The app is fine but the ads, wow. I downloaded the ad for one show and halfway through the first episode I look to see how much it would cost to get rid of the ads. They are that bad. Relentlessly barraged with three of the same ad,on repeat, every couple of minutes. I never finished the episode. I don't mind ads on a normal basis, I grew up in a generation where commercials were your break for bathroom and snacks but this was a whole new experience
Reviews for Viki: Asian Dramas & Movies
← Back to Viki: Asian Dramas & MoviesThe app has lots of availability, and good subtitles, but the ads are annoying, and you need to pay to see a lot of the shows. There is viki pass(pay for), and viki premium(also pay for) which is also annoying because they're separate things. Overall, though, it's pretty good. If you don't mind ads, 10/10 would recommend!
As of 9/25, if anyone is having issues logging in to their accounts via Roku or play store app (I couldn't and was about ready to cancel my service). I kept getting an error as soon as I opened the app. I couldn't do anything at all. I completely uninstalled the app and reinstalled and it "logged me out" so that I could log in again. Once I logged in again everything worked and my Roku TV linked as well.
I really love the fastforward and rewind function trigger, so much that I use it unconsciously on youtube now too lol. It would be awesome if there were more movies, but they have a better selection than some of the apps I've used. The ads aren't that bad and I like the set up of filtering/ searching. I did have some trouble with a few dramas being removed because of licencing but other than that I'm happy with it! (Edit: requested the title i wanted and it was added back super quickly!)
The search function sucks. Sometimes,it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Continue watching doesn't refresh when you watch on your TV and back to the phone. I have to search through Episodes to see where I left off. Starting the app over doesn't refresh it. I love the contents. Just the execution is off. There is no option to view details of show when you're using the android phone to continue watching. I have to find the movie on the watch list or search through the app to see details of the show.
Overall, great app. Haven't had issues until the last few days. It kept going "blank" and losing all my shows/ list. Wouldn't let me search, kept saying "whoops try again". Finally tried logging out and back in, and then it said I tried too many times? But I hadn't tried before, so there weren't any previous failed attempts. Odd, but the problem finally appears resolved after I requested a password reset and entered new one. Try that if you're having issues too.
I've installed this app on my phone. I can watch a show on my TV W/Chromecast or on my phone when at the beach. The subtitles are accurate and a good size. If you're a first time user with a standard upgrade and your casting to your TV, you should know that U can only run video on one device at a time. You download the app and find your video. Start the video playing & choose "cast to my TV". It will not cast unless you pause the video on your phone. Only runs on one device 😊
Viewing etc. works alright on phone (TV version no longer works, at least not my Sony). It would be great if the app and the web version were better aligned and synced (for example, my app Collection does not show on the web version, web Connections not available in app). PS post-reply: thanks but no thanks, no need for meaningless canned replies that have nothing to do with the review. Say nothing if you have nothing to say.
Very buggy, does not have a miniplayer option so I can't access other apps at the same time. Captions do not appear if the episode is interrupted (switching apps, turning phone off and on, even going to the next episode at times. This wouldn't be a problem if it was a free app, but since people are paying for subscription, this app should be improved.
used to love this app I have been a member since 2017 I'm really disappointed I have been able to stream from my Android phone to my T.V. flawlessly until the last 3 months the little streaming icon disappeared from the home menu on the top right corner. Now I have to try doing it per episode. Please put it back the way it was much easier for people to use. I have had the same TV for the last 3 years it's not my TV I have checked all the trouble shooting tricks and still nothing.
This used to be my favorite streaming app but I can't even use Chromecast anymore and when I go to watch something it says "Not compatibility with your device" when it was compatible a few weeks ago. I don't know what has changed, but it has taken a turn for the worst lately. I wanted to watch The Law Cafe today, but I guess that won't be happening.
Subtitles have recently been wonky, appearing mid-screen in very tiny font. please fix. Also, subtitles used to be customizable, why is that feature gone? Additionally, it'd be great if you could show access subtitles (maybe on the web version, if not the app) to skim read though and skip slow parts of dramas while being sure you're not missing anything important - kinda like the subtitling interface for subbers.
navigation doesn't work. you're reviewing the show 1 at a time, and when you go back to the main screen, it doesn't go back to the spot you were in. all other streaming apps take it back to the exact spot you were in. -5/18/25: still doesn't work after several communications back and forth. *it used to work fine like other streaming apps such as netflix, hulu, prime video.
I have been using Viki for about 5 years never had any problems till now. Im watching a show that I have been wanting to watch for a long time. Everything was going good till about episode 19. English subtitles were coming in and out, or it would freeze and sometimes not be on the screen. No one can figure out the issue and it's real frustrating. Especially when you pay yearly
the latest update for the app removed the casting button from the home screen. I can only choose to cast once I've started playing the media, which is frustrating. I hope there's a fix for it soon! ***edit*** constant drop from casting (when I do get it up) is infuriating actually. more than 3x in an episode. but overall, I love the access to the huge amount of content. I have the plus pass subscription and there's so much to choose from, and no ads.
This app used to be really good when you could install it on your TV. Since they moved it to Chromecast only, it has only gone downhill. Every single time I have to log in, I have to reset my password. Then, I have to restart the app a couple of times for it to finally open. All of the inconvenience makes me not open the app, which is a waste of money, time for me to cancel.
There is room for improvement (for the app) and that's why its not getting 5 stars. I love the subtitles in so many different languages, the artist snapshot and the reviews section. I love the variarity and shows, dramas and movies. a viki accounts is a must have if you are in asian shows, dramas, etc. I strongly recommend it. My -1 star is for the app only. When you want to continue watching at a later date or time, It doesn't always start at the very last episode you watched.
great content. well done to the translators! It's Rakuten though, so the app itself is rubbish. the Kobo app is also awful. I guess they figure people are there for the content, so it doesn't matter how bad the user experience is? it'd be nice to be able to leave reviews anonymously but even a feature as simple as changing your display name is beyond them, and so if i leave reviews my email is broadcast to the internet. thanks Rakuten.
Don't let all of the complaints fool you. I use the free version, which all that means is you have to watch a couple commercials for each episode, and half of them give you a "skip" button after a few seconds. The commercials are half as long as Tubi and Amazon Video, and the app works great with subtitles and remembering where you left off in each episode. They have plenty of free Japanese and Korean dramas, romantic comedies, etc. The free library is quite extensive and has some great shows.
The app does not acknowledge my account whatsoever. I have no problem logging in on a browser on my laptop, yet when I log in on the app, everything is gone like it's created a whole new account. It doesn't show any of my watched list or continue watching. The app saves nothing. It's useless for watching things on the go that I've been watching through previously.
