Reviews for Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Absolutely the best email app on Google Play. I switched from Samsung Mail to K9, but didn't like it much. Soon after, Thunderbird by Mozilla came out. Since I use Firefox and trust Mozilla, I gave it a try. For those of you looking for push notifications to sync your emails faster, follow these steps: 1. Tap the hamburger menu in the upper left corner. 2. Tap 'Manage Folders' in the lower left corner. 3. Tap 'Inbox' in the upper left corner. 4. You can set up push notifications in each menu.

UI is nice & clean, push notifications work like it's supposed to, but polling doesn't work at all. No matter what interval I set for the app to go out & get mail it won't do it unless I manually refresh the app. This really needs to be fixed because I don't need the app to constantly be checking for mail, just every 30 minutes or so. Having push on all the time is eating away at battery life.

Having just converted my desktop to Thunderbird to replace the awful 'new outlook', I installed the T-bird mobile app on my Android. Using the QR was seamless and a really great feature and I like the interface and range of options. Sadly, that's where my praise ends because it won't sync or push emails. Even when I can see an email on my desktop there's nothing on my phone, no notification on the screen or app icon. Even manually refreshing the inbox several times doesn't work = disappointing.

Edit: if you have issues with outlook, view Developer's comment below to enable imap in outlook. I had to use a mobile desktop to get Imap to save when enabling Had to force close and re-open several times to get the unified inbox to work. Almost uninstalled cause I thought it wasn't available. Also, can't get my outlook email to work. Maybe d up having to switch because of that. Please keep up the good work would love to give 5 stars!

I've been using TBird on my desktop for over a decade, and love it. But if the Android version supports Folders I can't figure out how to do it. I specifically wanted to store the emails confirming travel plans in a Folder so they're easy to find and won't drop off the end of the mail list before my trip starts. Please, devs, either add the ability to create folders or to import folders from my existing desktop (and use them).

Overall the app works fine. If you are using it on multiple email accounts, the lack of a unified trash folder is a deal breaker. You have to expand each account and open the trash folder to see if there is anything in it. The option to show an indicator on folders with something in them would be good ..not just on unread inbox folders.

Really on board for this app! I've had so many issues with so many apps but I think I might finally be able to settle. Only one bit of feedback I'd really liked implemented—RTF or html signatures! I want my signature to be the same as it is on my desktop, where I've gone to the trouble of making a nice html signature but no matter how hard I try (including importing settings from TB desktop, pasting from existing formatted text) this app de-formats my signature to pure text with no formatting.

Like many others, I have been using Thunderbird on my desktop for many years. More than 20. I tried this Android version (I previously tried its K-9 precursor) and I am quite disappointed. There is one missing feature that is an absolute deal-breaker for me: You cannot expand and/or collapse folders. Every one of my folders is displayed in one very long list. I will keep using something else until they implement this.

Have edited my review regarding push notifications. There is a roundabout way of doing it. It's very unclear when installing the app. Your team needs a better way to set up the app for new users. Whole point of email is to receive email and know it's there. When installing the app... No notifications are even active. The complete opposite of what a user wants. You shouldn't have to dig through menus to setup notifications.

editing my review from 5 to 4 star solely for the reason that it doesn't sync all of my emails. It doesn't retrieve any of my daily subscription emails, yet I get them on other clients. It's also a bit slow on the retrieval too. Not sure what's happening here, because I really do like the customization. It just needs more work to be fully functioning

As someone who has been using desktop Thunderbird for roughly a decade, I was excited to try this out. But the janky push notification system is a deal breaker. I've set up both messages and folder push notifications and even disabled battery restrictions, but it seems to take too long for a push notification to appear (aka more than 5 minutes after the message comes into the mailbox). For reference, desktop Thunderbird and Spark for Android notify near instantaneously.

Update 6/8/25: I really wanted to like this but it's TRASH. Set refresh to every 15 minutes but it can go HOURS WITHOUT ANY NOTIFICATION! So far so good. Nice UI, simple and clean. It would be nice if we could get the emails as soon as they arrive in the inbox. I have it set to every 15 minutes but it doesn't seem very consistent. Update:3/19/25 When adding certain contacts to an email, they show up as +1. How do I fix this?

Recently switched from Gmail and I'm liking it so far! Sure, it doesn't have Google's special mail integration that seems to not require infrequent polling, but it works perfectly well for me. I like the option to have a unified inbox so I rarely ever have to switch accounts. I also really appreciate that Mozilla is always very communicative regarding feedback.

I love the Mac version, but I just found out I've been "sending" for six weeks with this app, the messages go in the Sent folder, and nothing is getting outside my domain! I can't access a log to see what is wrong. It's not my ISP; my sister's mail (iOS, but same domain) is working fine. I also find the help system confusing to use. I hate to go corporate, but I must be able to send mail. Just receiving isn't good enough.

The format of the account list should be changed to show account name, not just a meaningless symbol. Need to be able to open an attachment from the top of the email or a menu. Some emails have large amounts of space, and it takes a long time to repeatedly swipe down to get to the bottom where the attachment is shown. No way to quickly scroll down. Need to be able to add custom folders and be able to move emails between folders. Will not download PDF file to a folder; instead, it opens the app.

i thought i liked this email client at first, but not so much now. I've been intermittently getting error messages saying that the message failed to send when I'm trying to email attachments. they sit in the outbox, and then i open it, and it says message deleted, or sometimes it just removes the attachment after sending. since this is for work, i can't afford the time to troubleshoot why this keeps happening, so I'm moving on.

Fantastic! Moved over once I found K9 became Mozilla's. They didn't yet rename it at that point & then split it off. Its been fantastic the entire time. Does all I need & works great for me. Obviously, using gmail app directly for gmail offers things it does not, but am not concerned about any of those things. They're also still working on it. While I understand why some people rate it low, even though I don't have issues, its still improving. Some people need that.

Used to love this app but it now loads my old emails first. I have thousands of emails going back to 2012 that I leave in the inbox (don't ask!). Now there's literally no way for me to see new ones because I'm only loading 100 emails at a time so I can't see anything but 2012 emails, tried changing sort order, clearing cache, reinstalling & went through all settings. Help pages are mostly questions with no answers. I can't use it like this so I guess I very sadly have to find a new email client.

Android native back button doesn't exit the app. updating to 3 starts, pending update - developer responded promptly. Update for Devs: the back button seems to not work after going into junk, using it to back into the inbox, then trying to exit the app. it back out of junk, but not the app. Update Oct 2025: still has the problems reported over a month ago, and now more. Just found out that I can't even forward an email anymore.

I am incredibly upset that I keep getting a permanent notification about missing permissions to schedule alarms. If I don't want the app to do that, then I don't want to give it permission. Given the open-source nature of the program, it is very frustrating that this happens. The desktop version is wonderful on Linux, but fairly limited on mobile for some reason. At least don't bug users for permissions they do not want to give the app. It isn't a feature I use.
