that an app you pay for has so many problems

recently I keep having a bug where when I try to call it is stuck on "Initializing". Have to keep uninstallinng/ close app and reopening just to have a call go to "Ringing".

Works great, it's affordable, and no phone number or email is required. One drawback is there's no multi-device support. It's been something like 5 years since they announced they were working on it but there's no viable solution yet. I would still like to see ephemeral messages. I understand the argument against it but I think the feature is a must for a messaging client that caters to privacy.

Threema is worth paying the money its the best encrypted secure msg app out there n I've used them all. Was an avid Session user till found Threema I even pay for it so my customers can use it to contact me now to stop using Session. If you are looking for reliability, quick response time and quality. Pay $10.99 its well worth it

I really like the private nature of this messaging service. For this, 5 stars. However, this is the second [4th time now] time that it crashes almost every time I reply to a message (often losing the message I am in the middle of writing), and have to start again. It would be nice if there was a way to send complaints about its failures, but there is no contact option evident for when there is a problem. Tech support gets 0 stars. UPDATE: NO TECH SUPPORT. NO ONE CARES ABOUT FAILURES !!!

App regularly closes a chat by itself after i started typing, and you cant highlight more than one entry inside a chat (to delete only selected part). 90% of the time i cant call ppl, but they can call me without issues, and it happened on 3 different phones with different OS, so i know its not related to phone/signal strength, while other apps work fine at the same locations, while they are free. says a lot...

My wife and I use this exclusively and have peace of mind. She's on iPhone too so it's nice to have all the read receipts and better quality videos that you can't send over text. The one downside that doesn't actually have to do with the app itself, but comes up when using it is that the audio on a phone call starts dropping out when losing service, where a regular phone call would still work just fine. Buy it and force all your family and friends to use it. It's awesome.

Can't recommend this enough. The only thing it's missing is self destructing messages, but that's not really as reliable as you might think. You should always be careful of the things you send no matter what and that you full trust the person on the other end. If you care about your security and still want group texts, then Theema is the absolute best messaging app for you. Not having to tie your phone number or email to your account is a huge plus for me, while for some people it's nice to be able to see all of your pre-existing contacts (which you can still totally do if you want) I prefer not to just have people be able to find me like that. I had some of my friends downloaded it (I even paid for some of them to get it, because it's that good) and walked them through skipping adding their phone number and email, had them add a master password (which you have to enter when you turn your phone on; optional) and PIN. You can set the PIN for individual chats. I have one group with 10 people who exchange books with each other. There are polls, now there's video chat to compliment the phone calls, you can transfer your account between phones, there's a web client, the servers are in Switzerland, end-to-end encryption by default, you can verify and add your contacts phones by scanning their QR code to avoid "man in the middle" attacks, and best of all you can just totally ditch your account; delete everything and start over whenever you want with a new anonymous ID. Seriously, I cannot stress it enough, if you genuinely care about security you need to buy this app and get your contacts to but it. Sure you can get Signal, which is tied to your phone number (not to mention gets part of its funding from the State Department and has a broken desktop app that stores everything in plain texts files) or WhatsApp (which is owned by Facebook and probably collects your data to sell you garbage) for free, but your paying for the real thing when you get Threema.

Desktop and Web clients does not allow you to edit a message after it was sent, while mobile app does. Why? The mobile app does not support voice typing! WHY? EVERY other messaging app supports voice typing! You cannot watch a video inside the app on a desktop! You need to download it to your hard drive first! Terrible! A paid app doesn't have what free ones have! The only reason to use this app is because it doesn't ask for your email and/or phone number, otherwise it's nothing special.

Consistently exceeds expectations! I have used Threema for years and, if they had stayed with the earliest versions of the app, I'd still purchase it! In addition to the encryption and security, they have continually added features that aren't seen elsewhere with the encryption and security Threema provides. If someone with whom I regularly communicate does not already have it, I purchase it for them. For everything Threema provides, especially at the price, it's ludicrous to not have it!
